Its 30% smaller in the area of its biggest side, but apparently it is 75% smaller in volume which is what really counts IMO. in the pictures it really does look MUCH smaller than a PS2. And it does have the network adapter built in, but not the HDD. It will certinaly tempt a few new users, but I'm not sure if anyone will upgrade from a PS2. I guess some people will, just to have the latest version but I won't.

Wireless controllers would be my #1 request for the PS3, apart from improved graphics which will happen anyway of course. #2 would be to make the games load more quickly. When playing Athens 2004, it takes forever to get from the end of one event to the start of the next. Surely they can do better than this?

that looks totally cool. but man, i just bought my PS2 when the price dropped not too long ago. i wonder if i can trade it in pretty easily (for a little bit of price difference) for the new one. it looks cool!!! i dont use the hard drive so that doesnt really matter. but i wonder if they will keep the old one around for the HD use.

wow a new ps2...

thats like saying a new pentium 2 gateway with windows 98. Whoopty freakin doo.
I'll stick with my xbox and non anime fanboy games. :D

This new mini PS2 doesn't even support the HDD.

Stupid if you ask me.

unless you know something we don't know they haven't stated that yet...

and what? stick to your jock/prick games? kidding kidding...

anyways I'm thinking of trading mine in for this new model depending on the HDD situation...we'll see.

saunders45 - touch a nerve did we!! stick to your (oversized) xbox! :D (just joking) yeah the hard drive option not being there would be a pain... or would it? i don't use it!!! But again they haven't stated anything about that yet as FistfulofAngst said. You can't argue that its cool, its tiny!! anyway you can't ask for much it only costs £99!!!!!! its a bargin whether thats windows 98 or not!

PS2 sells so well and is so popular because it has the best games available for it, game cube (which i also own), and then the xbox just don't have as many games and seem to sell well to limited age groups instead of the PS2 which is good for people of any age.

PS2 is the most popular console because it is backwards compatible with all those old PS1 games, as well as being able to play DVD's right out of the box. It has the most games, so it sells the most units, so developers put their games out on it to sell the most copies.
The PStwo will continue to sell well long after the PS3 and NeXbox are released, because the price willl drop to $99 or less.
Anyone know if PS3 and NeXbox are going to be backwards compatible?

As far as I've heard they will not be backwards compatibility but "emulate" their corresponding previous generation systems. the difference between backwards compatibility and emulation is something I have no idea about. I can't prove the validity of this as that's all hearsay.

It'd be cool if like the xbox it came with a 8mb HDD, that would satisfy my needs. the only reason I care is that supposedly MGS3 will have downloadable content and it'd be nice to not have to use a memory card.

No. no nerve touched. Just another great marketing ploy from sony. I guarantee many will trade in their old ps2 for the new mini 1. Just like tons of people did with their ps1's. I know this because I worked for a mom and pop video game store in Orlando for a few years. I just don't see why mac people get so excited at a ps2 yet shun an xbox because its Microsoft. The PS2 is the PC of consoles. Most people have one, lots of software, easy to hack, sony's customer service record sucks, and yet people still bow down before the almighty sony and its "Playstation". How many ps2's did i send in for repair, lost count. How many gamecube and xbox systems, about 10 from launch till august of last year.

i have an original playstation bought 1 year after release and its still going strong! you can't seriously tell me that sony are well known for bad build quality? Sony have a reasonably good rep for building stuff, but i don't know about playstations, i just know that i've never met someone with a broken playstation but i have also never met anyone with a broken xbox. You are obviously in a better position to say because you worked in a computer game shop, and i also have no experience of sony's after sale support because nothing i have bought has ever gone wrong. I'm one of the lucky ones i guess! The playstation isn't the pc of consoles? it doesn't crash every 5 minutes unlike some windows machines!!!

You could say that the more they sell the more that are gonna get broken.

anyway! the new ps2 will sell, it looks cool and that alone will shift a few units alone. Snake Eater, that will shift a few more as will San Andreas. Are they releasing snake eater on the xbox? someone mentioned it a few posts ago but i hadn't heard of it?

the biggest problem with ps2's is the eye going bad. The eye on the dvd rom is too close to the power supply and i have had to return way too many of them for the eye burning up. I would not be suprised at seeing snake eater on xbox one bit. MGS2 substance sold very well. But i just hope MGS3 is better that 2 becuase i thought 2 wasn't that great. Took a rabbit trail from the others and got way too "out there" for me. Oh well, I've got splinter cell, so that works for me.

yeah, like MGS2 I'm sure it will make it's way to the xbox as well. I can see it now: "Metal Gear Solid 3: Carnivore". I'd have to agree, GTA: SA and Snake Eater are going to move a pile of these units.

and I hate Raiden, he's the bane of the MGS universe! *shakes fists in defiance*

The new PS2 has an external power supply just like the gamecube, not only does it allow them to make it much smaller but it also means that there shouldn't be that damn noisy fan whurring the whole time. It drives me mad when trying to watch a DVD. Sony took a trick out of Ninty's book!

