For me, I just don't have the time for them. Or maybe I am just not willing to set aside the time for them for personal and family reasons.

If only there was a handheld gaming PC that allowed you to take your big games with you...

I have a OLED Switch that I bought last year, which is still collecting dust in the drawer. Downloaded a couple of games, and I dunno - the energy and the enthusiasm just doesn't seem to be there.

Bro you have a Switch! That thing is a home/portable hybrid you could take with you wherever you go with 4.5-9 hours of battery life! Take it out of the drawer, set up the dock, and get in the habit of packing it in your bag.

Conversely, there's this game called "slay the spire" which I bought in 2020, and have clocked 660 hours to date (could have sworn I played a lot more than that, but that's what the app says). And the more I think about it, the more I realise that what appeals to me more these days are accessibility and convenience.

"Slay the Spire"

Think about it. People have their smartphones on them at all times. That's where mobile games shine - as short bursts when people have small pockets of free time available. Console / PC gaming require you to set aside a few hours at a time, and they demand all of your attention, and you almost always have to be at home to game.

Gee if only there was a streaming service that Microsoft offered that allowed you to play console/PC games on your iPhone wherever and whenever.

Oh wait there is. Too bad Apple blocks it from distribution on iOS. Can't let Xbox Game Pass for Cloud overshadow Apple Arcade am I right?

I play "Slay the Spire" to kill time during boring zoom meetings. I play it when I am lounging on my sofa with YouTube running on my living room TV. I play it when I want to take a short break from work. The main features that allow me to play said game pretty much anywhere, anytime, simply don't work with console gaming. I don't need to devote 100% of my attention to it.

Again: You own a Switch. You have the ability to play console gaming wherever and whenever. But instead you put it in a drawer instead of having the dock set up somewhere so you can easily grab it and pack it when you go out and about.

And again: The Steam Deck exists so you have the option for even more demanding titles to take with you wherever you go.

If I have half an hour to kill, I will fire up Battleheart Legacy in my iPhone. It doesn't matter how engaging or immersive those PS5 titles are. If it's not available on my phone, it may as well not exist. Maybe it sounds sad, but that's life right now for me, and I wager there are plenty more like me.

Please don't make me post the Steam Deck for a third time.

I think Apple is not wrong to focus on mobile-friendly titles with Apple Arcade, since iPhones make up the largest number of Apple devices in circulation, and that's what lets them appeal to as wide a user base as possible.

Yeah, "remasters" of mobile games I played 10 years ago and smaller indie titles available on much better platforms, including the Nintendo Switch you threw into the drawer. What a great service worth paying for. Truly worth gatekeeping Xbox Game Pass and Nvidia GeForceNow from iOS.

You are right. There are, but the more I think about it, the more I think accessibility is only one part of the equation.

Mobile games are typically enjoyed in short bursts, which makes it easy to whip out your phone and play a quick game or two (or even three) whenever there is any downtime. My earlier example of "Slay the Spire" is how I sometimes pass my time during boring zoom meetings. Ipad in front of laptop, and I tap away at it while still listening to the meeting for key information (or for if / when my name gets called). It wouldn't be feasible for me to do the same with a Switch and a game like streets of rage 4 which would demand all my attention, and it would be painfully obvious to my colleagues that I was busy doing something else.

PS - I don't mean to imply it's all right for me to be distracted during meetings, just pointing out the more versatile nature of mobile devices and how they let people game in addition to their other functionality, and how it has made mobile gaming far more accessible than even handheld PC gaming devices. In a sense, it harkens back to the old smartphone vs digital camera debate. The latter takes better photos, but the former is more convenient to bring around and operate.

Second is portability. I already use my iPad for work, so it doesn't cost me anything to just load some games on it, since I already bring it to and from work anyways. Conversely, my switch represents another device that I have to pack into my bag. It's not really bulky or heavy, but it is one extra item which serves zero utility outside of gaming. My iPad at least holds my teaching notes, and I also use it for other tasks like checking email or watching YouTube videos.

I am not denigrating PC gaming (I have many fond memories of plugging away at Diablo, Baldurs Gate, red alert, Planescape Torment, even darksiders in my younger years). I don't know if its just me, or adulthood, or if I simply haven't found the right games, but PC / console gaming just doesn't seem to enthuse me anymore.

Maybe if the older Legacy of Kain series got remastered for the switch...

I'd say something but I don't really have the high horse to criticize your habits during work meetings. Plus this isn't really the forum for doing so.

Maybe if we had forums dot workrumors dot com, then I'd go ham.

You don't hear me complaining about taking my Steam Deck with me, and that thing is a lot bigger than a Nintendo Switch. No issues there, especially since Valve gives you a carrying case with each Deck so bringing it is even easier and convenient. I even have an AirTag attached to it.

All I hear is excuses lmao. Let's be real I know the real reason you don't take your Switch: You don't know what to play.

Legacy of Kain is on Steam and playable on the Steam Deck. Alternatively there's Steam Link in which you can stream your games to your phone or Mac.

Again, I just think you don't know what to play, which I can help with that.

