People loved their Sonos speaker systems. They were well regarded. People used to call Sonos "the Apple of speakers"

Unfortunately... Sonos upset a lot of people by depreciating older speakers... made a disastrous app update... got into headphones for some reason... and now they're releasing yet another streaming box into the market.

Best of luck to them.

Oh dear.... I had Sonos for a minute. The speakers SOUNDED great, but you couldn't connect them via anything but wi-fi, making them compatible with almost nothing and you had to plug the things in via ethernet to set them up. Why the absolute ****?. And don't even get me started on that TERRIBLE app. Yeah, I think I'll stick with my Apple TV. It's not an exciting product, but it just works.

Not spending $400 (or even $200) on something to replace the Apple TV 4K I have now. It does what I want, and if it breaks, I have another one I'm not currently using (just waiting to get that new TV set for the basement). And setting up 3rd party hardware/software combos is never as easy as the Mfr. would like you to think. Sonos should stick to speakers and stay out of trouble.

I would not recommend buying anything from this company. My Sonos system has become so buggy over the last few years. I've only recently been able to get my amp to work with Apple TV and AirPlay again. Too bad cause the sound is great, and I can't figure out another way to use hi-fi speakers with both AirPlay and a turntable.

Surprised it wasn't mentioned but it came out a few months ago this would be running the ventura STB software built by trade desk with the primary purpose of delivering targeted ads. I can't imagine why any consumer would want to buy a device that will surely report everything you watch including from other devices connected to the HDMI switch to deliver targeted ads across all your services/devices. As much as I like sonos, they have lost their way and this seems like the next step in the en********ation.

Soundbars always struck me as the ultimate scam. Buy a $1,800 TV. Now buy more stuff to make it sound decent. And they all have interoptbility issues. I now use two HomePods and it sounds great and has worked perfectly.

It will run Android? Very interesting. I know a lot of us have been waiting a long time for the successor to the Nvidia Shield.

It appears someone hasn't opened the AppleTV app lately. "Buy this, Rent this, Subscribe to this, etc" Slide down to "Library" expecting to find your own stuff... but no... it's limited to ONLY stuff previously purchased from Apple. You might have the TV app loaded up with ripped content, home movies, etc on a Mac but since there's no new money in that, why centralize it in this one main app? Rows & rows of content offerings that generally demand buying (or logging into paid) subscriptions, buying or renting video.

My household has just given up on using that app at all... but a push of the wrong button on the remote and it pops up anyway.
I will say that’s one thing on the aTV that sucks, not enough to be a huge problem, but it is annoying

Given that basically every new tv has a bunch of this built in already, I don't see the point. The Apple TV is nice because the interface is miles away better than our Smart TV's, and it's way faster too. Its price is already higher than competitors.

$200 for a streaming box is laughable.
You're talking about $200 like it's Aladdin's treasure. That's like, the cost of one night out, and it's not that much more than an Apple TV costs.

I bought a nice 4k Samsung TV two years ago. I was on the fence about Sonos vs a sound bar. Ended up going with the sound bar and I'm so glad I did, in light of the horrific app experience, not to mention that they could just kill the device with an "upgrade."

I like their idea of being a hub for other devices. Maybe Apple could steal that one?

you have been able to set the home button to go to home on the appletv for ages - you are choosing to live in your own push of the wrong button misery...

So let's see.. I can either buy an Apple TV for for around $129, with software that has remained stable, high quality, and unchanged for over a decade now...

OR I could spend $200 or more for something from Sonos, which JUST got done screwing everyone over with a crappy software update that they refused to roll back once everyone said how much they hated it?

Yah I think I'll stick with Apple TV for now.

I think if Nvidia had a hard time with their top-of-the-line box (Shield TV), then Sonos wouldn't do much better. I would bet they're betting on integration with Sonos speakers to set them apart. Wonder if they'll pay all the royalties for Dolby, DTS, TrueHD etc like Nvidia did... go after the "home movie" crowd.

TiVo stood a shot with a box like this, years ago. With their universal search and hands-down-best-ever interface, they could've done something really cool to unify the bazillion streaming services.

But they didn't. And the TiVo Stream 4K was way too little, way too late.

... now Sonos? Getthefugouttaherewiththat. I have ~20 Sonos devices all throughout the home, and if someone like THAT isn't interested, this thing is stillborn.

Damn shame about TiVo. Really - they could've owned it all ... been the frontend and saved us from this fragmented nightmare. What a shame.

PS - RIP TiVo Peanut remote. I'd give my left nut for an Apple TV compatible version of the peanut remote.

I plan to do the same. Because I found that ATV and firetv aren’t good enough

Unless your TV is disconnected from the internet, it's already sharing everything that you watch...

Wouldn't the TVs be the scam? Spending $1800 on a TV that comes with substandard sound?

Personally, I love my soundbar. I wish I didnt need it, but it does sound great.
