I have the Orange 17 Pro and thought I’d like the color more than I actually do, so was seriously considering going to the Apple Store this evening to trade it in for the Air. But after reading your post, I’ve changed my mind. Thank you!
Or trade it for a pro color that you like?

It’s fundamentally the camera, and the screen being too big. It’s not uncomfortably big but it is basically an always two-hands phone for me, and I find the thinness makes it harder to operate with one hand. That’s a shame, because it’s wonderful to hold and type on and use two handed.
It's fascinating to read comments about this phone because one thing that's been nagging at me a bit is that the phone is smaller than my 16 Plus! Lol. But tbh now when I pick up my Plus it feels huge. I'm evaluating the camera and battery life but tbh I feel like I'm ready for a smaller phone but I don't want to go down even further to the regular 17 or Pro. (Of course I'm aware I'm being herded a bit, since there's such a big size jump between the regular 17 and Pro and the Pro Max.)

I saw someone comment about how they're using the phone without a case and tbh I took mine off earlier as well - it just feels like a pity to use the phone with one tbh! And the drop test I saw makes me more confident in it, though of course I have a screen protector on.

would the heavier pro not be harder on your hands with transits ?
I’ve discovered with phones that it’s usually less the weight differences and more about larger width. It’s the reason I chose to never get another Pro Max after I bought an 11 PM. But, in the case of the Air, there’s only a small bit more width, so it is probably that along with the squared off edges that I find uncomfortable. As i think on it, I imagine that if I put a case on it, softening the edges, it might be fine since it isn’t that much wider. It’s probably the rounder edges of the Pro that I find more comfortable.

I’m the opposite, never used a screen protector with an iPhone but always have a case. Still undecided about getting a thin case for the Air

Ultimately some people will prefer fashion and some people utility but its ok for both groups to co-exist.
Oh please that couldn't be further from the truth. The air is a very capable phone with a pro chip and pro level ram and display. It's not a "fashion" phone. Get out of here with that narrative..... and I'm someone who is sticking with the pro max but certainly not looking down my nose at the air.

I didn't quite understand the angry responses. I was only pointing out that the Air is more stylish than the Pro, which it is. I didn't say it was crap! Simultaneously the Pro does have more utility, having extra cameras, LiDAR, Thunderbolt etc. Its also not crap!

This year Apple wasn't tied up trying to make the Pro devices both things. It could let loose its design dogs on the Air whilst being able to turn the Pro model into the tank it should always have been. Increasing the range gave people more choice.

I still have not tried the Air yet, but I am considering it. I do worry about the camera and its size, even though I am not much of a photographer. If I end up not buying it, I'll probably stick with the 15 Pro. I am not sure it's worth the upgrade to go to the 17 Pro.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little ridiculous to buy two phones knowing you’re going to return one? Seems wasteful as you know they can’t sell that used phone as new again.

This type of behavior is what can cause companies to stop offering a generous return policy.

I don't mind folks buying and trying, ideally with the intent to hopefully keep a device assuming it works for them.

However, I agree with you, I don't think it's in the spirit of the return policies to knowingly buy multiple devices flat out planning to return one of them, from the outset.

I guess it's a small nitpick, but it feels like it's taking advantage of a generous return policy in a way that, as I mentioned above, isn't really in a good faith spirit of why they have the policy.

I have 17 pro and air and I’ve been so torn on what to keep , right now I’m ending towards the pro and getting the air 2

I currently have the 15 pro max , I’ve had nothing but overheating issues and constant call drop outs so i have to upgrade , this last year with it has been annoying

Wow. At any point does this give you pause about rewarding them with another purchase?

A 15 Pro Max is just barely 2 years old, and was the top of the line model.

That shouldn't be how the experience is at this point in time.

I’m in the eco system i guess and i don’t really want android even tho its been many years since i had an android.

Regarding the 15 pro max , i must have got a lemon idk, i even changed provider thinking it was that but still issues continued.

I know for sure its been the phone as with testing the 17 pro and Air as I’ve not had 1 single call drop

Nope. I am trying both the Air and the Pro. Apple even suggested to do so. Nothing generous about a 14 day return policy either and for the price of these phones I expect to be able to try both. I spend so much money on Apple products every year, I expect it.

Where did Apple suggest you buy two phones and try them both out and return the one you don’t want? Are you sure they weren’t referring to trying them out in a store?

Width is an under discussed aspect of what can make these devices hard to hold.

True.

I think I’m gonna have to return the Air for the regular 17. I find the narrower 15 Pro (146.6 x 70.6 x 8.3 mm 187g) more comfortable than the Air. I reckon the 17 (149.6 x 71.5 x 8 mm 177g) would feel more or less the same as the 15 Pro.

Also, for some reason, the Air gives me even greater eye discomfort than the 17 Pro (and most other OLED iPhones I’ve tried for that matter). I even tried switching PWM settings and the discomfort from the Air was pretty much immediate. With the other OLED iPhones, I can use them for 10-20 minutes at a time before they start bothering me.

At the store. They always suggest that and say you have 14 days. They have always been that way, as have great customer service. Time to move on now though, as this thread is about the Pro/Air. 🙂

Apple support also told me something similar. Told me if I simply prefer the pro to just return my air and switch it out. Their business model is built to anticipate the returns. It’s why I love Apple. No one should be forced to pay the amounts these devices are if they don’t love them. Apple just uses these to replace Apple care claims anyways. Win win for everyone.

I agree with you that no one should have to buy a $1,000 phone and have to keep it no matter what if they don’t like it.

But that’s a different conversation from knowingly buying two phones at the same time, using them for days, and then returning the one you don’t want.

I bought an iPhone Air fully expecting to keep it, but after using it for a weekend I knew it wasn’t the phone for me, so I returned it and got a regular 17 yesterday. The difference is I bought the first phone in good faith thinking I would keep it, but then I was able to correct my mistake. It’s the first time I’ve ever returned an iPhone, and I’ve bought many over the years.

I would bet a large amount of money Apple as a company would not want every customer doing this. You might find a random employee who says this to you, but there is no way the company would fully endorse this behavior, as it’s wasteful and renders phones “used” just because someone wanted to try them out.

This is absolutely the type of behavior that causes companies to crack down and make return policies more restrictive and unfair to customers.

For lesser companies, yes, but I return to the fact that they plan for these in their business model. Their whole infrastructure has plans for the returned items and they are needed to fulfill Apple care. If Apple were to “crack down” they would have already done it as it’s been this way for forever. I understand your fears, but seems like we’re grasping at straws for something we only think could happen when all the evidence is to the contrary.

Edit: and if they were going to crack down it would be to individual users abusing the system. They don’t have to generalize a new policy. They just ensure the policy allows them to deny under certain circumstances that target individuals.
