just a thought

macbook touch with a flip out iMAC like stand at the back. it cold stand like the imack and like somthing in 45° angel as well.

New MBPs were released during the promo last year (and new iMacs at the beginning of the promo). I think it's designed more to clear out iPod inventory.

I'm thinking both. They had this promo when I bought my iMac, which was introduced days before the promo ended. I was told I could not get the free iPod, because the promo didn't cover the newly updated iMac, only the old ones. And then an updated iPod came out a few days later.

o god, i can already see the lines. :[
as long as it has a couple of usb's and a monitor hook up, i would be all go. and i would want a pages and word 'touch' version. it could be like the air and not have an optical drive. i dont think that this tablet would really need one, cause it wouldn't be anyones only computer. I could carry this to class and take some notes, leave the macbook in my room. then when i get home or if i need to write a paper i would do that on the macbook. cause this thing wouldn't be the best in an office or home. just for when your out and about.

isn't it just beautiful? I'd shell out for one no doubt sorry its so big tho...

I bet on iBook. Apple wants "Mac" in every name of their Macintosh computers, so that iBook might be running something different than Mac OSX. Something like the iPhone.

I'd love a Macbook without the keyboard part and a pig touch screen. A vitrual trackpad and keyboard would work for current OSX apps.

iBook? Haven't we been here before... he says typing on his, let me see, oh yeah iBook.

Nice idea but marketing wise no, as it'll just confuse people about old(er) products.

Really now, this is the future

Desktops and Laptops may never really be replaced, but I think that a tablet would make life easier for many, many people. It would fill a big gap in mobile devices. I would never want to read a book on PDF with my iphone, give me a break it is just too small, and it is a pain to open up my macbook pro everytime I need a server admin book or a UNIX reference book. A touch tablet would fill this gap very well and it would also allow me to do many other day to day operations, without having to lug my laptop around my office. I am sure that someone would develop a pen to use with such a device, making it a great tool for all most every student in the world! I hope that something like this comes out soon, we are in need of something that allows us to access information without having to zoom in on an iphone, open up a laptop and sit down somewhere, or be at our desks. Have you people ever seen Star Trek? just think of all the uses a touch tablet may have. 10 years ago our iphones aka... "communicators" on star trek would have been a dream. Just think what the future holds.....

I just want a decent eBook reader for the Mac. Something that encompasses iTunes and a new screen technology that is better than Sony's and Amazon's efforts.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-D052; Blazer/4.5) 16;320x320)

I can see this happening...

Imagine a larger version of the iPod touch, running Mobile OS X. Very slim design like the MBA, but in a tablet form factor. No ports other than a dock connector and headphone, with a nonremovable battery. Maybe 0.3-0.5" thick. Runs all the App Store apps.
Specs:
Intel Atom processor
16 or 32 GB flash RAM
6-7" touch screen, 960x640 resolution (double the iPhone's)
GPS
Bluetooth
Wifi
$650

Include support for bluetooth keyboard, mouse, & network printing. Maybe even have an iSight built-in (if the Atom can handle it).

Market it as a computer complement....can't do everything a Macbook can, but does more than a touch or iphone (better web browsing, maybe word processing & email with a BT keyboard, maybe video iChat). Of course, you can stream your Mac's iTunes to it, or store songs & video on the device. Syncs just like an iPod touch with mobileme and iTunes.

Based on the estimated cost of the iPhone, I can see Apple making this for $300 or so, maybe even a little less, so it'll have a healthy profit margin.

Underpowered enough to not cut into Macbook sales, and a whole different product than an iPod touch. I would certainly buy one.

Think about it...

Think about it for a minute...
You're sitting on the couch in your Home Theater, watching your 62" HDTV, you're chillin to some Eagles and working on your Touchscreen Apple Tablet. You decide to watch a movie or play that old DVD Super Bowl game you never had time to watch until now. Maybe you'll work on your Presentation for work during commercials...
Mouse? Keyboard? Multiple Remote Controls? Monitor? Who needs all that stuff? you've got a Mac 'Touch' Tablet...(got an iPhone or iPod Touch with Version 2.0 software? Have you used Apple's 'Remote' App? Think of that as a Beta Test for THIS Touch Remote in your Tablet) Think about it, Apple's got this underused, under sold 'Hobby' equipment (Apple TV) out there, the BEST Touch Interface on the planet, you have a Mac (Desktop or otherwise), dutifully pumping out signals via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Airport... whatever. See any connections? You can DO IT ALL from the comfort of your favorite loungers, couch, patio / poolside lounger, where ever. Think about an easy to use, smooth, User Friendly, Elegant solution to any issue you face, living room, bedroom, Family Room, pool-side... watch out, there's an Apple in the house!!

MacTablet?

Without reading the 100+ comments, I might repeat the fact that a larger screen is costly. Perhaps a smaller 7 or 8 inch screen would make the cut with an expectation of a profit squeeze on the initial product. Another market, as an internet device, is China and other lower income countries. The iPhone will reach the upper middle class there; but I'd bet a lot of lower income purchasers would want more screen real estate, even if it's a second phone on the contract. K - 12 students are another potential market.

Docking a tablet to the screen ruins the touch interface as no one will want to work on a vertical surface. A wired connection could work if it lays down. What I believe is that Apple is working on a new interface between the phone/iPod size and the typical keyboard portable. We might see it; but I expect the operating chip options are better next year.

I'm with you! This kind of product wouldnt be released outside of the convention anyway, lets just get a real computer out first...

You're the type of person that holds technology back. It is a real computer. The iPhone is a real computer. A Blackberry is a real computer.

Just because you can't see how this technology can be applied practically doesn't mean someone else can't.

Will Apple do this? I don't know. But touch-based interaction technologies are most likely the way of the future. Try to keep on open mind.

If Apple are planning something like this it will be a 'MacBook Touch' rather than a tablet or cut down laptop - the picture posted above by Sousa203 looks spot on to me.

No need for any ports other than the dock connector and audio / video jack (everything can be done over BlueTooth and Wifi), no need for an optical drive and no need for large amounts of storage.

Price could be the big issue though there is a very obvious way round this - include 3G and sell it on contract through the existing iPhone carriers at a subsidises price. Offering it without 3G and contract as a more expensive option.

Selling it won't be a problem as there are plenty of uses, business alone would go crazy for it but there are plenty of uses at home as well. They could easily sell 10,000's to the pro music market alone, for use as a controller amongst other things. Plus someone will come up with a Star Trek case for it resulting in massive sales to all the Trekkies out there.

If it does include 3g, theres no way in hell I am buying this thing. I already have a brand new contract for my iPhone 3g. But I do agree that if Apple does something like this, it will be more of a Macbook, not tablet. I know I am going to want whatever this thing ends up being, but I am definitely not signing up for another contract....I'll just buy a regular macbook.

Macbook Touch

My personal interest would be in a book-sized device that could double as a desktop graphics tablet for photoshop and other artistic purposes as well as mobile browsing and ebook reader. I have been looking for such a device for a long time and have been sorely tempted many times by the aftermarket Mac tablet. Unfortunately, the price of the tablet continues to put me off.

If this device is even remotely similar to what is described (excepting the intriguing iMac Tablet concept mentioned on the first page of these comments) then I would be certain to buy one. I might even consider that iMac-style docking if it still permits use as a graphics pad in some sort of semi-wired configuration for working while charging and saving the battery.

In other words, I am one of the people this thing will be marketed to and I am very likely to buy one if it truly meets my needs and wants.

I want one. Thinking about a Kindle when v.2 comes out later this year, but if Apple can pull this off, I think the Kindle's niche will have a very short life span indeed.
