Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today shared bad news for fans of the iPhone mini.

In a live-streamed Q&A session today, Gurman said that Apple currently has no plans to reintroduce a smaller iPhone model.

Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 mini in September 2023, and it has not offered a mini model since then. Apple is not expected to release an iPhone 17 mini this year, and Gurman's revelation likely rules out an iPhone 18 mini next year too, given Apple's multi-year planning and development cycle for future iPhone models.

Since it discontinued the third-generation iPhone SE last month, Apple no longer offers any new iPhone models with under a 6-inch screen size. All of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models that Apple currently sells have between 6.1-inch and 6.9-inch displays, whereas the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini had 5.4-inch displays. The final iPhone SE had a 4.7-inch display, albeit with thicker bezels that increased the device's overall size.

While there is a vocal group of customers who wishes that Apple would bring back the iPhone mini, the smaller model simply never sold well enough for the company to continue offering it, according to market research firms. It is not much of a surprise that Apple is not currently reconsidering this decision, but it helps to set expectations for those who may still be holding out hope. Do not expect another iPhone mini any time soon.

The full Q&A audio stream can be replayed on Bloomberg's website.

Gurman last year last minute said “there won’t be any new AirPods Max models” and in last minute guess what Apple did indeed release new USB-C AirPods Max model.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. The rumored dimensions for the foldable iPhone imply it will be an iPhone mini Pro. Using the outer screen will feel like an iPhone mini with the added option to use a larger screen and obviously a real all-day battery.

iPhone mini fans are going to be proven right in the end when this becomes Apple’s flagship device.

But now we all have larger, more expensive iPhones! Yay!

What I really wanted was a larger, cheaper iPhone. Something like the rumored but never released SE+ - a big phone without the "pro" camera nonsense.

It's funny, I actually own a 12 Mini. It was free, and I NEVER use it because it's just too small. I'll probably eventually stick it to the wall as a lighting controller.

I am not holding out hope, but I am also not in a hurry to replace my iPhone 12 mini. It is good that devices getting supported longer. While it didn't sell well the iPhone 12 mini is one of my favourite iPhone's. When I buy a new iPhone I think I will just adept to the the larger size. I will get used to it. But thus far there hasn't been a selling point for me to upgrade.

It’s not just the lack of demand, the biggest problem with mini and main reason Apple canned the product line is the battery drain issue that Apple could not fix with current technology. Simply put the 5G modems Qualcomm provides just uses too much power on mini. Apple tried fixing it but ultimately threw in the towel.

They might revisit the idea of mini phone once they get the power optimization done right with C series modem but by then, Apple might not bother to go further because everyone moved on from mini form factor phone.

At least here in the United States, it’s been molded into our brains that, bigger is better. You need a bigger house…you need a bigger car…you even need bigger “body parts.” Bigger equals more success.

This attitude trickled down to electronics. So, color me not surprised about this news! The only thing that I need big, is my bank account/brokerage/retirement funds.

As the iOS ux gets ever more fully featured, with the need to expose said features, a 6.1 inch screen is feeling like the minimum nowadays.

Long gone are the days when apple controversially moved to a 4 inch screen with the iPhone 5.

For all of the mini fans out there, I know you’re frustrated, but please stop beating this dead horse. Maybe a folding iPhone will work for you, more or less depending on its size. Now if the price works for you is another matter.

Update - In hindsight, maybe I was a little too harsh with my words. I still believe it’s highly unlikely we’ll get another mini, unless Apple’s possible success with a folding iPhone motivates Tim to green light a smaller foldable which some mini owners might consider a close enough replacement. Apple could’ve turned an updated mini into a new SE, but unfortunately they didn’t take that path. My mom has a 13 mini and she prefers the smaller size. Eventually even she will have to move on. It is what it is.

You are mistaken, seeing as a phone the size of the Mini would never unfold to be anywhere close to 7.8 inches.
Look at my comment above, it’s likely to be shaped like the Huawei Pura X, super wide.
That way when it’s unfolded, the aspect ratio is a lot closer to an iPad than most current foldable’s.
So yes, even though the screen will technically measure 5.5 inches, it will not be anywhere close to the same size as the Mini.

I don’t need it soon because I have an iPhone 16 Pro, but I would like it as a potential upgrade.

Hope my 13 mini will still last for many years... Apple other phones are way too big for me.

Holding my Mini until further notice

I plan to keep my 2 yr old mini to at least Tim stepped down, and hopefully some 'sane customer person' have replaced him.
But if they don't relese a smaller iPhone again - ther's 2 options:
1 - Apple release a flip that is small enough in smallest version that can replace the mini.
2 - The Samsung flip looks and seems very nice otherwise.

The Mini actually had an obvious user base though, kids/teens (including mine) and those who don't like/want/need a massive screen on a bulky phone that won't fit in their pocket. It might not be the majority, but it's more than a small niche.

Unlike the Plus which is now obsolete, there is still a market for a capably-spec'd or even Pro-level iPhone Mini. Sadly, the beancounters are in charge and they aren't smart enough to realise that market trends, as spouted by their beloved market research firms, aren't always reliable and customers are fickle. Apple are just another quantitative company these days, when they used to be all about the qualitative.
There’s no market. Per this thread only 22 want a new mini hahaha

The reason the iPhone mini didn't sell well wasn't solely because of the screen size. I believe didn't sell as well because of the poor battery life, the price point/marketing and lack of pro features. Unless your number one feature priority was a smaller screen and you were willing to sacrifice everything else, you didn't buy a mini.
