Very eerie indeed

This thread is hilarious

thanks for the tips guys

I'm still get used to using my new MBP 13" laptop and have some pain on the back of my hand. I've changed the track pad settings to tap to click and will use the tips mentioned in this thread.

Ahaha, I don't have a camera handy or I would continue the photo trend above.

I use the trackpad the same way, with my thumb resting on the outside edge, hand relaxed, using one finger to point/tap-to-click, sometimes 2 fingers to scroll.

I only ever use the thumb+finger and actual clicking if I'm clicking and dragging files around a lot, sometimes tap-to-click gets annoying there.

Using the trackpad makes your whole arm sore? ^^ WOW...

You must have needed a lie down after using the keyboard?

Do you call an ambulance after using a pencil? :p

Most retarded thread ever..

I find it funny, it's just a matter to get used to it, i don't find it hard at all and i have no muscular fingers or something

i guess your hands would bleed if you switch to a standard pc keyboard with high plastic keys (sarcasm)

well if no one else is piping up with this issue, I am going to try to just tap with both my thumb and finger and see if that hurts less than clicking with the thumb and tapping with the finger.
I made the tapping action faster so perhaps that will work better for click and drag.
Meanwhile, just in case my hand doesn't hurt less, I am going to hackintoshize an old thinkpad and see if I like the weird nub better.

Do you have to use YOUR finger? Could you not borrow one?

Buy a Logitech Performance MX mouse. Most comfortable ergonomic wireless mouse I have ever used. Plus, it's got the nano receiver, so it only sticks out 2 mm out of the laptop.

While I do believe that the MBP's trackpad is the best out of any laptop, I personally think that trackpads are fundamentally flawed. I can't use them for more than a few minutes without my hand cramping up. They are just naturally uncomfortable.

Sorry it took so long for me to add to that response, I was just finishing up my two-hours of Dark Forces on my iBook Clamshell using only the touch pad.

Now then, if that Logitech mouse uses a bluetooth dongle...couldn't you just sync it with the internal bluetooth receiver in the mac?

No, it uses RF, so you need the receiver.

If you want, for a little cash ;), i can write an application that "clicks" automatically when you say "Click".
So you won´t need to use your finger, but if you have a weak voice or throat could be a problem.

kkkkkkk

Sorry by the joke!:D

Just a little tip.
If you get sore by using the trackpad, by all means, don't buy a guitar :D

btw, have any guitarists noticed that left hand doesn't work too well on the glass trackpad because of the thickened skin on the fingers?

I'm certain there is an equivalent bluetooth mouse, perhaps even the same model or series. I simply can't bother myself to carry one more thing that needs to be plugged in, I get peaced off by my iPhone cable as it is.

Besides, the last time I broke out my mouse for something other than gaming was...uh...when did that whole skirmish in Iraq break out?

The receiver is so small that you van pretty much leave it plugged in all the time, even when transporting.

Yes the Unibody trackpads are much harder to click. If you do not like using tap-to-click or, simply, you need to use the hard-click, your thumb hurts. But you cannot speak about this issue with zealots: they usually answer "use tap-to-click, it's soooo fantastic". As you might have already realized from the previous answers. In fact, when the internal parts could be easily accessed with the previous generation of Unibodies, there were tons of people trying to reduce the pressure needed by and the noise produced by the hard-click.

Actually, my entire arm started hurting after I bought an iPhone. I do not know why, but the iPhone is causing me a great amount of pain.

I don't know if it's related or if you already tried this, but the multi-touch trackpad of the MBP means you can keep your finger on the pad while clicking with your thumb, and vice versa (move the pointer around with your finger, while resting your thumb on the touchpad, too). It's just like operating a "regular" trackpad with buttons.

Although I did find it uncomfortable at first since the trackpad is the button, it's lower than physical buttons, and my thumb seems to have to reach longer to press.

When I first used it my whole arm was more sore. Now my pointer finger and hand in general is getting more and more sore.

You know, this thread as been an astonishment to me. I finally showed it to a colleague of mine who teaches in the Engineering Department here on campus (well, I sent him a link).

I don't mean to diminish anyone's pain but the physics just don't work out here. Do you realize the amount of force you are suggesting it would take to cause physical damage to your body tissue and ligaments? Given the size of the object you are trying to move (the trackpad), the direction you want it to go (down so gravity is on your side), the distance you want it to move (minuscule), the mass of the object vs you (you are huge in comparison), and the collateral damage in this endeavor upon you...well, its just stunning.

I believe Apple will be as skeptical...

There would have to be something seriously wrong with the mechanism in the product (which seems unlikely give its length in production) or people need a more healthy diet...

-P

This is the funniest reasoning I have ever read :D And it comes from an engineering dept!!!

Tell people who get carpal tunnel syndrome by just moving a feather-light mouse on a flat and smooth surface. Tell them that their arm has evolved to allow them to throw lances and stones.

It's so funny. Thanks.

:eek::D

Just checking, did the OP play with the MBPs in the Apple store? Maybe his is broken or stuck.

+1. The gay character from Glee comes to mind. Not that I watch that show.

touch to click

I have been trying to use the tap to click only for the last week or so since all you people said oh use tap to click only with pointer finger and index, its so great.

Tap to click with pointer finger and index is really really annoying. I find myself tapping a billion times, then it doesn't select or it deselects in the middle of doing something. It is way slower than just clicking with my thumb. Way less control over moving around. "click" and drag is difficult.
If I want to get anything done fast, I use the thumb.
If tap to click is so great, why is it off by default? I think the fact that the trackpad is more difficult to use is a design flaw.
I can't believe everyone is just giving up usage of the cool opposable thumb just because of this terrible design. It would serve apple engineers right if their thumbs evolved away.

Furthermore, I have to hold my hand sideways to use the fingers only tap to click and that is making the side of my hand hurt.

I really just hate this new trackpad. I hate it. I don't care if you apple employees and engineers say it's retarded or whatever to hate it, this is the worse apple laptop I have ever had.
The trackpad sucks, is not conducive to repetitive motion, and requires you use a desk to be comfortable. If I wanted to use a desk, I would have gotten a desktop computer with a mouse!

I was working on someone's machine today thinking omg I love using a mouse, it's so easy compared to the horrible trackpad on these laptops.

The keys are cheap and have already broken a few times.
The screws are constantly falling out of the bottom.

Then get a wireless mouse. And I guess I am still confused how tap to click hurts your finger. It's a very light touch to the trackpad.
