I'd guess maybe $9.99, with 10.10 (or whatever the next release will be numbered/called) being free. Gradually reducing the price to nothingness.

A quick question for those who think it will be free - will users of older OS versions (e.g. 10.6/7/8) be able to upgrade to 10.9 for free, or will they need to go through the previous paid versions first?

Odds are it won't be free. Right now the Mavericks installer will let you upgrade from any of those releases. (Snow Leopard will have to be at 10.6.8 for the Mac App Store.)

I have £19.33 left on my apple account credit so hopefully that or less! :D
Best guess is it will be the same price as Mountain Lion. So for the UK it will probably be £13.99.

Do you think Mavericks will be free?

Honestly it's not much of an update, just a load of bug fixes. Not to mention it looks unfinished with skeuomorphic design mixed with iOS 7 design.

Honestly who would pay for this? Wouldn't you want to save your money wait for the next release which would probably be more finished?

If you'd actually take a look at the list of features...

I would, and gladly even. And I will. Worth every penny.

Who would pay $20 for bug fixes that should of been made in mountain lion?

What a silly question. You might as well ask: Who would pay $20 for bug fixes that should have been made in Cheetah? Or who would pay for any new features, they should have been there since 1984?

If you want to pay $20 for dual monitor support that should've been fixed in ML then be my guest. And those "under the hood" advancements aren't worth the money either.

If you don't think it's worth it, don't upgrade. What those fixes are worth to any given person is different. The same with the new and fixed features.

No, I think the dual monitor support should have been fixed by System 7. But it wasn't. Bummer.

Glad you pointed out what fools we are to believe we actually need the features we use, though. Thank you for that insight. But being the fool I am, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet, tighten the belt, and fork out a whopping $20 of my hard earned money for a faster, more efficient and more stable OS X with features I certainly think I need and use, but really don't as you so wisely pointed out. Boy, what a rip-off this is.

I can't see why Apple should've already announced the up to date program. It's not that it's the second time it happens.. once they announce Mavericks' release date, they say "And customers who bought any Mac up to 60 days prior to the release date are entitled to have the OS for free". Why shouldn't this happen? Why couldn't it?

Exactly. In the past, it was the announcement that included the launch date that they announced the "free for anyone who bought a new Mac in the previous <x> days" offer as well.

So if the announcement on Tuesday is "Mavericks launches Friday Oct 25th", then it will also likely include as a footnote "and anyone who bought a Mac after August 26th will get it free."

$19.99.

In comparison to Lion and Mountain Lion, Mavericks definitely has fewer user features.

But like Snow Leopard, it brings some important architectural benefits (faster performance, lower memory usage, long battery life).

$19.99 represents a historical bargain for commercial operating system. And one must consider that not everyone is upgrading form Mountain Lion.

And apart from a few thousand fanboys who will give a toss?

Do you really think impressing a few thousand people with a meaningless piece of trivia is more important to Apple than millions of dollars in revenue?

Told you so.

It's free. Just like I suspected. Now where are all those people that said the reasoning for it being free was stupid? :p

WOw.. I didnt download the previous OS on my laptop because I was being cheap... and the latest OS is free...

Can someone tell me if I need the previous OS in order to take advantage of the new OS? and can someone tell me how well it will run on my 2010 macbook pro?
Thanks.

Doesn't matter if you already run Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion.. you can get Mavericks.
