I wish I could change the unit in my car, but no after market solution exists (that I know of) for Dodge Journeys (possibly other recent Dodges too? not sure). With climate controls built into it, it really sucks

I have the xav-100 and it is superb. I'm very happy with it replacing a kenwood that was s l o w.

I just recently installed the XAV-AX100 in my '17 Camry, and I absolutely love it. It is far better than the Entune crape that Toyota installs from the factory.
Except you just lost the ability to program your car. I know with the Camry you program your lights etc through the radio screen.

I've thought about putting an aftermarket device in my 2010 Camry, but how much of a hassle would thst be since I don't have any Bluetooth at all to begin with?

What makes Etune crap?
Go back and read any Macrumors thread about CarPlay and Siri from the last few years. People complaining about limited number of apps available to use in CarPlay (and GooglePlay but that seldom is mentioned) and voice commands not working very well and they have to use Apple Maps and can't use Google or Waze or whatever... now imagine finding out that this system, this flawed unusable system, is 10,000 times better than Entune. You can't use anybody's map app. If you want navigation, you use Toyotas built in system, which is DVD based. Want/need an update for your maps? That'll be $400.00 dollars. And the number of apps you can use is up to what, six? seven? And the voice recognition is second to everyone. I use to amuse people trying to ask for 'nearest gas station' and have it tell me that it can't find that radio station. I'm not saying that CarPlay doesn't have problems, it does, at least the rental I had a few months ago still did, but it was nothing compared to the utter uselessness of Entune. I haven't noticed them promoting Entune for a few years on TV or radio ads, but a friend said it was still the only 'entertainment' system available on Toyota brand cars.

You need the top trim lines to even get nav from Toyota. Plus it's dated. My wife just connects her phone via USB and uses the Android Auto app through her S8. Apple should really create a CarPlay app for people with older cars. Get people used to having it and they'll want it on their next car.

The reason I asked why is I was considering the Camry XLE (Last choice amongst other cars I was looking at) and Etune seems to be not favored my many. Reading through this thread and others, the results are not very favorable with Entune for reasons you stated and @EdT made some valid points as well.

Ultimately, I upgraded to the new Ford Taurus SHO, which has Sync 3 and I couldn't be happier with my choice. (And the twin turbo power is exhilarating!)

Given the average price point for CarPlay decks is around $500+ im reminded of one of the reasons why I opted for a 7+.

My phone is literally mounted next to my car deck and user experience wise there is a very small list of what CarPlay is able to do over a stand alone iPhone.

Get a quality single din deck with Bluetooth or a USB input, direct audio connection + charging, turn on "hey Siri", obviously a non obtrusive car phone mount system and you arguably have a more functional and affordable set up.

Of course I'm coming from the perspective of having a car that doesn't have CarPlay already factory installed .

I have a very similar set up.

I agree the pioneer apps are mostly crap and it could just be the Pioneer OS(app play?) but apps are slow to launch.

My set up is basically:

  • Phone mount next to car deck screen
  • Connected through usb(hard connection for Audio, Bluetooth also connected for phone calls)
  • Navigation is usually running on my 7 plus
  • Whatever audio I have playing is displayed on my deck

Cons(compared):
  • 2 interfaces instead of 1
  • General user interface over all isn't as sleek as CarPlay
Pros:
  • Can run apps not supported by CarPlay
  • Always viewable media controls and phone/app controls
  • A few hundred dollars less than CarPlay
  • Almost all of the features of CarPlay without installing a CarPlay deck

You left out:. Specifically, this way you can use Google Maps and Waze, neither of which are on CarPlay, making the setup infinitely better.

Until CarPlay can run those apps, and my audio streaming apps, some of which are obscure, I have no interest.

For the posts asking about others' CarPlay experience, mine has been mediocre, and this is from someone who has used two aftermarket CarPlay head units.

It has gotten a lot better, bug-wise, but it is still very limited, and this will most likely will not change any time soon. I notice that Siri has gotten a lot better, but still very limited on CP vs on the iPhone. This has been the most annoying thing about it lately, at least for me.

Example, when using CP, if you ask what time Target Closes, it will say that it cannot do that.

One really nice recent addition to CP is Amazon Music. CP has a lot of compatible music apps and audio book apps, but that is it.

A piece of advice for anyone that is looking for an aftermarket CP unit, try to get one with a physical Siri Button. While some are compatible with steering wheel controls, the adapters don't always work with Siri, and if you do not have steering wheel controls, having a physical button for it makes using CP so much easier.

I personally prefer physical buttons for the basics such as volume/mute, skip, Siri. The all touch screen units suck imo.

Do you have the Journey with the Alpine package?

I just bought the XAV AX 100 through my work, but Im def returning it and getting this one.

I love the 100, its awesome. My car has that infamous popping sound but the CarPlay is awesome imo.

Yup.

Waze is pretty much the default app running whenever I hop into my car along with Apple Music or pandora and sometimes SoundCloud which I'm not sure CarPlay allows.

No, I have the basic Uconnect unit

I absolutely love my AX100. Having purchased mine fairly recently though I’m slightly salty as a disc drive would certainly come in handy at times.

same, just bought mine in June but I'm selling this one and buying the new one.

Yeah. I'm paying for Full Self Driving. Expecting $50K before incentives and taxes (base battery + premium upgrades + FSD + midnight silver paint + destination fee.)

Nice man, sounds like an awesome vehicle. Don't forget to add an LSD, then jailbreak the software to install a "drifting" profile for the autonomous driver :D

"Why is this guy's Tesla drifting around every corner?"

"Idk, but I like it!"