The PS2 is the king here in Japan ! Last time i looked The PS1 outsold the X-box. Sorry - but the X-box only did well in America.

It's a fact. Not just speculation.

What's particularly interesting about the new SCPH-70000, however, is that it cannot use the Hard Drive (HDD) needed for games such as Final Fantasy XI, and well, Final Fantasy Xi's expansion packs. It has also been confirmed that some software will not be compatible with the new unit, but what those titles are have not been revealed.

Uhhhhhh...8MB HDD?

Xbox ships with 8 to 10GB drives...you can upgrade them if you feel like it too.

Well, I've had 3 PS2's break. Xbox is still running strong. There, now you know one (of many).

Also, when's the last time you used a PC? 1998? I hate Windows because it sucks when it comes to organization and multi-tasking. Not just because it's Microsoft.

XP Pro is pretty stable, if you're not an idiot about it. It's not as nice to use, and I prefer OSX, but the senseless bashing of Microsoft just makes people dislike macs...

i'm not trying to troll here.

When i made my comment about the hard drive, the news stories reported that they didn't know about the hard drive, obviously when you replied they had.

The 8mb hard drive comment by someone was obviously a typo.

I use windows machines regularly at uni, they run XP and while i agree that its better than previous versions of windows it still can mess about sometimes, but so does everything if not properly maintained. I'm not being an idiot about it, i simple said that "some" PC's running windows weren't stable. I didn't say that all Windows machines sucked. I said nothing of the sort which is what you are implying.

I don't sensely bash microsoft, i own a microsoft mouse and numerous other microsoft products. They have a bit of a bad reputation but they aren't the golden boys some people want to believe. Neither are Apple for that matter!!!

You obviously prefer Xbox to Playstation and you have more than enough reason to, 3 of them broke and that sucks big time. I bet sony didn't help you out at all on any of the 3 occasions? i don't think their after sales support is what it used to be. Anyway no matter what i say i'm sure i can't convince you that playstations are better than xbox but im not trying to, this was a thread about playstation not xbox. But the comparissons always come and start silly misunderstandings like this.
Why are we so quick to label people?

Well, I just picked up my Playstation "two" from Coconuts... it's not even out of the box yet and I am super-psyched....because.... it has a digital optical line out!!! I can plug it right into my Sony DVD receiver with 5.1 surround!

:D

Maybe the old fat Playstation 2 had this option..I never had one of them.

#1 Request should be 4 controller ports....so you do not have to buy an accessory to be able to play with more than 2 people.......for goodness sakes Nintendo has been including 4 ports since the N64.
Loading time would be great. The PS2 was almost unbearable sometimes at loading games.

Traded in my old PS2, which is starting to get that disc read error symptom, last weekend at EB for the deal they had - trade in a PS2, get $100 towards a PSTwo. Nice deal! Unfortunately they don't have the PSTwo. Still don't to this day. While EB Games (the site) and Amazon has it shipping in 24 hours. :p

haha, Raven VII that's great, maybe i should try and buy one 2nd hand for a few beans....

does anyone know if the new playstation 2 will play DVDs from other countries??? or is there a hack so i can? i have no idea if the old ps2 could or not, anyone have any idea??? (i'll be getting a new one as i never actually got round to buying one over the last few years!)

I just got mine all set up...playing vice city. This thing is tiny. Slightly bigger than your average DVD case.

Not trying to start anything here just providing a counter point to yours so there is both sides of the story.

I got my PS2 the day they were released here in the US and I have had it ever since with many thousands of hours of use as a dedicated DVD player and for gaming and it's still going without a hitch. So not all of them die. Actually I do realize there are quite a few failures but I wonder what sort of percentage that makes up of the total number of PS2s on the market. Since the PS2 is the biggest seller it would makes since by the percentages that they would have the highest number of failures. Though without real numbers it doesn't mean they are better or worse then the next product when it comes to failures.
