As for software only volume control, puhleeze. I'd say I use a software control for the volume on my iPad about 99.9% of the time. I've had to remind myself that there is even a hardware volume control. And if one uses the switch to lock the iPad's orientation, one has to change that before the volume control even works. A nit by any standard.

Yes, you can transfer video and music to a Kindle Fire. It has about ~6gig of user installable content (i.e. your own music/videos), but anything purchased from Amazon is stored in their cloud network.

Note that while the B&N Nook has 16gig of memory on it, only ~1gig is available for user installable content (i.e. your own music/videos). The remaining space is for B&N purchased content.

I side loaded a .m4v of a movie I converted for my iPad. It didn't see the video until I renamed the extension to .mp4.
And it plays fine.

I have 2 books, 22 apps, couple of pdf's, one movie at 1.23gb, about 11 email accounts and I have 4.5gb left on the Fire.

But I do have lots of content I can stream from Amazon, Netflix and my NAS.

I would have loved them made it 16gb or even just added a SD slot. But the price likely would have been increased to 225 or 250. And to some that 199 price is a buy and anything over 199 would hesitate some consumers.

This is an issue on any manufacturer's tablet device, no matter what the starting amount of memory may be.

Sure, it may not come into play for a 'light' user for a while on said device, but it's still an issue. Even those who get the highest available memory on any device, most likely will have enormous video/music/app libraries and will have the same issue eventually, if not even right out of the box with the first use, as they 'want to have it all with them'.

I own a MBP and an iphone. The only reason I am looking for a tablet is so that I can browse the web when the MPB is hooked up to the TV. For $200 versus the price of an Ipad its not a hard choice. Some people do not need all the computing power of an ipad.

i think a lot the criticism is about the polish and not the power of the fire

Don't see the fuss....my iPad works well and does certain things for me....keynote, etc

And my KF does things well too...easier to slide out from under an air seat for a movie...quik check of email...etc

This is a good point, however if anyone else has a eco-system that can attempt to rival Apple's it would definitely have to be amazon. Heck the only other one I can think of is Microsoft's Marketplace.

These closed off systems are awful I think because it doesn't give the consumer the maximum amount of choices. You've either got to go with Apple or Amazon when it comes to these devices because neither company wants to open to the other, though Apple is more closed than Amazon is.

Not bad. I'm used to apps that take up 500mb to 1.5gb. As i recall, Google limits the size of apps? Don't know if Amazon is doing that as well for downloadable content? So looks like you could fit another 3 movies on there, or 6 if they're low SD quality, before you are out of device memory. And can you manually delete the installed movies/files or is wifi required to delete (in other words, does the device need to be in contact with the Amazon home portal for some reason?)

Yes...This is where it gets interesting....and not from an entirely argumentative POV 🙂 😱

Students can get Amazon Prime at a discount. Or, if you can qualify for the 'Amazon Mom' program, it's free (yes, FREE). We had it for almost 2 years this way, but our kids have outgrown the perpetual consumption products needed to purchase to stay in the program. We've been paid Prime members for about 6 months, but we consider it much like a Costco and/or SAMs club membership expense (but without sales tax for now, and the other benefits).

The KF will still function quite well without the Prime membership (but it obviously is a conduit to making one join the program). One loses the the 'rental' library, the access to streaming their library movies/tv programs (you just pay for them individually), and the 2 day shipping turn on orders. I probably left something out 😕 😉

But, much of that content can be replaced/offset (like on any other tablet device) with Netflix and/or Hulu Plus (which both have a larger library).

Just adding more information to the pot....not trying to stir it. 😀

When I plug the Fire to my Air, it's just a big usb drive. I side loaded a book as well, and that had no issues. Showed up on the kindle app fine.

That's what i thought, just wanted to be sure. That's one reason why i use AVPayerHD on my iPad. All my movies and tv shows I can load in any format onto my ipad, make folders for them and then delete whenever I want. So, good to know that the Fire can do the same.

Nah. We weren't discussing it as a requirement. Just that in order to take full advantage of either the Nook or the Fire, additional costs are incurred. i.e. you have to buy an sd card or you have to buy the Prime membership. Both can be used without these, of course. But that isn't what we were talking about.

Between this and an iPod touch it's really a no brainer. With the iPad it's a different story - Still, I think it's a really sweet tablet that will fit a great amount of people. I might buy one to use as a photography portfolio, having recently sold my iPad 2.

I'd rather have an iPod touch, its made by apple 😀
