I have an issue since updating to 12.01 where my reliable external hard drive (that still works on earlier versions) completely crashes my iMac.

I’ve literally never had an SD card fail on me in all the years I’ve used them. I get that they’re not the most robust storage system in the world but you make it sound like storing anything on them is a total gamble.

Same.

I've used SD cards for 15 years. Never a problem. Nor have I heard widespread complaints from others.

But the 2021 Macbook Pro has a problem reading SD cards and the story is suddenly "SD cards have always been trash"

I guess I never knew the dangers...

:p

Why apple added that ancient trash back into their MacBooks Ill never understand. What next, MacBook Pro with Zip drives? Apple always moved forward, until now, when they released a fancy 2013 MacBook Pro instead of a 2021 version.

Yes I would agree. My only explanation is they regard macOS as the legacy platform. It doesn't need to push forward anymore. It exists only as long as it needs to exist.

I have this problem with one of my SD-cards in my new MacBook Pro M1. It is a new SanDisk 64gb card. I have 5 other older cards that work.
The problem card works in an external USB-C reader connected to my new mac.
It works in my old MacBook Pro 2015 internal SD-card reader.

LOL, ignoring the fact that Apple is a member of the SD Association, what other widely available storage format can handle 128TB or 1GB/sec?

Apple's own usb SD card reader works fine. It's a problem with the MacBook.

Or it could be a decision not to support a number of SD cards anymore with the new MacBooks. Or the SD card itself not being compatible with whatever hardware they've put into the new MacBooks.

Your evidence only underscores the reason why it's dumb going back to supporting this broken technology in any form.

This sounds about right for SD cards. They are slow and prone to fail.
Ah! back on the "let's bash SD cards" crusade. Nice!

I've been using SD cards for 15 years and find them perfectly fast enough for their intended usage, and I've only ever had one fail (and I suspect it was a fake SanDisk microSD).

But I'll accept that "slow and prone to fail" is a relative judgement. They are slower than SSDs and CFExpress or CFast 2.0 - yes. They are probably more "prone to fail" than a modern SSD (and given the nature of the contacts and flexibility, they may wear out or be subject to damage more easily).

I also agree that they are not the "best" standard, but they are currently the "best value", and as such will be around for a long time.

I just want to know why I have to be logged in and screen not locked before a thumb drive will mount in Monterey. Maybe on some level related.

So wait... you're blaming this problem on the cards themselves?

Not these new Macbook Pros?

How do you explain when a card works fine in an external card reader... but not in their $2,000 Macbook Pro?

Is it still the card's fault?

:p

Of course. I’ve had issues with my 14” M1 MBP using various card readers with microSD card that worked fine in my 2018 with a reader. Generally the issue is the card disappears from Finder Or I get “Do not remove “ error messages as if it was pulled without us mounting.

Seconded. I've never had a SD card (or a CF card, for that matter) fail.

I’ve had a few using them as backup tha results in a lot of writes each day. If you read/write a lot the can fail; they really aren’t intended to be like a HD.

Because they’re still widely used in many industries and it’s a feature that professionals can benefit from having integrated? It seems like a pretty obvious reason to me.

Exactly. I find the useful for a real time backup.

Because SD cards are by far and away the most commonly used removable storage standard for cameras, phones, other A/V gear, and lots of embedded systems. USB memory sticks are probably more common, but much larger.

There is currently nothing that replaces the "ancient trash" that is anywhere near in availability and price. Yes, yes, CFExpress etc. are faster and "better" but still expensive and found ony in high-end cameras.

Apple is providing something for their market - not a tiny niche of pro photographers.

And yet other companies can make external card readers that "just work" with every card. Sigh, bring back those days for Apple.
They work fine until they don't. I have many external card readers that just stop working for some cards and of course they're not updatable. At least there's a chance that Apple can update their internal reader. This story will probably last about as long as it takes Apple to include a reader firmware update in the next MacOS update...3-4 weeks.
