PlayStation maker Sony today announced that it intends to begin producing mobile games designed for iPhone and Android devices through the acquisition of Savage Game Studios. Savage Game Studios founders have worked for companies that include Rovio, Zynga, and Wargaming, and Sony says they have "many years of experience making some of the most popular mobile games."

Sony says that its mobile gaming efforts will not take away from its work on console gaming, and will be "additive," providing new ways for people to engage with PlayStation content.
Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games. Savage Game Studios is joining a newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which will operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.
Savage Game Studios is joining a new PlayStation Studios Mobile Division that is set to operate separately of the console team. There's no word as of yet what the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division will work on first, but there's already a new "unannounced AAA mobile live service action game" in development.

Apple would never do this but if Apple were to one day buy all of Sony I wouldn’t be angry. Wouldn’t make sense it all areas and there would be some overlap. But imagine them having Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures, Sony Television and all of its IP. PlayStation with all of its game studios, IP, online userbase and cloud gaming network plus VR. Camera lens/imaging business. Bravia Television and soundbar business. Sell the music business. But man would the FCC and DOJ not be happy.

Will they ever even make a serious attempt to enter into the gaming market?

One of the things that came out of the Epic discovery phase is that in 2019 Apple made more money from gaming than Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Activision/Blizzard put together.

I'd call that a very serious attempt to enter the gaming market. It's just not the AAA gaming market, and the AAA market is the only thing some people see.

Sure, from a money perspective. That’s why every game made today is just a casino with different skins. Even the Apple Arcade games are designed like F2P trash (yes including the new Jetpack Joyride, I did play it) that are designed to keep you subscribed.

This is what Sony is now doing. They want that sweet IAP money.

More competition and variety is often welcome, but I won't get my hopes up. I do gotta say that amongst all of them, Apple Arcade is the one I'd probably go for (heck, I already have an 9th gen iPad, and already tried it via free trial). Sub for a year through Costco for $45. However, I may be piling on a few extra streaming services, so I'm holding off since I may not have the time.

Why would Sony do that? Mobile games not only tend to be pay-to-win garbage but awful quality as well. They need to stick to consoles
It's not like this is going to take away from their console game developers. In fact, they explicitly state that that won't happen. I'm assuming this studio will be making higher quality mobile-first / mobile-only games.

Sony transitioned from a TV/audio manufacturer to a gaming behemoth, Microsoft from PC OS to the same, and Apple, one of the world's most cash-rich businesses brings us...Jet Pack Joyride 🤩 Will they ever even make a serious attempt to enter into the gaming market?
Microsoft and Sony Game console business is not a cash rich business. The hardware is near loss leader and the games other than streaming has distribution costs that are not insignificant. It’s why after a decade Microsoft was finally breaking even. Apple game profits dwarfed the industry within just a few years of the App Store debut, because they focused on selling an enormous number of casual games instead of the niche AAA game market.

When they enter the AAA market it will be with AR/VR hardware that changes the market completely and justifies a price that makes a 30% + profit before development cost on day one.

The Mac has always be consider niche but demand a premium that makes it profitable.

Well, Apple didn’t focus on anything, really. Apple just said,”Hey, developers, here’s a thing”, developers tried a lot of stuff, figured out over time which things make the most money related to the effort to develop and they kept hitting that nail over and over. AAA is just not the most effective way to make money in the gaming market, apparently 👾 💰

Apple will never enter the AAA gaming market because they would never be able to convince anyone to pay such astronomically high prices for a computer that still gets absolutely trounced in games by PCs that cost half as much.

I don't play games or follow the gaming industry at all, but as a passive observer it seems like the gaming industry is undergoing quite a bit of consolidation recently? I feel like I hear about a new gaming M&A deal every few months now.

Pls give us some nice remasters for mobile.. 🙏🏻 Or at least make them full games... there's too many pay to win / gacha games on iOS and android right now. Mobile gaming lost it's way somewhere along the line... 😔 (I still remember when the original iPhone / iPod touch came out, how all games were pretty much fully realized. Whether bite sized short session games or longer ones, you payed once and enjoyed them forever (well, until the forced 64 bit upgrades came long, which saw many developers abandoning older titles...) and fully.. I miss those times...)
