Ill be shopping for a car soon for my oldest teenager. I wonder if Yugo ever made a diesel? Maybe an old Trabant would work. Then again, he needs sheet metal between him and the world so an old Caprice V6 with one of the plug cables pulled or maybe a sock stuffed into one of the carb barrels should fit the bill. BMW anything for a teenager is OTT, IMO.

^^^^^^^^

Get a newer car (with excellent crash ratings). The safety of cars has been improving quite a bit. Breaks are better, airbags systems are better, generally crash zones are designed better, traction control, etc.

At least the kid from the story didn't kill anyone. It sound like he learned his lesson (though you never know--some kids are just good at sounding contrite).

I think the following quote fits the situation...

"This is why teenagers are not legally allowed to drink. When you're already this weapons-grade-stupid, you can't afford any more mental impairment because you might forget to breath." -- soundguy

BMWs are fun cars to drive. After owning many many Hondas, I was lucky enough to be in a posiotn to buy a new 3 Series. These cars can be leathal in a teens hand. I know I had many close calls as a reckless teen. I managed to pull two 360s in traffic and luckily didnt do damge to the car or injury to occupants. I also cut my teeth, so to speak, on less powerful Hondas and learned to drive well with these knockers. I can tell you that the BMW is a very responsive and powerful car and I only have the e46. You get used to playng in traffic wiht ease. The car firmly plants the devil on your shoulders. It seems to WANT to go fast and out maneuver. Those who own one know exactly what Im talking about.

I too recall the story of the airport/runway M5. Very sad indeed. Especially as both a BMW driver and pilot.

Trabants and Wartburgs were quite terrible, actually. They both used a 2-stroke engine and boy did they ever stink. I remember catching a pretty massive headache while in Budapest a number of years ago, which at the time was seemingly inundated with those vehicles. At least Wartburg used a real sheet metal body.

How about a Golf or Jetta diesel for your son?

I like my 2007 Saturn Aura XR. With Saturn's demise, you can probably get a pretty decent used one for a good price.

Saturns are junk. Steer clear of this vehicle.

Have you owned the Aura? That is my car and I love it. It is almost 4 years old now and it has hold up pretty well. The most troublesome area of the car has been the tires( more Goodyears fault).

If not Saturn, how about the 2008 or newer Chevy Malibu's?

Get him a little KIA Rio, but not Racing Red. ;)

Good crash protection, and cheap to operate.

And definitely not a bimbo magnet, but smart chicks is what you prefer, right?

I was joking about the Trabant. ;) I think they are collectors' items now. In fact, the Caprice probably is as well. My point being that cars for teenage drivers should not be ones that help them get into trouble and I should know because I had a muscle-car as a teenager and was in endless trouble! I'll probably find a Corolla or Rio or Aveo that's a few years old. No ex-Saturn dealers within 100 miles of me, although I think they are decent value for what they are.

Apart from the cost of the car and the need for less than Formula 1 acceleration, there is also the insurance and upkeep to think of. I guess, however, that if the parent was willing to spend a 100K on the car, 5 or 10K a year on insurance and maintenance is not a big deal.

There should be a law stating that kids cannot have a luxury car for their first car unless they pay for it themselves. I can understand treating him to something as a reward for his hard work like a vacation or a new computer, but a BMW( especially a M5)?

Forget the nanny state. Just karma coming back to parents whom buy expensive cars for their kids.

Parents have judgement. They should have known that their child was not mature enough to have such a car. They should have given him a Civic, not a M5. Heck, I'm one year younger than him, but I know I wouldn't do such dangerous things with this car, if I were to have one.

Aren't you just a shining example for your kid.... ;)

Don't know if I would buy my kids M5s or the likes, but certainly not a little shitbug car. I'd probably be something along the lines of a Passat, Volvo S40, Audi A4 or BMW 3 series. Yes, the have a bit more power but they are also safer than most little shitbug riceburners when it comes to a car crash.
And most certainly I would buy new. After all the trouble I had with so called "certified" pre-owned cars I'd never in my life buy a used car ever again. I'd rather walk.
Cheers,

Ahmed

A Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, etc is as safe as those premium/luxury cars.

No kid deserves a luxury car unless they pay for it themselves.

My daughter can get any car she wants... just as soon as she gets a job and pays for it herself. Mind you, she's only 5 right now. If she starts saving now though she'll be on her way!

Kids who learn to work for their lifestyle definitely do better later in life and make better providers.

I'm a BMW driver and fan of the brand, but it's an undeniable fact that Hondas and Toyotas, Peugeots etc are all as safe as driving a BMW. American cars too I'm sure, I just don't know their actual safety ratings as I live in the UK.

I regularly sup the BMW koolaid, daily in fact over several forums - but there's no hope in hell I'd give my kid a 3 series for his first car.

All BMWs are luxury cars as well as being sports sedans/coupes/roadsters. Given their price and equipment levels they could hardly be called anything else, no?

Which brings me on to the parents' apparent idiocy - Surely when it came time to buy the car it would have been obvious, given the cost, that this was no ordinary sedan? Or they could have Googled "BMW M5"?

I think the parents should take a lot of blame for handing over a $100k, 10 cylinder, 200mph car to a child. And then pleading ignorance, which is never an excuse.

More money than common sense...

That is the problem with the uber rich... let's make the kid happy....

I graduated from HS in '76 - and my first car was a '72 Dodge Colt with a 1200CC engine....

Why would I buy my kid a car that I wouldn't buy for myself? I wouldn't buy a US brand crap in a million years. If you had said a Lexus or an Acura we could have had a conversation... but then I would have objected that they all had their bouts of quality issues recently... so they are out. And the Korean's I just don't trust their quality and I have driven a couple of them as rentals and wasn't impressed.
Cheers,

Ahmed

Practically about everyone has had bouts with quality issues in recent years. That is including the Germans. BMW is having trouble with the high pressure fuel pump on their Twin Turbo I6. They also had trouble with their normal I6 engines as well with the valves. VW has had electronic issues biting them( same goes for Audi) and Mercedes has had a stay in the crappy product hotel as well( why they bought Chrysler to shore up Mercedes).

Personally, I never had any major problems with our GM products. But, my point in mentioning the Fusion and Malibu was mostly saying the mainstream vehicles are no less safer then the German luxury brands.

But, if you're so against GM and Ford products and want to go import, then get your kid a Subaru or Honda. No kid deserves a luxury car unless they pay for it with their own hard earned cash.

You know, I know this sounds a bit oldschool, but how about buying kids used cars these days? I mean that's what I got, a nice, cheap, POS, but if anything it should teach humility for those overly concerned with status and peer standing. Additionally, a nice used car could be used to teach said kids about repairs and maintenance, which is a skill set that will serve them well for some time. Granted, they can't use the computer diagnostics program that the dealers have, but if they're using a used car it won't have one :)

Amen there :)

You just have to look for my post about my 1st car a Dodge Colt....
