Re: hmm...

The only problem with adding a G4 into an imac is that if they start near the 1GHz barrier then there will not be much room for future upgrades (at least using the G4)

G4 will continue to be upgraded, there are plans for speeds up to 1.5GHz at the very least. The G3 will no longer be in production.

what is IT?

I have information from a reliable source that the big new apple invention will be.........

a SCOOTER that runs on hype (and OS X).

I tought the suprise was gonna be a new remotecontrol that can control my TV + computer ! ! That would be AMAZING!! That would really BLOW me away ! ;)

IF APPLE PULLED THAT OUT OF THEIR BUTT THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!
And more than that they were talking about 200ghz developed on a "unkown" platform but had to do with macintosh. G5 ANYONE?!
THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING ANNOUNCEMENT!

except that you have to remember all the other things that factor into the speed of the chip-especially bus speed. and by the way, it was motorola, and they were developing a 60-70 gig chip, and it was about 9 months ago

what's it going to be called?!

I would have to say "think beyond the square with a curved behind you live in". I would see it, as my guess, of course, that the CRT based iMac would remain an iMac but the design behind something as major as an LCD version and the aging iMac name would give them good oportunity to rename according to what the new design will be like. That iPad is a great example of changing name to fit design.

That and MONEY.... it shorely would not be in their best interest to release as they produced or they would not be milking the market. Also, with us heading towards the fastest processors able to be made very fast they need to make sure they keep releases at a rate so that something like Quantum computing can move into a stable phase and be ready for release after the smallest silicon processor is produced.

iCam ideas...

Maybe something like this (from Logitech)...

278775_f.gif

It's a web cam that can be removed from its base to be used as a digital still and/or video camera. I believe Intel used to make a similar product. I think Apple could be successful with a product like this if they included the following enhancements:

  • FireWire/Gigawire
  • AirPort/BlueTooth
  • 2 or 3 MP CCD
  • iConference software
  • iPhoto software
  • Ability to store images on an iPod
  • Apple design sense
  • Under $550

Any chance that greg godwin is undercover from Apple, here to throw off the scent of what is actually going to be announced?
If Apple want's my hard earned money for their already very overpriced products, they better give me the G5 or nothing, cause I won't buy it!
At the very least, the "new"G4 better top out at 1.5ghz/ 266mhz frontside bus/DDR Ram,because anything less is OBSELETE!!!
I use my computer exclusivly for audio production, and I can and will use every bit of mhz/bus speed that I can get my hands on.I am a pro user who needs high end pro products,so please don't even bother trying to sell me bells and whistles!!! eg.(ibullshit)

Jesus, did anyone else just cry out "WANKER"? You NEED all this extra speed because, being a sound producer you are SUCH a pro, incomparison to the other small time graphic designers and so forth that use Mac.... if you NEED every Mhz you can get, why would you not buy an upgrade? If you NEED Mhz, go get a WinTel box, if, on the other hand, you need real speed, you can wait until Apple is ready to release it.

When you have equipment that leads the market, how can you complain.

Hey genius, you sound like a Dodge Viper owner complaining that your V10 doesn't go up to 9,000 RPM like the S2000's engine does. MHz is like RPM, it just measure how many cycles per second you have, not how much work you get from each cycle. A better (but still imperfect) measure of real power is IPC*Hz (Instructions Per Cycle * Cycles Per Second). This is still misleading because one CISC instruction takes multiple RISC instructions to complete. The RISC optimizations and higher IPC make the RISC machine faster in the end. The other problem with IPC is that it assumes a full pipeline, so an even better measure would be to get an average IPC when running multiple apps and multiply that by the clock rate. It would give you a benchmark that you could compare to other machines with the same (maybe similar) architectures, but it would still not give you much as far as cross-architecture comparisons go. At least it's better than MHz, though.

Maybe if you bother to learn about HOW computers work you (and others like you) will stop filling these threads with so much ********.

Yeah, anything less than a 1.5GHz chip is OBSELETE - including the entire Apple product line and nearly ever PC being used today.

I do not work for Apple, I know people who do. Believe whatever you want. To be honest i'm not 100% sure what the big announcement is.

G5 is coming this year. New G4 will debut at 1 Ghz, will top at 1.5GHz this year hopefully. 266mhz bus is happening.

Eat your heart out, Bill

Here is why Steve Jobs moved his keynote and what he is going to announce. Too late, Bill. Too late!

DURING HIS KEYNOTE at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, Microsoft's Bill Gates will demonstrate the AirPanel 150, a flat-panel wireless monitor from Viewsonic that allows users to carry it from room to room.

LoL, i think that steve will *somehow* out-do bill... go steve - we don't want to hear anything about the CES, we want to hear about MWSF. make it huge!

Get ready for this.

Here is what I think will be revealed on January 7th.

1 Screens: 10 -17 - 19 - 22 - 24. Regular and Touch Sensitive. Firewire, USB, Gigawire and Airport bulit-in. SuperDrive.

2 iPod size modules will plug into these screens. CPU Modules will come with G4/G5 and dual processors, with 512 - 2 GB memory and 10 - 40 GB HD.

Much like Chinese cooking, you can mix and match.

I can also take only myCPU module (in my pocket) and use any screen to show and/or do my work. As example, between my home and my studio I can commute with only the CPU. Also by carrying a 10" screen and my CPU plugged in I have a complete solution in my pocket.

Over to you, Steve.

hehe........sure looks like I ruffled some feathers around here!
I didn't mean to rub anyones fur the wrong way, just saying what was on my mind......?
Feel free to assume that I'm an idiot......................?
Uh,yeah,you already did!!

The problem is that the CPU is not the bottle neck in computers now days. The RAM, Bus, DH are fare worse. We are getting closer to fixing the RAM with DDR but ... the DH is sill slow as hell in your average consumer desktop. Onece fibre chanle drives are cheep enuph for consumers to use.. then things will start speeding up a bit. Storrage is geeing cheeper and bigger but not a whole lot faster.
