For my blind wife sonos is great only one app to deal with and able to search all sources in one go. She is so happy with the setup though my wallet not so much.

I sort of expect Sonos to be an Apple acquisition and this is the first phase.

Think about it - Google/Amazon have similar products, but with their Siri competitors embedded in it. Instead of starting from scratch, acquire a player with similar brand/customer appeal - then evolve it to compete with the others. Plus, can you imagine what a 'speakerOS' on Sonos could be like? More than just streaming music services... They could evolve AirPlay to behave more like the patented Sonos protocol that keeps the wifi speakers in perfect sync.

Sonos has stated that their goal is to move the next generation of product towards speech recognition - but why start from scratch?

To me it seems like a great fit.

Awful. Right now I'd be happier if Sonos bought Apple.

I'm happy with my Sonos, and I expect to get many years out of it. I don't want Apple coming along with inflated prices, lock-in, upselling schemes and crippleware updates to get us to buy it all over again every other year. And most of all, I don't want Airplay. It's crap.

If Apple want to meddle with something, how about they meddle with that shambles of a MacPro.

Separate app but the experience is not completely disconnected, Apple Music services are available to/through Sonos, and that's what Apple is trying to market with Sonos at the moment.

The problem with a separate Sonos app is dependency. I can't get all the functionality that Spotify has through the sonos app and when Spotify adds new functionality, it depends on when sonos adds it. If sonos had airplay, there would be no dependency. I know we can do the airport express thing but that's a janky workaround that is another dependency.

You're totally right and that might be the reason why Sonos may not be completely right for you. Sonos caters to the consumer on the simplest level, search/play music. But if you want something more than that, you might have to look elsewhere.

Too late, I love their products and own 5 sonos speakers including the bar. I do use the express workaround but hoping sonos sees the light.

Any owners out there of Sonos Play 1 or Play 5 can recommend them over Bose or Bowers & Wilkins?

Are they any better for playing rock or electronic music?

Well if youre thinking just a solo speaker i wouldn't necessary recommend sonos.

Sonos is for the home.

that's multiple set ups.

solo speaker go elsewhere

seems odd. it doesn't have airplay.. has a seperate app and ecosystem.. why would apple want to break their E2E experience chain?

My guess is Apple and Sonos are working toward adding support to Apple Music for direct casting to Sonos (like Spotify is gaining support for this). This will use Sonos' protocols rather than Airplay.

I get the sense the sale of Sonos products in Apple stores is a test case on whether they may look to buy Sonos at some point down the line. Yes, I know, they already own Beats, but Sonos is a much more premium product and they've been having financial issues as of late. My bet is that they see how things go for a year and then potentially scoop them up.

I hope not. A massive benefit of Sonos is its cross platform. I'm not a big fan of Amazon, but i'd rather Amazon buy Sonos instead of Apple.

You'll soon be able to cast to Sonos from the Spotify app, and presumably other apps will follow with Sonos casting support.

I agree, Sonos is great (albeit expensive), I had just expected Beats to fill this void in their product lineup.

'Tim read my lips'

'BUY THEM'......tomorrow.

I recon $250,000,000 and its apples great addition far far better than
silly Beats purchase, great fit for Hey Apple (yes Hey Siri will go soon) and control of music with AM

lol - if experience means crowds, lots of noise, inconvenience of driving and parking sure that's an "experience"

I love buying at the Apple Store, but primarily online. They have free shipping plus free returns on everything (correct me if I'm wrong but I have never had to pay for anything extra). No extra Prime membership. No additional costs. I've returned everything from Apple displays to cheap $10 cables at Apple and I've never once been charged return shipping. Can't beat that. In comparison, I've tried on several ocassion returning items for under $10 at Amazon only to see their return shipping costing almost that amount.

And from my experience, I find their customer service a noticeable step up from Amazon. No job outsourcing here. Everyone I've ever spoken to over the phone and through chat from Apple speak never sounds like a robot and always clearly understands what I'm saying.

Sure, Amazon or other retailers may have cheaper markups, but better customer service, and better policies are a part of that "experience" for me.

