The devices are used for refurbished units, repair replacements, spare parts etc. They don’t throw away thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. They get resused.
Apple includes Apple Care repair and replacements in its environmental statistics, and even the environmental cost of taking materials to be recycled. So even if they were just throwing them away, they’d be included.
