Did Apple actually state this somewhere verbatim?

Jony Ive has stated his dislike of skeuomorphism and Apple made plenty of jokes at its expense during the WWDC keynote. And, of course, Steve Forstall, previous head of iOS, is now gone. He, along with Jobs, were big proponents of it.

It's also very apparent if you watch the iOS 7 intro video.

Don't like them. My theory is the flat icons were added to iOS7 so the OS can run smoother. 3 dimensional icons take up more resources. Any of today's Macs don't need low-res icons to run better. That being said I do like the square look and wish Apple would replace the Dock icons with ones designed like the Dashboard icons. I never understood why they didn't.
(emphasis mine)

No they don't. Both the 3D and the 2D icons are rendered as 2D images, and require the same amount of resources from the system. If anything, the gimmicky parallax effect and the translucent keyboard use more resources than what came before.

No, not in those exact words, but the point was made pretty clear in the iOS 7 intro video and the WWDC keynote.

Okay, fair enough, I'll check out WWDC again and review the iOS7 video.

While I personally dislike the iOS 7 icons (not the OS itself) and love the OS X icons as they are, I think I could just about tolerate these... Just.

I think that OS X is pretty damn close to perfection as of Mavericks, although I welcome increment changes (as OS X has experienced so far). I just don't see why an iOS 7-style overhaul would be necessary for it.