Anyway...to keep my post relevant to the topic, i think this is a great deal with the added gift card, but I refuse to buy into the Sonos ecosystem until they release a Playbar 2 with 1) an HDMI (ARC) port and 2) in white to match the Play1 and the new white sub. Once they get the Playbar up to speed, I'm in.

I think you may have seen the answer right there.

I personally would like to see Apple buy Sonos, and soon. Sonos has a very distinctive look and feel that instantly reminded me of Apple. The first Play:1 that I ever heard absolutely impressed me with its sound quality. They're exceptionally good at vocals, where a lot of techie speakers fall on their faces.

I ended up buying a complete home theater set - the bar, the sub, and a pair of Play:3 speakers. I was very discouraged by the sound from the Play:3, and also not happy that in order to separate them from the theater system to use as a stereo pair it took about five minutes of button jockeying through their app, and another ten minutes of jockeying plus a room EQ test to get them paired back with the Playbar. There is zero reason they couldn't just save two profiles for those speakers and switch to them depending on the use.

I ended up getting rid of the Play:3, and with Apple now selling the 1 and 5 at the local Apple Store, I'll be getting a pair of those tomorrow.

Control via the Spotify app is coming soon.

Yes, that silly Beats that now owns over 60% of the entire worldwide market for premium headphones (those over $100), and is now the largest producer of wireless headphones in the world, as the worldwide headphone market shifts to the majority of its revenue now coming from wireless and growing rapidly. Silly Beats. Plus of course the tremendous benefits that Apple got for Apple Music, which has grown from zero to number 2 already. Silly Beats/Ingenious Apple.

KOSS + Tidal (rebanded to Apple Music) = $50,000,000
Beats = $3,000,000,000
Saving = $2,950,000,000

KOSS always in fashion with years of experience in the headphone industry
Beats esp. large head phones worn when "out and about" out of fashion <Circa 2020
Whose silly now.

Deany, your fascination with Koss is interesting, and there's nothing wrong with their headphones, but it's laughable to compare them as a company to Beats. Apple is the largest producer of headphones in the world, dwarfing Koss, they didn't need some niche headphone company. When Apple bought Beats, Beats revenue was estimated to be approaching $1.5 billion dollars. Koss' total revenue this past fiscal year was $26 million. Koss reported spending zero dollars on Research and Development in 2015. Yes, you read that right, zero. Moreover, Beats was the largest seller of premium headphones in the world when Apple bought them. You may have also noticed that Apple is leading the industry into wireless, and Beats is the largest producer of wireless headphones in the world. Koss, not so much. :(

Of course, you also struggle to accept that while Apple was prescient in buying the largest wireless headphone manufacturer in the world just as the world switches to wireless headphones in a big way (Coincidence? I think not), Apple was also buying one of the world's most culturally relevant tech brands. You may not pay attention to the arena of sports and stars, but Lebron James, Russell Wilson, and other celebs aren't wearing Koss out in public. There's a reason Apple reached over ten million subscribers to Apple Music in just a few months when it took Spotify many years to accomplish the same.

Koss if purchased by apple in 2014 would have invested huge amounts in 2014 and 2015 on R&D etc

You can do a lot of R&D etc with $2,950,000,000 to spend.

Rebrand of Tidal or other similar company- straight forward and I read that it was the iTunes accounts 150,000,000M at 5% that were the figures used as an initial guaranteed subcriber base for AM. Apple didn't need Beats just the 3 months free to all iOS users and the built in music app.
Looks like we will have to agree to disagree.

Sonos updated their software recently, and it's now incredibly annoying. Clicking on a song now adds the entire list to your playlist. I spend more time editing my playlist than actually listening to music these days.

As long as I am not able to listen BBC iPlayer catch up radio this is completely useless for me.

A shame. Read many good things about Sonos.

Hi
You must be clicking on the "Play All" (triangle) which IMHO is a great addition.
Click on a track - just plays the track you click on not the whole album as above option.
Hope this helps
Cheers

There is a "work around" but you need iOS device to AirPlay, Play 5 or connect amp.
