What is up with this?

I noticed in console I keep getting these google chrome messages? But then I noticed my read write test speeds are much higher then what shows up in the AJA format? So I ran the test on AJA and this is what post in console.

First any ideas on my Chrome messages? 2nd what is up with the difference in console vs AJA?

My intel x25-m 120gb has listed read speed and write speed of 250/100MBs. How come the stock SSD from apple has double of my write speed? I was under the impression that intel SSD is superior to apple stock SSD.

Because Apple solders the SSD's directly on the main logic board, and yours is in a casing(most likely). I'd assume that's one of the causes.

Actually Apple does not solder the factory SSDs directly to the main logic board. The only thing different between standard SSDs and the one in the MacBook Air 3,1 SSD is the form factor and the removal of the exterior case that is not needed. Neither of those factors or being soldered directly to the logic board affect the speeds.

Nope.

1)C2D should always be enough for a second machine. Even if you got a better processor, you lose - HARD - on the graphics processor. More emphasis should be put on that.

2) 320m is vastly superior to Intel integrated graphics. SB update would be a STEP BACKWARDS in the graphics dept. No Ivy Bridge? NO CARE. Not even debatable.

3) Again, no ivy bridge, no care. Graphics > Processor. If this is a primary machine, shame on you for looking at it to begin with (mainly referring to the 11").

Wow, what is it like knowing everyone's computing needs? It must awesome!

I guess I'm off to sell my MBA 11'' because its a primary machine. Sure I only need to browse the web, run Word and iTunes, but hey, if you say its not good enough for my main machine, gosh darn it, I'm going to be selling it!

Oh and please ignore the fact that the SSD inside the machine has made it faster then my HDD based i5 MBP. Please do.

I wonder if they changed to Samsung because of the Japan earthquake?

Considering these have been in the wild since the beginning of February, no, it's not because of the Japan Earthquake at all.

This has been known for months and discussed in MacBook Air forum section.

Hence the link to the thread in the MacBook Air forum, dated February 6th, right there in the story summary.

Do people even read the story they criticize ?

Exactly. The difference in speed is purely the design/manufacturer....Dont ask me why, but the intel SSD are considerably slower than many competitors Crucial/Corsair. I think all this is going to change with the new gen of SSD (most all are offering 450MB/s + read times). I have heard (maybe its bogus), that what intel drives lack in speed, they make up for in reliability. Peace Friends!

Do the SSDs makes Safari snappier?

Yes. I can say from experience that Safari is indeed snappier (my mom has one). My iMac beats her laptop in almost every way from CPU speed to a discreet GPU, yet her computer feels many times faster. It's amazing. Well, my iMac also has mid-range DDR2... That's probably part of it.

I mean the new ones compared to the old ones. How snappy safari is is very important to me, and I might sell my current 2010 MBA if safari is snappy on this new SSD.

Oh. Nah, it isn't worth it IMO. You may get a slight performance increase, but she has the slightly slower drive, yet it's still the fastest computer i have ever used. I doubt anyone who buys MBAs would have any use for the slight performance bump. It isn't that large of an upgrade.

As others stated the MBA should be enough for some. Also I think you're assuming everyone is a gamer. If you're really worried about the speed of the GPU then you probably look at the MBP. Your 3 arguments are extremely narrow minded and sounds like they really only apply to you.

I agree 100%. The only thing I'd consider is would the already blazing boot times be improved at all by these new faster disks by maybe even the smallest fraction? I'd be interested to see some speed tests if anyone has done them yet.

Who cares?

The MBA wakes from sleep almost as quickly as an iPad and in sleep mode the battery probably lasts as long as it would when powered down. I think shutting it down only makes sense when installing something that requires a reboot.

It's almost certainly due to some advancement in tech made since the X25 was first designed -- most likely it's to do with the way that SSDs have to erase a whole 'page' of data before they can write even a single bit (meaning a write is quite expensive compared to a read, because it has to write the rest of the page back too). SSD tech is still advancing at quite a pace -- go read reviews of the latest generation devices that are just coming on stream (OCZ Vertex III etc) -- they run at 500MB/s, which is just astounding. The manufacturers are tweaking the designs to work around the various bottlenecks.

What I do know is this: it has nothing to do with removing the case :) It's an SSD, just in a different shape to make it fit better.

Not really. The MBA, like all Apple laptops, does wake up instantly from sleep. My 2008 Unibody did the same, no slower than a MBA. Apple has had this functionality in laptops for quite some time now. Yes, it is quite as fast as an iPad. The battery wouldn't last long in this mode. Put it to sleep and wake it up every hour to prevent deep sleep or disable deep sleep all together, and the stand-by time drops to hours instead of days.

However, the MBA in deep sleep, which is required to get the long stand-by time, does not wake up instantly at all. It takes a good 5 seconds to start responding to anything. That is much slower than an iPad, while it is still faster than waking up HDD based Mac Laptops from this mode.

Just got a new MacBook Air Monday, and for my SSD, it says:

Model: APPLE SSD TS128C

Guess I have "old, slower" one, in my "new, fastest" Air. The irony bomb hit the target. Honestly I can't really tell. As far as laptops go, this is ironically the fastest "feeling" laptop I've ever had. I use it for coding at work, connected to an external display, and I beat the guy next to me on his iMac when it comes to getting stuff done like opening up a remote share, getting a file, navigating, changing code, save it, back to Safari to test it.

Crazy new world, these SSD's allow.

Your computer is fine, the video means nothing, only if your going to play heavy graphics will it mean anything and if your playing on a 11" games like crysis 2 there is something wrong with people. I don't think anyone will be able to tell the difference on any of the smaller or air 11 and 13 inch unless they pull out some major FPS games.

I put my money on SSD any day before graphics on a laptop.

Depends on the controller. Intels have always had not-so-great write speeds for some reason. However, what really matters is the random read and write speeds. In random speeds, Intel crushes the Toshiba SSD in MBA
