We don't want a second MS Office, but…

Just a thought on the new updates,

it's not that we want a second, more powerful MS Office-like Suite with iWork, after all, it is for the "rest of us", but please, at least keep the features that were in Pages 4.3 (and subsequently all the other iWork apps) and let us get the flexibility back.

I can't even change the toolbar anymore, I used to have all my important tools there, they're all gone into contextual menus, some don't exist anymore. It's much less efficient that way.
Also, I used to have multiple Inspectors up (with alt-clic), now it's really annoying, because although it's content sensitive, i.e. the right panel opens when clicking on a specified object, I'm constantly searching where I have to clic, it's really time consuming and totally inefficient. It kind of looks like MS Office, where you don't know where to clic either, because there are so many buttons.

Keynote is by far the worst update. Most of my documents have been destroyed. Animations replaced without warning, and best of all, because I wanted to be "connected", they're all on iCloud. Guess what, Time machine doesn't save iCloud documents, so they are permanently screwed. Thousands of hours of work trashed. There ARE reasons to be mad about these update, and I intend to write every day a feedback how stupid they consider their most trusted and long time customers.

I'm going to continue using the old apps, but first, I need to "export" back to iWork '09 some destroyed document and try as best as I can to fix the damages…
Just giving my 2 cents.

I'd like you to explain to me what a "Power User" would need to do on any Office Suite including Microsoft Office? I'm referring to "on the norm". I've worked in an enterprise environment for years before running my own office and outside of "complex spreadsheets", there was nothing about MS Office that a "Power User" would need it for. Most people don't even use all the functions in Word. It's bad enough it's very complicated for even a "Power User".

I would consider a Power user someone who does extensive video editing, encoding, music production, graphics design and for office stuff, creating highly detailed presentations using Keynote or PowerPoint. In that case iWork would be just fine for a "Power user".

I wouldn't consider someone making presentations a power user at all, a power user is not someone that uses an office suite on a regular basis, because they are doing things such as graphic design and video editing, not writing a letter to their Grandma.

App store stats

On the apple app store, Pages 5.0 is being rated reviewed:
65% one or two stars (776)
7% three stars (79)
28% four or five stars (314)

So, in general, 28% of people rating it think it is a good app, 6% think its just OK and 65% think its a bad app.

Also, the App Store has apparently rejected my comments... a bit too honest, I suppose....

App store update

Current App Store rankings for Pages 5.0:

4/5 stars 26.3% / 315
3 stars 6.7% / 81
1/2 stars 66.8% / 799

Way to go Apple! Woo hoo! the numbers are going up! Oh. Wait. Never mind....

Fully 2/3 of the votes rank Pages 5.0 a lousy application...

I'm confused if you were agreeing with me or replied to the wrong person. You said everything I just said. :)

Batch convert Pages to .doc or .docx

Anyone have an idea how to convert my 5000 Pages docs to a word format (.doc or .docx)? thanks.
PS, I'm being serious. I need to know if there is a way...

App store rating update

As of now:
4 or 5 stars 25% / 323
3 stars 6.7% / 86
1 or 2 stars 67% / 861

an amazing 52% are ONE STAR ratings

The trend continues to be toward "lousy app" (1 or 2 stars)

I still don't understand what the big deal about FCPX is. Yes, apple changed work flow……ALOT. But they have added lots of features since release and its very capable, even when compared to 7. And BTW the new logic is very "pro", its a huge leap forward. Apple is not abandoning its "pro" customers. Logic and the new Pro machine are proof of that. iWork is not "pro" software! So simplifying it, should be taking as such a surprise.

I am using Keynote and Pages in my profession, that makes Pages and Keynote Pro Apps for me. I would agree with you if Apple had two different software sets like "iWork family amateur" and "iWork Pro".

What ever you call it, iWork 09 has by far more features then iWork 13 - I rather call the new suite iWork IOS for Mac. Ok there are some neat features like iCloud collaboration etc but is not ok as a lot of the features is stripped away.

ps. I really like FCPX now, but I am sure I would not do that if the FCPX was a beefed up IOS app.

pss. Apple please give me back "Save As" instead of this "Duplicate" S****.

File size Pages 5 Versus Pages 4.3

Whats the deal here? Same document. In Pages 4.3, where it was originated, it was 155kb. After I opened it and saved it in Pages 5, it is 524kb. Wow. I guess storage is so cheap they can be sloppy about managing file sizes on Pages 5?

What happens when you choose 'lower file size'?

Nothing. It says that "This document's file size can not be reduced. All media files are at their optimum size." it was just a page of text. No graphics, no special formatting. just words.

Well crud, sorry about that. How about if you export it to '09 and just work on the older version using the older version of Pages? Still huge?

Sorry... RT

Well Microsoft don't even have a mobile version of their office suite out yet. The office on their Surface devices are still desktop versions.

They've been working on a mobile version with touch capable features for a while, and it's expected to be available for Windows 8.1 next year. I'm sure they already have an iOS version of it available, but they've been holding it back to give Windows a chance to gain traction.

APP store rating update 11-1-13

1-2 stars 68.8%
3 stars 6.4%
4-5 stars 24.6%

The number of 1-2 star ratings is increasing as a proportion of ratings over the last couple of days.

Eddie Cue, are you listening?

This is interesting. In Numbers 3 a four sheet spreadsheet with lots of formulas went down from 985KB to 705KB. Another dropped from 541KB to 359KB. Actually, the low sizes are current- I have been doing a lot of work in the new program so they should be larger than when first ported.

Could there be a glitch with your test?

I copied the text of your first paragraph above and then pasted it several times, filling a new single page document in Pages 4.3 resulting in a 179kb document.
I then opened the same document in Pages 5.0, saved and closed it, resulting in a 484kb document.
I then created the exact same document in a new single page Pages 5.0 document, resulting in a 493kb document.

STRANGER....

Created a new one-page Pages 4.3 document consisting of text and a photo covering about 1/3 of the page, resulting in a 4.7mb document.

I then created the same document in Pages 5, resulting in a 32.5mb document.

I then converted the 4.3 document to a 5.0 document, resulting in a 4.9mb document.

App store Pages 5 rating update

1-2 stars 68.9%
3 stars 6.4%
4-5 stars 24.59%

Now less than 1/4 of raters think it's a "good" app, as opposed to "average" or "Lousy". (My characterization of the star rankings.)

Ratings for the Older Versions of Pages

On the app store, you can hit the flippy triangle and discover what the rating is for all versions of Pages. By subtracting out the current version ratings, I find the following ratings for the previous versions:

1 - 2 stars 15%
3 stars 9%
4 - 5 stars 75%

Apple improved Pages by introducing 5.0 such that the ratings for the product have essentially completely reversed. Before it was rated as a very good product. Now it is rated as a very bad product. Nice going Apple! Thats makin' progress and keepin' the customers happy!

I guess I'm a power use, then.

Yup me too. I'm probably a "power" power user because I sorta like a left margin ruler, too.
