Bluetooth is an open standard! There are Apple APIs for external devices, even spatial APIs. Apple is not as closed as you think it is closed!

This was in reference to what platform the set top box could run on.

But since you mention it, Bluetooth kind of sucks. Apple is wringing as much out of it as they can. And nobody is interested in interoperability. We still have Bluetooth because it’s a holdover from a time before everything got siloed.

I understand the headphones, there my comment is that competition is a good thing.

The settop box, esp at that price point and seemingly out a year - why? ATV is overpriced as is, I do actually have 2 but I did t want any of the cheapo ones, what’s the audience they’re targeting? I don’t understand their intentions …

I’ve never ever seen a single person wearing one here in the U.K. perhaps in London there would be but not where I live.
I see people wearing airpods Max where you’d expect.. on plane flights and at home. I don’t go out walking with mine either but use the AirPod pro

If Sonos makes their headphones’ design interesting, they’ll have a real competitive advantage over AirPods Max.
What advantage? Slightly lower price? They already said no other technical features besides Sonos connectivity.. and can someone explain a common situation I want to both be wearing headphones AND have external speakers playing the same thing? To share my music ? Great take off headphones lol 😂

+1

Sure, there's a smattering of people in public here in NYC but then again that's expected given the density. Overall, WAY more people with AirPods/AirPod Pros then Max.

Sounds like some great product introductions, especially the headphones.

The set top box will fail, 300%.

Maybe in the niche (or not so depending on your lifestyle) case you want to be able to critically hear your mix over the loud party noise of people conversing/drinking/general grabassery? 🤷‍♂️

EDIT: so no, not common but not completely ridiculous either.

if Sonos manages to do the following, then it may compel many APM users to jump ship (even though they have the Magic handoff feature that seamlessly allows to switch between different Apple devices):
  • lossless support through 3.5mm cable
  • power button
  • recommended but not needed - a battery charge indicator on the device itself
  • a sensible carrying case
  • noise cancellation that is on par with the APM

The killer feature for a pair of Sonos headphones (for anyone already in their ecosystem) would be a single button seamless handover between the headphones and a Sonos home audio system.
I think Qualcomm’s S7 sound platform solves this hand off feature and also offers hi-res audio. It’ll probably be used in high end headphones like Sonos.

Looks like Sonos trying anything to not go bankrupt. Sell $100 headphones for $400 to boost the bottom line.
Their problem is their equipment lasts forever. I still use their 1st gen stuff (but not as much any longer as there are more convenient ways to stream) and surely sales are nothing like they used to be. Not to mention their equipment is pricey and there are cheaper ways to get there.

I think the ability for AirPods to magically connect and switch between Apple devices would keep me from exploring these
I have a pair of Airpods and a pair of Sony XM4s and I know exactly what you mean… if the XM4 hadn’t been half the price of the Apple over ear headphones I’d have bought the Apple ones all day long for this feature alone…

Thinking about it, the only way — maybe — the STB succeeds is if it bundles several features of the Port and Amp together into a competitively priced (< $300) device. That *might* be tempting for new customers or customers already in the shallow end of the Sonos ecosystem. Maybe.... maybe.
