lol, I do have pics and vids but not endlessly.
I say that as in our family 2 kids their father or mother wasn't into photos/video and they have hardly anything and the other 2 have 20 x 1 hour dvd's of family now in iCloud lol
This was when you had to have a camera and video camera.

As a first time grandfather I am glad my son is into it as they live 21hr flights away.
Each to their own though.

Come on now. People have been taking photos of their kids with smartphones for years, with cameras much worse than the Air’s, and the photos are just fine. To me, it sounds like you should focus more on the moments with your kids instead of fiddling with your phone. I’m sure they’re already tired of those photo sessions where dad spends minutes adjusting settings on his “pro” phone. Dad’s just got a new toy.
guess you don't have children?

You win for the single most desperate defense of an Apple product I've ever seen on the internet.

"Why are you even taking pictures of your kids?" is a great new "you're holding it wrong".

For me, I've been taking some back and forth pictures with my Air and my 15PM, and when it comes to the main cameras I keep thinking one is better but then I'll find another photo where the other one comes on top. I think a lot of it was just luck of the draw with the angle and lighting. But of course the 15PM has way more flexibility.

The decision this year is not between the Pro and Air but between the Air and keeping my 15PM. Pretty sure I can live with the limitations of the Air though - it's so much nicer to the point that I really can't see myself going back. Every time I pick up the 15PM I realise I'm done with the era of thick, heavy phones.

For me I almost never take pictures and I actually hated the 3 different cameras because on my iPhone 14 it would regularly change the lens without asking me while taking a photo, I found the single lens is not only great but better in the aspect of "it just works"
And this is a great real-life response, much appreciated.

As a mini fan, the Air is going in the wrong direction (size wise) despite the premium look and feel, svelte profile, and reduced weight. Despite the brickish nature of my 15 Pro (and won't consider another Pro model until I see what Apple unveils for the 20th Anniversary), the 6.1" screen and 187g weight now makes it the "smallest" Pro phone. I bought a new case, screen protector, changed the wallpaper, and tinted the icons, and it's like a new phone all over again. ;)

Good news: the iPhone Air camera isn’t an issue anymore!

Bad news: my EDC has gotten slightly heavier and bulkier than my Pro Max🤣

In case anybody else is on the fence like me, I figured this might be helpful.

TL;DR: it's the cameras.

Upgrading from the 16 Pro Min. I couldn't decide between the Air (black) and the 17 Pro (Blue) and ended up ordering both of them to compare. I set them both up, restoring from backup without porting my number. (Yes, I realize this is pretty deranged fanboy behavior in these latter days of Apple, but that's where my head was at.)

I spent way too much time switching back and forth over the weekend, and it was a REALLY REALLY tough call. You all know the thought process: form factor of the Air + slightly larger screen is so nice. But oh, the battery/cameras/monospeaker/random-assortment-of-other-things-that-probably-don't-matter. Blue vs black. Scratchgate. Etc.

Ultimately, it came down to the cameras for me. How big is the difference in practice?

To assess, I took both phones to the park with my kids on Sunday, one in each front pocket, and took a bunch of photos and videos as they ran around.

Here's the verdict from a not professional photographer, not tech influencer, etc. Just a dad who wants the best photos of his kids.
  • Main cameras are basically equivalent when the subject is stable and you’ve got focus locked in. However, the lack of lidar on the Air seems to result in slower focus pulling and more quick/impromptu shots ended up out of focus. E.g., running children. I suspect this would actually matter over the long haul.
  • Apart from that, the lack of cinematic video and telephoto (which—the new 4x is a much better camera than the old 16 pro 5x, and took some of the best portraits of the day) were big. I just found I had a lot more flexibility to get good shots at varying distances with the Pro. And consequently, I found myself reaching for it much more often than the Air.
I looked at everything on a Studio Display later. Overall, the set from the Pro came out significantly better. Totally unscientific, but that was my experience. Fewer blurry shots, some great portraits and action shots from the 4x/8x, and the cinematic videos were standout.

So I say, that’s the dealbreaker for me!

And yeah, the Pro body feels really nice in the hand, it’s maybe slightly snappier for general use than the Air because the CPUs aren’t throttled (could be my imagination). Overall, it’s not worse enough in terms of form factor to make me give up the photography benefits.

All that being said, if photography isn't a big concern, I'd say the Air is a no brainer. That thing is so sweet.
yes same findings here, over the weekend - had a hard time getting good detail from 10 ft. away with the air, my dogs move too fast i guess! ha!

You know, you really should just spend time, in the moment, with your dogs and not take photos as their lives move by so fast.

:) Joking. I’m so glad I have photos of my (now departed) dogs.

Had a chance today to handle all three iPhones 17’s and the Air.

Air is slim enough that like iPhone 6 series with similar design language I felt it place pressure where the titanium sides meet my hands. The physics and biology is that less surface area on the phone is concentrating on a small area on my hand making it uncomfortable. Plus unlike the 6.3” display my thumb has to really stretch but some are used to this from PM screen.

iPhone 17 P/PM, why is the flash located where one’s finger/s would rest when taking a photo in landscape view this is not a good design choice. Is there a reason why Apple moved the flash and LiDAR all the way to the other side, it seems sloppy and an ergonomic issue. Maybe I am “holding it wrong”.

iPhone 17, seems best as it’s light enough and is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. The rest of the lineup just have these plateaus that are comically large.

Making the Air a wedge with a curve would permit it to sit in the hand nicely and not need in your face plateaus. It’s like Apple’s design team took a vacation or just gave up.

This has been my decision as well. I finally “doubled down” on getting my iPhone set up as a portable photography toolset with the 15 Pro and I hated pretty much every minute of it. I now have my much-lusted-after D850 and a Zf to play with. The 15 Pro will last until it doesn’t accept the newest iOS version or becomes janky and then it will be replaced with the smallest and lightest (presently incompatible desires) iPhone. Assuming a similar lineup as presently, that means an Air or an e…

Also considering just getting a slimmer case for my 16 Pro, as it feels better naked and there isn’t much depth difference against the Air without a case

This setup will outlive even iPhone 26, and in terms of price, not too far🙂

Sony quality and processing is a huuuge plus, iPhones just can’t. Checked 17 Pro camera quality and honestly, it is the same reason I haven’t gotten 16 Pro or 15 Pro: weird processing and way too digital look.

I only wish Sony made new RX100 VIII as a “pocketable” option

Some Apple sycophants are X are really excusing the lack of features on the iPhone Air. It costs $999. It lacks a proper speaker, has bad battery life, and the camera is inferior. Recall that just a year ago, $999 got you a superior iPhone Pro.
Air is truly iPhone 16e’s anorexic brother.

They should have at least allowed ProRAW capture on this phone, ProRES RAW and other Pro features. It is like if someone got iPad Air or MacBook Air and Final Cut Pro said with a big disclaimer “Pro features are disabled for this device”.

Well, at least it has 12GB ram, it is a big plus. Even most current iPads are all 8GB, and they have larger displays and more capabilities for pro work

Can you elaborate on this, what was the problem with the phone selecting a lens?
Ok I go to take a picture, the preview looks beautiful and crystal clear, I press the camera button suddenly apple decides just kidding lets use one of the other lenses such as one my finger was on, or some blurry disgusting mess. Or as I am previewing a shot I feel like I am getting a seizure because it will randomly change and shift lenses without asking me.

Half of my photos on my iPhone 14 pro max are duplicates due to this issue. And when I looked online to complain about this it was apparently a known issue. I hated my 14 pro max camera so much I would use my iPad half the time for camera purposes.
