Wacom has had a tablet you could work on directly with a stylus for some time now (but it cost more than i wanted to spend) i work in photoshop all day long and believe me working directly on the image with anything would be great! making paths would be so much easier !

Agreed!

IT seems to be a nobrainer.

They'd have to get it down to $500-$700. Otherwise might as well just get a Macbook. Seeing as how a Touch is $500 for 32gb not sure how they do that although I suppose it's costly in some ways to build something as small as a Touch.

Good in principle, however being someone who has used one personally, I wasn't that impressed. That being said, I'd have confidence in Apple taking that sort of a concept and making it better. However, in this case, "better" may involve incorporating one of Apple's favorite design philosophies - "simpler". In other words, Apple wouldn't make something as complex as that - they may improve on it, make it simpler, more minimal and so forth. Components rotating, flipping around etc. is somewhat un-Apple-like. ;) (And yes, I realize the iPhone/Touch has rotational features built in, however this is with respect to the device itself, not pieces and parts of it.)

I just remember the Toshiba was so hot, and also had no battery life. :(

Am I the only one who doesn't get excited imagining this? It seems gimmicky, and I don't get the feeling that a market for this exists. As it stands today, no sane person would choose a computer without a keyboard/mouse to be his "one and only". The keyboard and mouse are here to stay. Plus I'm a screen-cleaning fascist, and I couldn't handle the emotional trauma of filthy fingers touching my screen!

Ah crap... I'm also a neat freak. Damn I couldn't stand wiping off my screen all the time.

Certainly there are specialized fields—medical being one—that would LOVE it (and PAY for it).
Hardware for electronic medical records isn't the issue. The problem -- and still a very difficult one to solve, even with "gestures" -- is making data entry fast, simple, and 100% accurate for clinicians. Software is the limiting factor and will be for a long time yet. We equip our doctors with XP tablets to use with our EMR software; none of them ever use them in a tablet orientation for more than a day or so. The nurses are more likely to use them as tablets because they don't need a keyboard to input most of the data they are responsible for. (Vital signs measurements, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pain score, O2, weight, height, etc can all be done with a numeric keypad displayed on screen.) In fact, most of our doctors don't want to use a computer in the exam room anyway because it's more difficult to maintain eye contact with the patients. They're just as happy scribbling their notes on a paper progress note and then re-entering the data at the PC in their office later. Yes, that's horribly inefficient, but it lets them see their patients much faster. EMR sounds like a killer app for tablets, but the reality is that it doesn't offer any real advantage over a regular laptop or desktop. The portability and touch screen features just don't matter. The software is far more important.

I bet its going to be none of this. Something more radically different than what is already out there. Everything people are talking about on here is just a mish mash of stuff already out there.
When the touchscreen iPod rumors were flying around, people assumed that the iPod would be using a modified version of the existing iPod software, including a virtual click wheel. There were also rumors pointing to a late 2006 release date for that iPod.

It turns out that the iPod touch used the new iPhone OS, which was designed for the touchscreen.

Maybe something similar will happen with the "MacBook touch."

A tablet would have to be more instant-on like a Touch or iPhone. More of a consumer electronic device.

That would be the appeal over a laptop.

hello everyone this is my first post. i think that a mac tablet would be cool, but as alot of you have said it wouldnt be appealing to the masses. i think an even cooler idea for the next macbook or macbook pro would be to have the keyboard as a touch screen, instead of the monitor. imagine not pressing keys on the key board but just placing your fingers on a piece of glasslike material, which had all of the normal keyboard letters and numbers. this new keyboard would have to be backlite in a blue color, with the looks as a normal keyboard, but no keys popping up.

another cool alternative would be to have two screens on the new laptop, one where the monitor usually is, the other where you normally put your hands on the keyboard and track pad.

the screen that would be where the keyboard is now on the macbooks, but would not only act as a secong screen but also as the keyboard that could pop up and down on the screen like on the iphone, as well as piano keys for garageband, or a notepad, depending on what application you are working with or what your needs are.

This is so out of scope for apple that I don't think they would make it. It really doesn't bring any purpose other than it would look cool. And if an iphone costs $500 out of contract, there's no way this thing would be cheaper than a grand.

True, but as long as it was possible through a third party developer at least to use a stylus. Any app that makes use of a Wacom tablet would work fine this way.

Yep, nothing saying this couldn't happen I suppose...

Even better though. If someone also made a handwriting program that gives you a lined paper look further combined with a swivel webcam you could be taking notes, then hit record if the presenter starts making diagrams or is demonstrating something, yet allow you to continue note taking. Then in line with your writing you could start recording video or taking pictures. Afterwards you could review you notes and have the presentation sitting in line with them.

Handwriting technology like that could definitely be cool! Only problem is, a significant portion of the youth today would have to learn how to write again since they are so used to typing these days! :p ;) :D

[QUUOTE=thecartoonguy]I just remember the Toshiba was so hot, and also had no battery life. :([/QUOTE]

Yep, that sounds about right based on my experience as well.

Obviously apple thinks there is a market for this if they spent the time and resources obtaining patents and spending who knows how much money.

So, like a Nintendo DS? :p ;) :D

Ah, I love the Apple speculation...

This is a huge product announcement - it will probably wait til MacWorld 09.

i'm very interested!!

i'd love to see a tweener device, bigger than an iphone, smaller than a 12" notebook. something that does everything the iphone does but can also handle more pro apps. i didn't upgrade to a 3G because i was hoping for this.

Photographers

This product would be great for photographers tho. Multi-touch with photos sounds like a real thrill!

Regarding the linked article, it can't be that thin (i.e. like iPhone/iPod touch) if it includes a slot-loading SuperDrive?!

If they made an EEEpc copy that ran CS3 and Lightroom I'd buy it.

Though I get the feeling it'll be a 'style' laptop like the Air and no-one will buy it (Speaking from a UK point of view - cos no one seems to have bought an Air here)
