Sony's 'PlayStation Vue' Live Streaming TV Service Shutting Down January 30, 2020

That’s why a company like Roku should get into basic cable streaming. They dominate the streaming hardware side so why not make it easier for their older customers to drop their cable TV service from the greedy cable companies?

The last thing we need is for Roku to get their hands on content.

I tried both PS Vue and FuboTV and decided to keep FuboTV as it was waaaay better. I have zero complaints with FuboTV, hopefully they won’t shut down anytime soon.

I did their 7day trial earlier this month and was really pleased with them but ultimately couldn't commit to their service as they don't have ESPN.

Wasn’t PlayStation Vue the only streaming service to offer ALL the Hallmark movie channels. I think there were like 3 or 4. Other streaming providers either had 1 or 2 but not all of them.

We’re on YouTube tv as well but I only see the prices going up later with them as well. Outside of locals I don’t really use it much. Might just get an antenna.

I hope you’re wrong about the prices, but it also would make sense if they do have more a fluctuation of users gravitating towards YouTube TV, especially being that it’s still really in its infancy. Although, if the services keep me happy with YouTube TV, I don’t mind paying a price increase as long as I’m content with everything.

This is sad news, ps Vue had one of the better portfolios of sso and tv logins of all the streaming services. Sigh, waiting for a vendor to just sell me sso credentials, I don’t need live. Philo is great price but limited selection.

Noooooooo!!!!!! Oh my god this is devastating. We love PS Vue from the price to the channel selection, to the interface and the fact that you can have 5 devices at once. It’s by far the best of the streaming services for live tv imo

edit - also the ability to watch 2-4 channels at once in split screen.

I’m with YTTV and I think it’s the best among the streaming services. It’s way better than DTVN, which is what I came from when ATT raised prices in 2018.

True, but I’d wager very few actually subscribe to all of those concurrently. I sure don’t. But I’m one of those “old” millennials in their mid 30s.

Most of their packages are filled with junk channels. With the exception of History channel and Nickelodeon, I think YTTV offers pretty much everything and then some. They’re pretty similar. And YTTV’s UI is much better, in my opinion.

I was hearing cable would be dead today, 5 years ago. :)

Also, your kids ain’t paying the bills... yet. They’ll change their minds about cable once they’re on their own and they have to pay separate bills for 5-6 services to get all their favorite shows.
Na, they watch awful YouTube stars. They don’t even watch shows. They won’t need 5 - 6 subs. They’ll choose what interest them and be done with it.

Also, I didn’t say 5 years. I’ve heard the naysayers say cable isn’t going anywhere, based on 2019, doesn’t look too promising. This is happening slowly, but it’s happening. On demand / live streaming is the future. Channel surfing is dying a slow death.

Exactly.

We've had scheduled live TV since the beginning... but I don't see how it can last forever. The whole system will change eventually.

The idea of having to be home at 8:30pm on a Tuesday to watch a particular show seems ridiculous in the on-demand age of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.

I'm 42 years old and I still pay for cable... but I don't watch much on TV. It's mostly for background noise or if I actually remember to DVR something.

But a 15 year old today certainly isn't watching TV like kids did in the old days.

So what will "TV" look like in 10 years when they're 25 years old?

I'm wondering how much longer there will be these "channels" that pump out a certain show on a certain day at a certain time every week.

It seems silly to deliver content that way.

Networks are just digging their own graves.

To millennials, watching TV means Amazon Prime Video, HBO Now, Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and the likes.

Sports was probably the only thing that kept people from leaving entirely.
Well I’m a millenial and i still watch TV even though I have streaming services. The only thing I don’t watch on TV is ironically the tv shows. I don’t think I’m the only one.

I basically dvr sports games. Works great for that. Has acc network. Maybe a couple of shows on locals which turn into on demand garbage but beats buying them.

Good thing about YouTube tv is the unlimited dvr. A show like jeopardy I add to library. We watch whenever. Shows that are nice to have available but you might not waste space on if you only had a traditional dvr.

snip...So far Sling is the best bang fo the buck - funny to think its origins are Blockbuster Video... lmao.
Didn't Sling start as Slingbox, an Echostar company where you connected their box to your cable box and could "sling" your cable channels outside the home?

Curious to know where Blockbuster fits in, I wasn't aware of that fact.

TIA

Yes if companies don't respect humans, they will be closed or merged with some other companies. Not only respecting innovations should be there.

No, AT&T is slowly replacing U-Verse and DirecTV with AT&T TV Now. Soon it will be the norm and back to cable prices. The networks will say "Hey, AT&T is giving us more money! YTTV, Hulu, Fubo, and Sling, Give us More Money!" Prices go up and we're back to where it was before cutting the cord. The only gain from this will be we get to watch Live TV on our phones.

AT&T is launching another streaming service. AT&T TV Now is hemorrhaging subscribers. I have a feeling they're probably going shut that down at some point and how people will move over to their new plan.

Already covered 10-28-2019:
AT&T TV NOW Will Merge Into HBO MAX & AT&T TV is Delayed Until Early 2020
"AT&T also announced that in the future, HBO MAX will be how AT&T offers live TV streaming. This lines up with an earlier report that then DIRECTV NOW (now called AT&T TV NOW) will be merging into HBO MAX. AT&T did make it clear that would not happen on day one but did say eventually HBO MAX will be how they offer live TV streaming in 2021. "
Additionally:
HBO Max Will Be Free to AT&T’s HBO Subscribers

Total bummer. I'm a current subscriber and love it for the price and reliability. My only other live TV streaming experience was with DirecTV Now/ AT&T Now and it was absolutely terrible (But I did get a "free" Apple TV 4K out of the promotion at the time). With the prices going the way they are, it might be just time to get an antenna for local channels and be done with it altogether.

So THIS story makes the front page on Mac Rumors, yet not one single mention about the new Nvidia Shield TVs released yesterday..........

PS Vue is a service available to iOS and tvOS users. PS Vue also integrates with Apple TV app. So relevant to Macrumors.

Nvidia Shield debuting a new model...... not so much.

Do people actually watch that much TV ?

For me, Hulu with ads ($5.99 / month), a Roku (lots of free content including Pluto TV), and an over the air antenna satisfies all my needs.

Apparently! If it wasn't for live sports, I would be fine with just Netflix and Hulu w/ ads.

You will not get ESPN but have you tried an over the air antenna for live sports ?

Note - For people who want to use an antenna, it usually isn't a matter of plugging it in and it works. It can take hours of carefully positioning it before you get good results but it's worth it.

Really sad to hear this! I have been using them for years, now I guess I will try Sling or YouTube TV.

Anyone have any other ecommendations? I already have Hulu and Netflix, but would like to still have Live TV.
After much reading and testing here is our (mostly) spouse-approved setup:

OTA antenna, installed by DirectTV ($149, has nothing to do with their sat service) connected to AirTV box to stream to our 4 TVs. Sling often has specials for AirTV.
Sling Blue + Sports Extra for regional sports ($35/month) - Sling guide includes our OTA channels, so pretty easy to navigate/flag favorites.
For ESPN, my mother-in-law's Comcast login on the ESPN app :) (or add Sling Orange for $15 additional)
Roku Streaming Stick+ added to TVs without built-in Roku interface. Apple TV's Sling app doesn't integrate the AirTV OTA channels so I prefer Roku.

It’s a direct competitor to Apple, in that case why has this site reported on new Google and Amazon product launches before? And before Apple TV was ever announced for the Fire TV.
