Why did they discontinue the darker color of the iPhone 5 in favor of the Space Gray?

I am not 100% sure, but I believe I read somewhere that the Silver model is raw aluminum while the Slate model was sprayed black/slate, so it scuff easier.

With the space gray model I believe they are now adding color dye to the aluminum, instead of spray, but with this process you can't add too much dye to the aluminum otherwise it will not come out right, same goes for the Gold model.

I prefer the look of the white iPhone 5/5S, but I will probably avoid getting white on the next model iPhone I purchase (sometime around the "6S" or "7"). My current white iPhone 5 really shows the grime around the home button and the top seam between the glass and the chassis.

I found this article funny considering the points that everyone is making. From personal experience in the great LA Area. Over the past 3 weeks, Space Grey has been available far more often than the Silver and Gold iPhone 5S.

I personally like the space gray but the lady prefers the white face-plate so Silver or Gold it is. Finally got one two days ago after 3 weeks of daily check-ins. It's been like a treasure hunt that just doesn't end. Looking forward to doing the same when the ipad mini 2 comes out.

My space grey 5S is enclosed in a blue Cygnett case. I guess 99.9 per cent of 5s's are also in cases of some colour or other. So who gives a ****** what colour 5s you get?

I always pick a black iPhone or iPad, and always will as long Apple sells it.

I stay off white iPhone or any other white smartphone mainly due to cosmetic/appearance issue.

I don't like the visibilty of thin display black border, the effect of translucency around the screen, and also sensor holes.

Pure sore eyes and distractive for me. Definitely not as white as in commercial photoshoot while black iPhone always simply .. Black and stealthy

Honestly I am not to surprised to see gold being the least wanted.
Reason being is out side of the people who like flash it not as much wanted. It is not a phone color that is really appropriate in a professional environment. Most people like their phones not to be flashy. Yes the ones you see are the flashy ones but most people like the very basic professional looking color.

Now the ones who will complain the most about not being able to get what they want will be you guess it the people who tend to like flashy stuff.

Grey and Silver are much more professional looking than gold.

As for the 5c. Well they do not offer really much there in professional world. People do not like white because it shows dirt and the phone does not look as clean as the 5s or the 5 so blue and green which tend to be people's favorite color wins.

So you're telling me that the only color option Apple gave on launch day was the most popular?

Image

3rd person in line:

Person "I want the gold iPhone 5s"
Apple employee "We don't have it"
Person "Can I get the White model"
Apple "We don't have it"
Apple "Would you like the Space Gray Model?"
Person "Do I have a choice?"
Apple "Yes, you can not buy a phone today"
Person "Fine, I will take Space Gray"
Apple "Awesome, this is a very popular model, everybody wants it"

This.

Of course they're going to sell more of one color, if it's the only option available! SMH:eek:

Oh dear. As a male owner of a yellow iPhone 5C I appear to have inadvertently become an Apple hipster.:D

You are not in the U.S., so you don't count. ;)

For one, these are just U.S. statistics. For another, I have a feeling the yellow 5c is going to be far more popular in Asia, where the color yellow has great symbolic value. Actually that's a big cultural difference between East and West. In the West, colors are a preference or matter of decor. In the East, colors have meanings. In China, yellow is the color of the Emperor.

Did they just not produce enough white and gold phones this time? If they were all produced equally and grey was most popular, it would be the one seeing constraints...[COLOR="#808080"

Hmmm, you must be one of those 5%

It's not just supply constraints. It's also that the gold and silver are really not very different, so space grey is the only meaningfully different option

I am one of the apparently rare males with a yellow 5C. But it was a choice of which color I disliked the least. I'd have preferred red, black, brown, tan, navy, dark green, and maybe more, had they existed.

I think that the yellow is too pale, just like all the 5C colors except white. They should have made a bright yellow, blue, red, etc. And they also should have it black too, IMO.

Maybe Lamborghini have there signature colour all wrong?

But the Lambo yellow is a bright yellow, the 5C is on the pale side and not very flashy.

avocado green, sky blue, flamingo pink, I get that. But 'space' grey? I don't get space grey.

really?

the researcher wrote:

"Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the Yellow iPhone 5C very much."

based on their own graphs, it looks like at least 300,000 people bought yellow iPhone 5c's in just 3 days on the opening weekend of sales alone.

what an idiotic, needlessly editorial statement.

I wanted a black space gray model but it was literally what they pushed on people why wouldn't it be the most popular. Bright house is the most popular cable company where I live and guess what it's the most popular whoaaa
