Well their Apple Displays do go WAY beyond 1080P; so the price should come down. But in the end a 55" 1080P TV from Apple would probably be around 5K easily.

Sadly; some people would believe it to be truly the best and buy it.

Actually. Apple doesn't believe in 1080P, so their 720P TV would still cost 5k :p:p

Unless they decide to change things up and release a 4K TV. Of course Apple TV is only 720P so I doubt that.

sounds like a guy (Munster) fishing for any sort of news that could increase his own speculation about an Apple television.

So, a guy who has been wrong in the past is persisting in being wrong.

I really see no reason for Apple to create a full TV. The TV market is huge, why would they try to compete in that?

Apple can't get networks to sign onto 99cent RENTALS, how are they going to get a full service with DVR that competes with cable?

Not going to happen.

My cable provider (and all others in Canada) scrambles all the HDTV signals to force us to buy cable boxes. They also cap my internet. Neither a web-based TV service or a TV with built-in guide would work in my area but they will probably sell them anyway.

Is there only one ISP in your area? Internet service is generally more competitive than cable, if internet based TV takes off, someone will step up and provide the proper internet service.

Humm... I can see it now, a TV with built in AppleTV, a huge drive, airplay, and it links to your iPod, iPhone and Mac automatically... I could see this and I could see it being a hit too. Hummm... if it had a built in camera then you could do Facetime on your TV too. Games... regular TV... this could be big for them if it's done right.

Not if the AppleTV is just a Sony, LG, etc with AirPlay technology built-in. Use a small device somewhere in the house as the AirPlay source and output on the TV. Want to upgrade to new HW? Keep the TV set but simply upgrade the cheap 99$ ATV to the new revision that came out and get the new features on the TV. Who will need cables on the TV in the future it you can simply AirPlay to it! Just need a power cable, that is it... cable mess no more.

I'd sure like to see a TV where whatever cables you do have plug into the base/stand of the set and disappear right over the back of the table. Pretty sure Apple would not only minimize the number of necessary cables, but would deal with residual cable clutter more elegantly.

Just because you dream of it being 'so thin' doesn't make the prospect of an even thinner TV any better in terms of functionality (look how thin Samsung LED TV's are). Neither does having a 40", 50" or 60" TV mean than Apple could sell something like this like hotcakes. In fact, not many people I know would even dream of getting a TV bigger than 32" simply because that's a good size for the living room, and anything bigger would be unnecessary.

If Apple want to convince people and give them a need to buy this, supposed, 'Apple Television' when the market is already over saturated and value enough, then they need to achieve a number of things;

1. Give the device a feature/attribute that is original. Something that the average person could benefit from that doesn't exist on other TV's.

2. Focus on making it just a TV - not a computer. Thats why we have separate machine in the house, for productivity.

3. Make the price competitive. If they're going to start off with stupid prices where you could probably pay half the sum for a bigger TV, Apple have already lost.

In short, they need to keep it focused, simple and relevant so its not only as intuitive as when you first use a Mac, but elegant enough to attract those who aren't interested techno-garb.

Probably just bs.

But if Apple got into the DVR business then my guess is it would be with a Satellite company because they are national and because Dish and DirectTV lack the ON-Demand capabilities of a cable company due to the nature of Satellite technology.

Apple All-in-one?

Ha yeah, I could see it now: The Magical and Revolutionary Apple TV! 40-inch screen with 720p resolution now only $2499. Play apps on your tv in iPad resolution and have to buy a new device every 2 years when the old one loses functionality.
Yeah, it may work with iPhones/iPads/iPod Touch, but with the ridiculous premium Apple would put on the TV itself I'd rather just buy a box. Especially because I'm betting the TV would be made by LG with AppleTV internals
I'll stick to basic internet Apps on my Vizio, it cost me way less than it's competitors and I can still watch Netflix and Hulu Plus if I wanted to. No $2499 retail needed xD
Now a Touch Screen iMac with DVR? That's a different story =O

I agree, he is almost always wrong.
I just don't get why Apple would ever make a TV. Low margins, high competition and great sets out there. If Apple wants a presence in the entertainment room, just make a killer AppleTV box. Also why all in one set up, once an ATV becomes obsolete why do I need to make my TV obsolete?
People keep their TVs for long time more than $99 devices.

This piece is a red herring and seems to try to prove the point that the Apple TV mess is going to get cleaned up soon.

Live TV? Through what source? Cable? Sat? OTA? Nonsense. Apple wants On Demand from their server farm... that's not "live TV".

I don't like the idea of people just subscribing to a smattering of narrow interests.

Channel surfing gives people some shared interests. If they have to pay a dollar to check out another channel, they won't and there will be even more isolated and ignorant people.

There will always be the choice of going off the grid and downloading only one or two shows or events, and that should be a choice. I just don't want this to be the model for society at large.

Im just thinking how hard it would be to drag a 50" Apple TV to my computer so I can sync it with iTunes every month...

Once again if and when Apple decides to bring out a real TV. It will be 1080p. That is what all TVs are out there now. 1080p with 120HZ to 240HZ if LCD and 600 HZ if plasma.

Also 3D tvs are starting to be more mainstream but will take awhile to be the standard.

Remember to push Full 1080p with HD 7.1 audio you really need bluray. Bluray is the only medium that has the full bandwidth to support real 1080p with 7.1 audio. Everything else that is streamed out there is downgraded and not real 1080p.

Real TV broadcast is 720p or 1080i.

The only way there will be competition in internet service is if Congress does the same thing to cable that they did to telephone... i.e. force them to allow other companies use of their pipe, just as DSL providers can use existing telephone wire into the house.
Until then, they have everyone by the short hairs.

He's in Canada, ISP's have to do just that. :)

It WILL happen...

If the Apple TV were made by any other company they would be embedding that baby in every TV on the planet. Apple don't believe in relinquishing that degree of control with good reason. That's when you become Microsoft and end up with shoddy excuses for products that probably had good intentions.

Apple will have at least considered this and believe you me will be looking to dominate the TV market in 2-4 years.

In the interim, An Apple TV Apple Store already means TV Apps which means TV channels, iPlayer, Lovefilm and every other streaming service on the planet!

Apple TV could also become a console if you so wish. Use your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad as a remote for suitable games or buy third party remotes...

This Apple Televison stuff reminds me the iPod Hi-Fi speakers. Failure!
Seriously why do you want an ATV embedded in your TV. The ATV goes obsolete and then your whole TV. That's smart.

For me the biggest drawback is the low margins of profit for such products. As we all know Apple likes to charge well for their products and I have hard time seeing what amazing innovation their TVs would have to grant the profit Apple will demand. ATV itself will not grant that. Specially knowing you can get the box for $99.
