I've definitely found the concept useful doing VLSI design work on UNIX workstations. I've found it less useful during home use because I tend to not multi-task quite as much when I'm at home.
I do find it odd though that the Leopard implementation lacks much "flashiness" to its look. Install Compiz or Beryl on a Linux distribution and your different desktops are full sized and your entire screen spins like a cube to reveal your different desktops. Superfluous? Yes. But really cool looking.
Here's a good compiz video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lawkc3jH3ws
In my far younger days I'd appreciate some of the flashy stuff more, but I've become a bit more minimalist lately in terms of how much wiz-bang I need in my UI, but the cube thing for the desktops is one thing I really like.
