I've had both colors of the phone, currently have the white, mainly because the store only had white available at the time. It has grown on me so its cool...
I haven't had screen protectors on my iphones until now. I got the belkin clear ones and you can hardly tell its there. Cleans off easy and some ease of mind knowing the front won't get scratched if I put my keys in the same pocket...
As for cases...I like the phone without the case, but I did use one for awhile. I used the Incase ones, but they crack at the corners if you take them on and off...which is a habit of mine...so therefore I don't use it anymore....

I use a bumper simply for better grip.

A SGP carbon fibre back and lucky labs strips to protect the steel antenna band from the brushing a bumper can sometimes cause.

I've tried expensive and cheaper shields and concluded I don't like the feel of them when using the screen ,and some give an orange peel effect. It's down to preference.

Ref the reply on jailbreaking.
Get to know your device well and do lots of homework before thinking about jailbreaking.
