Wait. Spotify won’t work on HomePod? Why would anyone buy one of these overpriced Apple Music devices again?

What kind of silly statement is that. I have been listening to my spotify playlists all afternoon on a new "overpriced" Home Pod. Honestly, where do these people come from!! 1990 I guess......

If the products were successful, Sonos wouldn't have had all those layoffs and had the longtime CEO leave. Sonos is on very shaky ground.

I’m heavily vested in the Sonos ecosystem and I really enjoy their products. However, they’ve been sitting by the wayside while everyone else is getting into the voice control game. Sonos should have partnered with Apple and Amazon years ago to bring voice control to their products. Sonos is cocky though. And as a user of their products, I find it unfortunate and disconcerning that they’re so cocky when playing from such a position of weakness. You can be clever all you want, but eventually time will pass you by if you don’t step up.

Sonos makes more than one speaker so it’s not like Apple can put them out of business with the HomePod.

True. And I don’t belive that Sonos is “in danger” because of this. However, I’m not sure it’s a good idea to poke the bear. How would no Siri, and no Apple Music on Sonos sound? Not too good.

And that's what us consumers desire: LESS competition?

You do realize that killing off all competition never ends well for us consumers, right?

As consumers we most definitely want as many competitors as possible. It gives us more options, pushes innovation forward, and prices down.

I was simply saying that it's stupid for Sonos to poke the bull. There's no real benefit here. Would be far better to invest that energy in themselves than this nonsense.

Apple is a phone company (and sometimes computer company) who has finally launched a “smart speaker” 3 years and 200 dollars to late.

They also own Beats and are the people behind iTunes. The sound quality on the current crop of MBP laptops are stunning for being in such an acoustically awful package. They're no joke in audio.

Sonos is an audio company with a history of successful products and updates over the years Apple is a phone company

Oh yeah. Just like Apple was just a computer company when they introduced iPhone on 2007 while Nokia and BB where mobile phone makers with a great history of successful products. People have such a short memory!

Did you happen to see this article? Apple has 36 million paying Apple Music subscribers and is predicted to overtake Spotify in total subscribers this summer.

I don’t subscribe to Apple Music, but I don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. It seems a lot of the Spotify users are living in a hole and are assuming that no one listens / subscribes to Apple Music.

36 million subscribers and soon to be the largest streaming music service is the answer to your question.

That article doesn't say quite what you think it does.

Yeah, but your sound quality is degraded when converting from Spotify to Apple lossless.

Why even bother buying the HomePod?

I didn't read it as a poke at all. It seemed pretty friendly, maybe even a wink.

Apple and Sonos are ALREADY pretty friendly with Apple stocking Sonos products in their store. A fair number of their products are also available for pickup today at my local Apple store.

Ha! That’s awesome. Good competition and commoradre (not sure if I spelled that right...)
“Camaraderie” is one of those words for which I start typing the first syllable out phonetically and then start thinking “Okay autocorrect, feel free to take over any time.” :D “Bureaucracy” is another one.

As far as Sonos goes, I’m worried it’s going to be another product that is probably the wiser choice for most people, but will get steamrolled by the Apple train anyway. Time will tell.

Illogically, I still think I’d rather have the Home Pod, despite its expense and current limitations. Apple did a good job making it look charming. It just looks like something I’d want to set on my shelf.

Got really excited for half a second – thought this was Spotify saying they were coming to HomePod soon.

I’m sure this will end perfectly fine for Sonos. They already have a solid stake in the marketplace. They’ve integrated Alexa, so their speakers are dramatically ‘smarter’ than Apple’s. They’re going to be just fine.

Good point, Nokia, Rim, had solid stakes in the Marketplace too, and its gone well for them.

Have you actually tried a Sonos One? The funny thing is everyone is down on Apple for not fully implementing Siri, but no one talks about how Sonos did not fully implement Alexa. If you had one you would know that. And thats if you can get Alexa to work at all on the Sonos One. I am big on Sonos, i have the playbar, the sub, four play ones, and two play 5's... but I returned the new Sonos One. Couldn't get alexa to work. Lots of people having problems getting it to work at all. And I run alexa already from the echo dot. So its not like I don't know alexa or sonos, just that sonos rushed the product to market and its well known alexa on sonos sucks. So yeah, on paper they are dramatically smarter, maybe, but in reality, sonos ones don't work as well as assistants. The sonos is a good speaker, sound wise, but intelligent wise its a pain in the butt. And sound wise there is no doubt the HomePod is superior (one on one, stereo does have its benefits..still trying to decide on that. Yes, I bought the HomePod, and yes, its working fine. Including Siri).

Not entirely correct--Apple is on pace to surpass Spotify in US subscribers. Worldwide, Spotify has nearly twice the number of total subscribers (70 million vs. 36 million, respectively).

I recall people commenting how Apple was really limiting themselves when the Apple Watch was released and the market was limited to a portion of iPhone users. Those potential customers dwarfs the number of existing Apple Music subscribers. I think Apple is severely limiting the potential sales of HomePods with this restriction, peculiar considering Apple's income is primarily from hardware sales.

There are 100,000,000 iPhone users in the US and a 36 million Apple Music subscribers (globally--a significant number of which are in the US). Many, like me, appreciate high-quality sound, and will primarily use the HomePod for music playback and a few smart-home functions, at least at this stage. Going to pick mine up now.

I tell you why?because it have awsome sound quality. Yes,it works best with Apple Music and that's fine. Spotify for me does not have any major advantage over Apple Music apart from that dark theme. I have Apple Music for 6 month as a part of a deal from EE and I will be keeping it. Overall,Home Pod is awsome for me.
But let me ask you a question. Why are you concerned on what products people buy? Why do you care? What is it with you people in this forum? I never seen so many haters in a forum that is meant to be mainly for fans.

Edit needed - it's predicted to be the largest service in the United States soon.

Not sure I'd count on that continuing. Apple has a history of removing such products once they start selling a competing product.

I'm not sure what you mean by "sound quality is degraded when converting from Spotify to Apple lossless." Maybe I'm just being slow today but I really don't know what that sentence means. I'm not attacking you, I just would appreciate that sentence written in other words so I can understand what you're saying. Or, someone else could jump in and interpret it for me.

I was responding to a direct attack. You buy what you want. I would consider HomePod if I didn't already have Sonos.

So, when you use AirPlay 1 to play Spotify on HomePod, you take a .ogg file, convert it to Apple lossless (hurts the quality) and then you compress it, send it to HomePod, which decompresses it. By then, the quality is not great. That's why people want Spotify support.

Far-and-away, the best way to play music on a device is the "fetch a link" method, where your phone, digital assistant, etc. says "hey speaker, go fetch this data from the internet and play it directly". That way, your audio experience isn't dependent on your phone AND you're doing the minimum compression. Chromecast does this natively, Firestick does, too. So does Apple TV. HomePod and Sonos does this as well.

There are some really cool things Sonos does alone. If I have 6 Sonos speakers spread across my house, if I can connect one Sonos to my router, it creates a dedicated wifi network (Sonosnet) which connects all 6 speakers directly to the router and each becomes a member of a wireless mesh network.

If I buy a 400 dollar smart speaker that can’t play the Billy Joel channel on pandora without a 1000 dollar phone, I just wasted 400 dollars.
