Gmail still works fine if you use connect to it as an Exchange server (m.google.com).

On my iPhone I have numerous gmail accounts (personal, several work/business Google apps accounts) all connecting as Exchange, and they have been fine. My wife connects via IMAP and has had the problems described; I switched her over to the Exchange method and it's all good.

LOL - Google mail works when you use Microsoft protocols from your Apple.

Oh, the irony!

I noticed, when I tried to get this iPod Touch to sync notes back to any other devices, there is no longer any way to do it.

iCloud: not supported on iOS4
iOS5: not supported on iPod Touch
Syncing over iTunes: not supported on OS X 10.8
Gmail note syncing: imap no longer works
Gmail email: also dead.

New mission: Migrate data off this $%^& device, whose hardware works perfectly, but whose software has rendered it useless junk in a couple years time. Smash with hammer. Send in bag back to Cupertino.

Gmail has been working just fine on my SGS III & my iPhone 4S.

After reading about this, I sent an email out to the fifty or so iPhone users in my building. So far I've received nearly all responses & none of us have a problem.

Perhaps this is confined to a very small group.

use the Google app

I have had this problem for a while with the native iOS Mail app. However the Google app reads the mail fine.

Battery Life?

I wonder if this is in any way related to the decreased battery life people have been reporting with Mountain Lion? A lot of the battery life issues initially in iOS 5 were related to mail (exchange specifically, I think), so I wonder if maybe the new mountain lion mail protocols are also shoddy. There are probably new hooks to allow Power Nap in compatible machines, so perhaps the computer is staying way too busy checking the mail servers and thus crushing battery life.

Just a though.

Gmail seems to work fine for me in Mail. Also, the Gmail iOS app icon is misleading for the article.

Had all kinds of issues with iCloud mail after the transition from MobileMe but no problems with Gmail.

If I don't have multiple devices to sync, can someone explain the big advantage of IMAP over POP3? In my single-client world it just seems like a big bandwidth suck.

Setup gmail account as exchange and sync notes

If Steve Jobs would have never let this happen, why didn't he allow PUSH for Gmail? Why do iPhone users have to set up an Exchange account to get emails pushed to their devices? :p And you guys blame Google...

This has been happening to me over the last week or two. It's on my iPhone 4s running the newest iOS, with the mail app. I have 2 gmail accounts active and it seems to only affect one of them. I also have a third junk gmail accnt that i occasionally check in safari. The best work around is to open the app dashboard and close mail.app. Then opening Mail causes it to correctly check and download email.

Hope that helps someone else.

This issue affected me a little bit, just because I rarely use the Gmail…(BTW I still sync it)

This error appears sometimes, not every time. I can confirm this is not my network problem because Yahoo is fine at the same time.

Just tried again before I texted this. Sync fine.

To Apple: iCloud is anaemic and Google needs a competitor - if anyone can do this it's you, not non-innovators like Yahoo or MS. Make iCloud have all the functionality of Google Apps but better, make it multi-platform.

Not to worry, their award winning support in India will have this resolved in no time. This is what you get for outsourcing US jobs Google Scum!

If you're using Gmail or any other Google product... You're doing it wrong.

Google is probably working pretty hard on this. After all, gmail users provide google with a lot of useful data.
