Hi all,

Having this issue on the latest Mojave & Catalina on 2013 Mac Pro & 16" Macbook Pro.

I'm using 'Amphetamine' to keep the machines alive during transfers / NAS backups and this seems to be working for now.

I am tracking the Wake from Sleep Kernel Panic issue here.

Has anyone been able to confirm that downgrading to 10.15.1, 10.15.2 or 10.15.3 fixes the issue ?

Downgrading to 10.15.3 cleared the issue, Im able to keep my sleep and powernap settings on this way. **** Apple and their garbage coding.

I am appalled at Apple - 2 weeks after these issues cropped, not only isn't there a fix, Apple hasn't even acknowledged the issue. I've thus far been able to work around most of the major problems, but I need to be very careful when I'm copying data, especially from an external hard drive. It just took me about 10 tries, and two kernel panics, to copy an offloaded 20GB iMovie Library from an external hard drive back on to my internal SSD. I eventually got it copied, but I basically had to stop everything else I was doing to get it done.

FWIW, my late 2016 13" MBP (4 TB), which I run primarily closed-clamshell into TB3 dock / external monitor, is now waking properly from sleep as it did pre-10.15.4 after I tweaked energy saver settings. For Power Adapter, only checking "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" - everything else unchecked

This "solved" my regular crashes as well.

My 2019 16" MBP (I'm using it in clamshell mode connected to a USB-C/Thunderbolt 27" LG monitor) crashed almost EVERY SINGLE time when waking it from sleep. After changing the energy saver settings (see above) it didn't crash for 3 days now. Fingers crossed.

I am still not satisfied with how slowly Apple is addressing this issue, but it is a good workaround for now.

edit: day 4, still no crashes so far (approximately 20-30 "wake ups" per day)!
2nd edit: day 5, MBP running and waking perfectly – I think by now it's (at least for me) safe to say that by unchecking the boxes in Energy Saving settings we have a workaround that's good enough until Apple fixes this goddamn bug. ;)

I’ve been having similar problems, too, and the only help from Apple Support was to boot into safe made, and if I got a crash again to re-install the OS. I’m not about to do that right now, so I’ll try the power options suggested here. I hate that this is happening, and I really don’t want to send this thing back.

BTW, I’m on a 16” MBP with 10.15.4.

We thought the power option would fix it but I'm still having the issue. You can see here on my Apple thread what the status is. vrtx0 has been very helpful in working directly with Apple Support.

Thanks. I’ll look at that when I’m back at my computer.

I will say that I’ve been running off of battery power for the last few days, and I haven’t had a crash. We also updated my wife’s 2019 13” MBP, so I’m waiting to see if she has problems with crashes, too.

About 5 days ago, I finally updated from Mojave to Cat.(wouldn't have if I had read your posts). While trying to figure out how to boot up disk on my ext 3gb HD (not ssd), I started getting panic attacks. I was also using Superduper to do clone to HD. ,, So, after seeing posts of Panics,, I tried a couple of things from Mcrumors posts, and a few others. Went to settings, Energy Saver to check things out.. I didn't have Power Nap enabled to begin with, so one of recommendations was to disable it,, think I changed turn monitor off to 15 minutes (might have been an hour before). Don't ask me why I put it to 15 min not Never, that might have been more logical seeing as Secondary monitors seem to be one of the causes of Panics. Also, I do have an Glyph Thunderbolt dock, where I have secondary monitor attached to, as well had one ssd and one normal HD where I was doing my Superduper transfer of files for Clone..
I ended up unmounting my TB dock, and overnight left it. I expected, that after iMac being unattended overnighthat for sure I would find my iMac restarted as a result of PA, but No,, it had not suffered overnight. I replugged my TB dock, with ext monitor.and t, and both iMac screen and Secondary, (and even LG tv) which I have hooked up as a 3rd Monitor. woke up nicely (with less than ¼ sec wake up black screen).
Since then, I have completed doing Superduper clone to T5 samsung (had to proper setting for GUID for disk to get recognized). I have not had One panic attack (where is that wood I can knock on). If you have questions for me, let me know,, I can send you screenshots of settings if you like.
I had seen recommendation to go to Overwrite current Catalina using disk Utility,,which worked for someone else,, but never actually got to try it out. I would have been scared that it wouldn't overwrite, and done a clean install. Wasn't ready for that. I have 2019 iMac top specs. with 2 tb Apple SSD. Seems like a lot of you are talking about MBP etc though.

I’m in the process of re-installing Catalina like they asked me to do, and that’s a pain in the butt. I love this new 16” MBP, but I don’t like these panics.

One thing I will note, though, is that since this started happening, I rarely let it sleep while plugged in to power. I don’t know if that’s making a difference, but it’s what I’ve noticed.

Same problems here, crashes after going to sleep and has to restart from scratch.

Are some of you old enough to remember Windows NT, and maybe also Windows XP before Service Pack 1?

-> This is worse!!!

I just had another one, but I don't know how to tell if it's related to the original ones that I was having. Anyone else?

1 crash since upgrading to 10.15.5 (Mar Pro 2019), no crash yet since installing the supplementary update they shipped.

Many TB3 arrays disconnection, pretty much each time the machines goes to sleep it disconnects my TB3 Promise array and back up.

I tried to change some low level security settings, no change.

I am getting extremely tired by the low quality of OSX releases. I have a lot fewer issues with my Win10 work machine.

Cheers,
Bernard

hi! Thanks for this bro. Sadly, my story is not as good as yours. MBP 13” 2017 has been crashing since I updgraded to 10.15.4. I updated to 10.15.4 supplemental, and still the problem persisted. I waited for the 10.15.5 hoping that it comes wd the ultimate fix, it didnt. I was too happy to learn apple came up with a supplemental update later thinking that it ends my three-month woes. I was wrong. It still keeps crashing.

and what i hated most in this bug is that every time the mac crashes, it cannot boot. A folder with question mark flashes if u boot. I power it offc turn it on, and the folder flashes again. I had to repeat that several times until it boots finally.

Sigh!

Do you experience some trouble booting after crashes? I mean the flashing folder with question mark.

I had this "fixed" 10.15.4 with basically turning everything related to sleep off. Now 10.15.5 make it crash all the time again. And I have the exact same settings that worked in 10.15.4. 16" MBP here. What a mess.

Recently upgraded to Catalina on my rMBP2018 (10.15.5 (19F101))
Just got a black-screen crash (no external monitor, no USB).

So far Catalina has hard crashed twice in < 1month.
Not impressed, Apple.

Its this stuff that makes me wish they would go back to the 1.5+ year OS cycle. I know they are stuck because they like to do them all at once - but the pressure to put features into each build causes issues. Imagine 1.5-2 years of rock solid Mojave development and fixes, then come out with Catalina, and have time to perfect it.
I think it's because most of the development is on iCloud -> services money and unifying their iPadOS to sell ARM devices to "creatives".
I don't use iCloud and do engineering work - so apart from a nicer UX that macOS used to provide, the next iteration will not longer be for me.

Under Tim Cook, Apple has taken the "personal" out of "personal computer".