It was more along the lines of, developers have to get money from a free game somehow. It also turns out that folks appear to like paying for cosmetics (I think it is dumb, personally).

The games that you have to pay for (like Assassins Creed) where they still have paid micro transactions are irritating.

SIE doing mobile games now "inhouse" is going to be a way for them to bolster revenue. I 100% do not expect them to port games like God of War as is to mobile form. I would expect to see them do something like the Hitman/Laura Croft "puzzle" game with Kratos, or maybe an endless runner. I also expect all the MTX from these mobile games.
gotcha , but note that "developers have to get money from somewhere for free games" could've been solved if they charged for the game and not use IAP , but IAP is making them more money , so they go that route , and that was my point , its not a mobile problem , they just started it because they couldn't get ppl to pay 2$ for a game , so they gave it for free and did IAP ,but now everyone can see it , which is why GTAO is a mega money maker for example.
But I think we are on the same page here , probably we are too old :) , my friends kids spend money on cosmetics all the time , hopefully my kids will spend nothing on that BS when they come of age.

Well what do you like? If you have no specific preferences I can start with the basic heavy hitters of late.

Can’t think of any at the moment. When I first got my switch, I went about purchasing some older games which I used to enjoy playing in the past (like darksiders), but for some reason just didn’t enjoy as much. So I may as well just use this as an opportunity to start fresh, if that makes sense.

If you want to get your older games a Steam Deck would be good for that.

But since the Steam Deck is on a reservation system that'll take a while so I'll just do Switch games since you'll need that Deck for the PlayStation blockbusters.

Well for starters, surely you've heard of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Game of the Year 2017 winner and the game that saved Nintendo after the disaster that was the Wii U, redefined what it means to be open world, gave the Switch the kickstart it needed, and is one of the best Nintendo games ever made. You are not restricted at all in BotW. You are free to go about it at your own pace no matter how fast or slow. The main goal is just "Defeat Ganon," but how you go about that is up to you. You can go straight to Hyrule Castle and fight the final boss immediately, or explore the world and grow yourself preparing for the fight, finding all the oddities and unique things around the world.

Next: Super Mario Maker 2. It is what it's named: A tool to make your own Mario levels, using assets and styles from Super Mario Bros 1, 3, World, New Soup U, and Super Mario 3D World. You can even make your own full Mario World maps and fill them with your levels, and share them online and download others levels. Additionally there's a full single player story mode full of custom levels Nintendo made to help give you inspiration.

Speaking of Super Mario 3D World, this is one of the best games from the Wii U and it's available on Switch. Can be played alone or with friends, and the Switch release comes with a brand new smaller game within it, Bowser's Fury, which takes 3D World and follows a more open ended Mario formula

Last Mario game: If you got a Switch, you need Mario Odyssey. It's the best 3D Mario to date. You have massive worlds to explore, and a new friend named Cappy that allows you to possess every Mario enemy and use their powers to explore the worlds more.

If you want something fresh, I got just the thing: next week is the release of Nintendo's popular multiplayer shooter Splatoon 3. You're a Squid (or Octopus) humanoid who shoots ink, and the goal is you and your team need to paint the floor more than your opponents. It isn't just multiplayer though as there's a full single player story mode, and the Splatoon 3 has a new card battler side mode as well. And the music...oh god the music is amazing.

(Please help me I played the Splatfest World Premiere last Saturday and now I got mad withdrawal. I need this game NOW)

But maybe you want short bursts of fun, well Wario has you covered with WarioWare Get it Together! A collection of Wario's newest Microgames to play on your Switch, alone or with a friend!

I hear you're a teacher, well the Switch has a game where you play teacher as well: Fire Emblem Three Houses. You are Byleth, a mercenary who is hired to be the teacher for one of three royal houses in the continent of Fodlan. What house you decide to teach, is up to you. All three houses are essentially their own games. You will raise your students, bond with them, learn their stories, and command them in battle. But be forwarned: If any of your students die, they're gone for good.

For someone who wants short bursts, look no further than the chilliest Nintendo game: Animal Crossing New Horizons. It's a comfy life sim, where you get your own private island to shape as your own with your fellow villagers. There's also an expansion for the game: Happy Home Paradise, as an option where instead of managing a private island you can just design homes and rooms for a resort island.

My last Nintendo game, is the big one. The ultimate crossover: Super Smash Bros Ultimate. A game that I am sure needs no introduction. What you may not know, is Smash Ultimate has a short bursts of fun single player adventure mode called World of Light.

And that's just Nintendo games. There's other third parties on Switch definitely worth your time that will give you the short bursts of fun you need. Monster Hunter Rise, Cuphead, The Wonderful 101, Hades, Enter the Gungeon, Persona 5 Royal, and more.

What do you guys think about this article from The Verge?

I thought it was an interesting article, that does have a good point.

See this is why I keep saying why mobile will never overtake traditional gaming. Nothing beats single player experiences, especially after the PS4 generation dropping masterpiece after masterpiece, and the PS5 keeping that energy up.
