What good comes from asking him/her why they are selling it?

Sometimes the story you get let's you know of alarms. Long drawn out or way out of the ordinary has me running.
But a poor thief will have a poor tale to tell.A good thief will tell you exactly what you want to know.

LOLSo you will count on running into a poor thief? LOL!
You need to stay away from CL
A good thief will tell you exactly what you want to know.
lol it's only one of the many questions I ask before I know whether I would be wasting my time meeting up at a public location or not. You just asked why would one ask that question and my answer was why I do. You'd be surprised how many dumb answers you get. I was buying a phone years ago and figured I'd try CL, one guy was selling it because he dropped it too many times. Amazing how many "won it in a contest" or have so many generous uncles that buy it for them.
I have been lucky so far and meet people in public places. I mostly sell and both of us walk away happy. No doubt you need to "cull out" the tire kickers, you usually know when someone is serious.
Last three sales on eBay were non-payers and one even wated to make payments if I would send him the item.
No more eBay for me.
eBay is so hit and miss. I've had great experiences, and I've had those non payers that hike up the bids and then don't pay. The biggest turnoff these days are the fees are so high in EBay.
Craigslist isn't perfect either though. I've had my share of no shows and tons of phishing emails for every item I try to sell. Came in handy though when I shut my pool down this summer and sold the cover, solar cover, and equipment.

I bought an Xbox One BRAND NEW for $250 last year or so on craigslist, when it was still selling at $400, it was 100% legit, sometimes it's best not to worry where they got it from
"Not worrying where they got it from" and "100% legit" are pretty much antithetical concepts. Just because you didn't get robbed, or end up with a fake/paperweight/blacklisted/locked unit doesn't mean it wasn't stolen.
FYI a girl in my city traded a hoverboard for two "sealed" iPhones via Craigslist. She then proceeded to re-list them for sale. When the buyer opened the phones in front of her they discovered that the boxes were filled with Play-Doh.

"A girl in your city." Then that "Girl" got burned because she wasn't smart enough to open the product to make sure the iPhones actually existed to begin with. It's not very difficult to reseal an iPhone box.
If it means she loses some money if you open the product she intended to resell as new, then so be it, because now she has two empty iPhone boxes with "Play Doh."
And @kngelv , didn't you post another thread where you stated a "Friend" was frauded by an AT&T carrier? Interesting you have these individuals you know who have been subjected to fraud.
Here is the link.

As I said in that thread this site has more tools than pretty much every other message board out there.
