If you can wait till Dec, I would seriously look into this, the Asus Transformer Prime.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/09/transformer-prime-detailed-10-inch-super-ips-display-12-hour/

it looks nice, but a major con about anything that is not the iPad is that I can't make pages documents (I'm not even sure if you can make word documents) which will be a main purpose for me buying a tablet in the first place. I want to be able to take notes in class and then be able to sync with my mac.

I'm always leery with Sony stuff. They have a long history of bringing out half baked items. (Minidisk player, clie, their digital cameras that all take different memory stick formats, etc)

And it runs Flash?

Does it matter? Flash was officially killed off.

And besides that, the ipad can run Flash as well. Photon web browser.

I am looking into buying a tablet. Of course I want it to be made by apple, but at the iPad's current stage, it does not offer me what I really want (it has no ports for USB, memory cards, etc... and has to be plugged into a computer to function). I think that the Sony Tablet S seems like a sufficient compromise, but I haven't actually used one, not like I have been able to try out the iPad. What is anybody's opinion on this. Is the tablet S a good decision or should i wait until Apple comes out with a new iPad [that I am hopeful they will eventually make] that will fit my needs?

Also, I am not quite sure of the spec differences, but price-wise, they are both okay for me.

You don't have to use a computer for iOS devices to work with iOS5.

You can wireless synch but its just plug in and play, so for example just plug into your computer and it be viewed as an external storage device.

Heck, if you don't want to be chained, just grab a usb stick and transfer or dump the stuff on a micro sd card.

I will say this

There are tablets with better specifications but it isn't about having the fastest processor.

It's about, in no particular order

iOS functionality
iCloud
iTunes match
iOS
Apple tv mirroring
App store
Home sharing
Wifi sync

Even if you don't own other apple products it's an excellent tablet. If you own apple products it's a joy to use.

Even the app store on its own makes it better and more functional than android tablets, unless you want something quite niche.

I know this is an Apple forum and we are expected to say buy the Apple but all fanboy logic aside you have to look at the apps and support.

Your tablet is only as good as the software available for it, you just simply can't beat the versatility, growth and support from the Apple app store community.

Go Apple for the tablet!

This. If you can try your tablet out before you make a decision. I have a few friends who started with Android tablets and switched to Apple for the apps alone. Many people will start of thinking that they will just use it for browsing, until they see the potential and then want more apps.

You could always get it from a place with a return policy too so if you try it and its not for you you can return it or exchange it.

I definitely agree with the whole app store thing (as of right now), but isn't Android ICS supposed to make it better?

Does anyone know anything about Windows 8 tablets. I saw some developer previews and it looks pretty smooth and awesome. I can't seem to find definite answers about releases dates, prices, or the companies that will make tablets that will have Windows 8 on them.

Well you can assume that most companies that make windows computers will make Windows Slates and Tablets. There are no definitite release dates yet.

Back on track, I think that the superior ergonomic design of the Sony tablet is proof that Apple protecting its patents is good because it forces other companies to develop innovative designs. Otherwise Sony would have banged out another Samsung/iPad rip.

Update

just wanted to stop in to say that I think I'm going to buy the Transformer Prime. The starting price is $499 for 32GB which is awesome and it runs the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quadcore processor which, from watching demos, looks great. It is also ICS upgradeable which I'm hoping will be a big upgrade from all of ther android operating systems because it was a major reason to get an iPad. Things like gaming though will be amazing on this thing and it has a dock for a nice keybaord. Its definietely a perfect match for what I want. Maybe I'll look at the iPad 5 :) in a few years.

I hope developers actually make some games for this thing also I am excited to use one and read some in depth reviews on actual performance.

Congrats on the decision. It is important for you to be happy with your decision.

Thanks and I agree. I always have supported Apple, but I have never actually tried android; I can't say I don't like it until I try it.

This is a pro Apple forum where it would be very rare to find a fair & objective report on a Brand no one here cares about or owns. Most likely you will get critical comments on any competitors.

When the competition absolutely sucks, the nature of replies will be predictable.

Even if there's some positive aspect to the Sony product or most other non-ipad tablets, there is usually something overwhelmingly lousy about them that 9 times out of 10 it doesn't make the purchase worth it. That's really the one of the problems with the current tablet competition. And it's a big problem - big enough, in fact, that Apple is running away with the tablet market, creating an iPod-like situation.

Very simply, Apple has perfected the basics of a touch-based device. No matter how many features the competition would like to cram inside a slab, the basics are usually sorely lacking in terms of how the interface interacts with the hardware - that is, optimization. And optimization is a pretty being deal when it comes to creating the best User Experience possible.

This isn't as simple as Pro-Apple, con everyone else, though it's remarkably easy (and in many cases understandable) to hold such a view. However, when the competition is so far behind Apple in User Experience, most of the commenters who happen to make that a priority (which is only natural) will warn prospective buyers of non-Apple tablets to be careful about what they're about to get themselves into. Buyer's remorse sucks.
