Probably not related but after moving to M2 Max MB Pro, Time Machine backup to my NAS fails when the screen is locked. Error message says something like TM can’t access some files. This backup worked fine on my 15” MB pro

Time Machine backups have nothing to do with iCloud. They would even work with the internet disabled.

Unfortunately, Apple forces anyone who wants to use the iPad as a productivity device into heavy reliance on iCloud. And it is not very good, at all: slow sync, no permanent sync, no control over which files are where. So many times that I need a file and am just cursing Apple for the slow sync. Never done that for dropbox. After 10 years of exclusive Apple reliance for me and my extended family -- we are talking 30-40 combined iPads, iPhones, and Macs -- I am now looking into switching to the Surface Pro. iCloud is just too much of a frustration and unlike Siri (which may be even worse) I'm forced to rely on it.

This isn't an issue I've seen on any of the 5 iPhones in my household. It's a pain for those who it affects though.

After recently pulling the HomeKit update it seems like Apple needs some new software engineers. Somebody is not pulling their weight. If jobs were around someone would have been fired and then the problems would get reduced, but with the touchy feely Cook, is seems quality really does not matter and the same old half-baked engineers are left to screw things up. I mean it does not change the Keynote now does it so it can't be on Cook's radar.

Apple once coveted for their software and attention to detail has fallen.

Still, notifications on my lock screen from wake, have squared off corners for a second before rounding off like they should have been from the start.

Siri is a steaming pile of 💩

HomeKit - OG homepods, you get to repeat yourself twice!

Keyboard click noise bug - you all know this one. Since the beginning of time!
He may have charisma on stage, but let’s face it software quality control has largely gone to pot under Craig Federighi.

I tried to activate advanced data protection yesterday and it failed. When I checked the recovery keyphrase was off, although I activated it some days ago and when entering the menu, it was shown as active. Desactivated it and activated it again (new keyphrase, of course) and then I could activate advanced data protection.

Wonder if they are pulled in too many directions these days. Between the myriad devices and functions/new function plus OS’s, update support, and bug fixing.

Well, independent teams work fine without being pulled into too many directions. My guess is that management is not letting people that know how to write software, write software. This has all the earmarks of micromanagement and/or lack of funding/staffing.

But it could also be that the good software engineers are just tired of Apple's management style and have left. No longer wanting to put up with it.

Those are a couple of items that bugged me and members of various teams I was on - bug hunts / HyperCare and being shifted from project to project midstream.

Be interesting if we had a body or three who knew how Apple manages this aspect.

They "work" is subjective. Ever tried to restore anything other than text files with Time Machine. Good luck with that. I lost a bunch of VM files and eventually moved off time machine. TM is made for simple minded folk that don't have to think very hard.

I did, just a week ago. A TurboTax document It worked fine. And others a while ago.
So the basic rule for backups: test and retest. (lesson from over 50 years of it/computer management)

Ok so I have the iphone 8 and yes I usually do the manual icloud backup BUT that option is GONE. I dont even have that option on my phone, it suddenly disappeared Sunday night. SO NOW ppl like myself can't even do the manual backup. Apple needs to fix this on ios 16.3.1 update.

For the last couple days I've been dealing with a bug with SMB in Ventura. Turns out, if you have a custom icon on any folders in external drives, that can block anyone on a network from accessing files on the Mac with the custom icon. It took me three days to find an entry in Apple's support pages pointing to a Reddit post. When I removed a custom icon I had on my 12TB external Thunderbolt 3 G-Drive, I was again able to access files over my home network. Talk about weird.
