Hearing this news of malfunctioning computers out in space, I can't help but think...

Hi HAL! :D

Man, it's been so long since I've seen and read 2001... I can't recall, did they ever truly explain why he did what he did?

It's been a long time for me too, but wasn't it because of his computer logic? He was programmed to complete his mission, and view it as being important above all other concerns. When he believed the human members of the crew were going to jeopardise the mission, he started to kill them to ensure that they wouldn't turn the ship around or anything. I think the point was that HAL wasn't evil per se, but it was a flaw in his programming that made him behave the way he did.

As I say though, it's been a while since I read the book or saw the film too so I might be mistaken.

At least the shuttle is currently up there so if they have to abandon, they'll have a way down.

Not sure if there would be enough room on the shuttle for everyone...I thought it could only take seven astronauts. Either way, there is the Soyuz "life boat" if they ever need to abandon the space station.

Yeah they due have the Soyuz ship up there, but I think if they had to in an emergency they would fit an extra couple people on the shuttle.

Everyone should be fine. The real scary point will be when we retire the shuttle and we have to use nothing but russian hardware to get there. There should be a 3-5 year window until the Ares is ready to go. The computer was russian, so I have no idea what it ran and what hardware was involved.

On a side note, we could be going to mars right now, if someone could talk the senate out of 100 Billion. That really is a drop in the ocean when you think about it.

Why can't the building of the moonbase, the rockets, the space station, space flight infrastructure etc etc all be sub-contracted out to China ( or even New Zealand Look what Peter JAckson saved whilst making LOTR!)

But Seriously, Surely that 100 billion would be reduced to no more than about 10 or 20 billion in China??? They get some peachy contracts and we get a space race - everybody wins!!....

In Fact Steve Jobs could probably afford the whole thing himself - Foxconn could do it for him...

Imagine an Apple Space program - how cool would that be? Gleaming white rocket with a one button flight console and dashboard widgets for all the telemetry data :)

Are you mad? An Apple space program would cost at least twice a much as NASAs!!!

It would look good though :D

Yeah, I think you're right, although I thought it was even something more specific in terms of a logic flaw - I thought it might have something to do with the fact that he was programmed to be completely open and honest with the crew, yet he was also told to conceal the true purpose of their mission. Logically, if he were to kill the crew he wouldn't have to tell anybody and his commands would be satisfied!

I should read that book again, it's been too long... never read 3001 either, only the initial 3...

Our Leader, Steve Jobs, and the Organization, Apple, Inc., should create a top secret to create a Apple Space Shuttle to go to the Moon.

Think what this would do for AAPL's stock price!

They should build an Apple base on the Moon, shaped like the Apple Store in Manhattan, with all glass exterior and underground design.

Of course, everything on the shuttle and in the base would run Mac OS X.

Everyone will wear uniforms with the Apple logo, and communicate using iPhone.

I was going to say Get a Mac but thats not really helpful unless Apple.com delivers to space....
But they must have back up computers.. maybe ones that are more Vista compatible

The backup systems went down too. What good is triple redundancy when they all get ****ed up?

Don't you know anything? The Mexican space program would get it done for $200! :p
