Diamond like carbon, like the sapphire screen, is harder than most things but not completely unscratchable (there are harder things out there). Perhaps he caught it on a diamond ring or something?
Not sure, but next time I see him I'll ask to take a photo of it. From memory - the edges of the strap is scratched, not the watch itself.

Yes it does scratch as easy. My friend has SB SS and the silver is showing through the black - even though he said he never bumped it hard against anything.
Your friend is the first guy I have heard of, with a scratched Space Black - the sport and silver steel, yes, but not the Space Black.

I've had mine since the start of September, and it looks brand new - I have several stainless steel watches and they all get small scratches and such, but this really is amazing

I was getting ready to purchase one and I was wondering if it scratches as easily as the silver model? I would be wearing it at work and like the subtle color. Thank you.
The Space Black SS Apple Watch is the most durable package you can get from Apple. I was a very early buyer and experienced a problem with coating scraping off 2 symmetrically located spots inside the clasp. The areas were not visible but concerning since the deterioration might continue. I believe this was an example of a reported manufacturing glitch that occurred very early on and was fixed quite a while ago. Apple promptly replaced the entire bracelet and it has been impervious to everything ever since. I think that Apple is secretly constructing the Space Black SS out of dragon hide. ;)

I bought it since it launch, and wear it every day, at home, at work, zero extra protection. My baby boy (1 year old) try to scratch it every day. So far, nothing can leave a mark on it. If Apple also make an iPhone with Sapphire glass and DLC coating, I will be more than happy to upgrade my iphone straight away.

I would definitely purchase an iPhone that was space black DLC and sapphire crystal.

Lol I know. After watching videos of people dropping them on floor tile, it would be a disaster. I recant my previous statement about sapphire crystal and will stick with gorilla glass.

The screen would almost certainly shatter from the slightest drop.

I know, but I never drop my iphone, and there is no guarantee that the gorilla glass can survive from a drop anyway. However, I hate any scratch on the screen, and I don't like screen protector either.

If I have to choose.
1) glass shatter from a drop, unless you have a very good case to protect it.
2) glass scratched, unless you have screen protector.

I will still choose number 1.

May be it's the reason why Apple don't go to this way, because they don't want to be blamed by the public that they make "easy to break" phone.

Anyway, I am still in doubt if the sapphire glass is that "weak", I never heard anyone can break the rolex's glass. May be the touch screen ability is limiting it's straightness. Or there is some other limiting factor. For example, weight concern (may need a thicker / heavier glass to make it drop resist + scratch proof).

I use a tempered glass protector on my 6 plus and I'm on my 2nd protector. 1st one save my screen from being destroyed and the one on my phone now is still perfect after 5 months.

Never gunna happen but a quick release replaceable sapphire glass screen would be amazing.

Near scratch proof screen and if accidentally shattered, just unclip and clip on a new one. Price point around £70-100 wouldn't be too hard to swallow.

(Will file the idea next to my wish for a colour matched sticker that covers the bottom gap on official cases.)

Anywhere to see pictures of the black stainless steel Apple Watch with straps suck as the classic buckle? I'm curious to see how noticeable the normal stainless steel from the strap looks connected to the black watch
