They saw that Microsoft had become the most valuable company in the world, and wanted to emulate.

Not really but quite bad update QA this month.
First the broken 17.3 beta, now this?
Maybe take another.

What in the Microsoft......
Yup. Microsoft updater auto-updated Word to a version that wasn't compatible with my Mac OS (Mavericks) and there was no way to revert or download the old version. Had to recover a version from the Time Machine backup to finish my work.

I had this issue and the compatibility with my external bootable SSD broke!, it was a HUGE waste of time to downgrade!.
Apple has no moral nor interest in customers anymore.

Yes, and I heard that Apple Support Engineers regularly club baby seals.

Calm down; it’ll add years on your lifespan. It’s just a bug; an annoying one, but at the end of the day, it’s a bug.

At least Windows would ask you to update now or tomorrow.
I've had Windows update without asking, and I've had Android on my Pixel 6a update to Android 14, tell me that the storage was corrupt and my only solution was to wipe the storage and start fresh.

Companies need to pay more attention to what they're doing.

Over the past few weeks, some Mac users have complained that their computer automatically upgraded itself from macOS Ventura to the latest macOS Sonoma release, even with the automatic updates setting turned off.

I actually had this happen with Monterrey.

Got the little pop-up "Upgrade to Sonoma", and closed it by clicking on the "X". 30 minutes later, I got a message that the computer was about to reboot to complete the installation of Sonoma.

Rolling that back was irritating. (I did give Sonoma a chance, but it had some annoying little bugs I don't want to deal with)

Fortunately when this happened on a second computer, (from that initial popup) I knew to select "Learn more" or "Details" or whatever the text is). That brought up more info in a browser window, but it didn't attempt to downgrade the machine to Sonoma.

It is possible to downgrade a Mac to an older macOS version if you created a Time Machine backup for that version
This part is incorrect or misleading. Time Machine no longer backs up (or restores) macOS. You need to manually re-install macOS yourself first, and then restore your data from a Time Machine backup. Has been this way since Catalina or Big Sur.

This is very bad for businesses. We haven’t upgraded yet because a single application isn’t compatible yet. For 99% of the users I don’t think the Sanoma update causes problems, but for some it will. Hopefully Apple ads an easy way to revert to a previous macOS. It isn’t that hard.
Jamf hat on.

How are you stopping them after the 90 day deferral?

Microsoft tries to push updates like apple but there are so many different types of software and compatibility issues they have no choice not force the update . I’m use windows 10 and updated to to 11 but went back to 10 . updates on computers shouldn’t be treated like they do phones . There is more to go wrong. I was thinking about getting and Mac but might look into something different.

They had also previously broken the various MDM methods (like JAMF) that would block a user from updating to Sonoma on their own. This is especially frustrating when you specifically set up policies to restrict users from upgrading before IT has fully vetted a new macOS version.

This happened to me on a i7 MacMini back in December. It was a real hassle and I couldn't figure out what had caused it.

On off buttons on Macs and iPhones are gimmicky, I read this on reddit a few years ago and I didn't believe it and now this!

I have no idea why your comment recieved a downvote. Tried to look at it objectively but can't see anything terrible in what you said.
Response was measured, no hyperbole and even a suggestion for remedy.
I will say though, I think that the chances of Apple allowing a downgrade are pretty much zero. What they'll do instead is create another build of the same point release. Which doesn't fix the problem of course.

More or less the kind of behaviour I expect from malware. Not a great look for a company that swaggers around proclaiming itself to be the paragon of integrity. This is not a trivial matter and Apple needs to pass believable comment on it before the padlock is removed from my wallet.

Forced upgrades said it long time ago.

It could be unintentional but that raises more questions than it answers. The bigger concern in my mind is that this has occurred during a time when the UK government is on record puffing its chest out and wanting to be the gatekeepers of big tech software updates, while at the same time we can already see that Apple does absolutely everything it is told to when a state demands it.

oh this is bad and will screw over a lot of developers. Big time as Apple has removed rosetta support in xcode 15 so they are trapped on Xcode 14.3. Next catch is Xcode 14 does not run on the latest OS.
This just is going to make worse. I have to keep xcode 14 running for a little while for debug purposes or I need to build an earlier version of the code to debug. I personally plan on upgrade my work machine next month but it is common for me to want to hold onto a working copy of the previous Xcode for almost a year so I can drop down into it for an older build to check something.
