This is the reason I never eat or drink near a laptop. Even if it does come back alive the damage is done. Liquids are working with the metals on circuit board to corrode connections. And even a small spill trips the liquid damage indicator dots that Apple puts all over the inside.

Too bad Apple is not like Lenovo thinkpads. They seal they key shafts and put the keyboard on a drain tray that routes liquids to drains in the bottom of the system. I have seen people dump a large coffee on them and continue working. Downside is they are a bit bulky.

THIS ^ Last year I spilled an entire mug of coffee into my P580 keyboard. It immediately got all kinds of graphic glitches before I could even shut it off. Turned it over, let everything drain and dry. Turned it back on and it worked...kind of. Still glitchy and many keys didn't work. Replaced the keyboard with an OEM ordered from Amazon ($12) and back in business, minus the track pad.

Bonus is I still get the french vanilla smell when it heats up!

American Express has accidental coverage within 45 days or 90 days if purchased with American Express card.

Apple diagnosed and said it was pretty much broken beyond repair!

I bought the 15” MBP with touch bar for my son in JUN2017 and was messing around with his so I bought the same for myself in AUG2017. Today I spilt a 20 ounce cup of coffee on my MBP, of which about half unfortunately went inside. I lost all function of the keyboard, intermittent use of the track pad and the CPU cooling fan stays on almost constant.

Luckily I purchased the AppleCare plus on both which covers spill damages! I first looked up if it was covered by my 1 year warranty, which it wasn’t and I just about had a heart attack being I paid $3200 for it. I bought it from Best Buy and I know the salesman told me I was covered for ANYTHING. I called them up and they told me to call Apple. Long story short, they are going to overnight a box and I had to pay $99. The girl on the phone said I will get an email/phone call with the actual cost. I told her I read on the AppleCare site that accidental liquid damage cost $299 or less as a deductible? She told me it should only cost $299 but other things may be wrong? IDK, the good thing is the whole process should only take 7 days, quoting her. I will update this post when all is said and done.

The $299 is correct (plus sales tax) but there should be no other charges even if they find something else wrong with it.

From Apple:
Coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax

Chances are you fried the Key Board.
The mother board is probably still good just won't power on if the Key Board is bad unless the 2016 works differently.
To bad Apple said it is a total loss.

Eeek!

Maybe let it dry out and give it some time? Sorry for the misfortune. Do you by chance have Apple Care? Not that they cover it but Apple might be a little more understanding and help out if you do potentially.

Best of luck

Hi,
My sons were Skyping with their sister in Europe, and she wanted to see a water purifying device, which is about 2 feet tall. During the demonstration, they spilled a significant amount of water on my MacBookPro 17" and it died. I took it to an Apple certified technician, who told me that it was beyond repair. So I let it sit for a few weeks and then I took it to London Drugs Computer technician, who apparently took the battery out and put it back in and my beloved MacBook is working. The only problem is that I cannot use the letter "p".
So do not give up, I am sure there are solutions to your problem.
If anyone knows how to fix one key on the keyboard, I would appreciate their input.

Happy New Year to everybody!

Etela
When my iMac keyboard got wet, it behaved erratically for a very long time - weeks. Exactly as you describe - some keys not working. Until it eventually dried out in the sun, and was back to normal.

Thank you very much Raqball for responding! The thing I’m worried about is the last sentence of the first footnote:

If your Mac has catastrophic damage from an accident or is inoperable after unauthorized modifications, you will need to buy a replacement.”

I understand the second clause, but the first has me stumped?! I have been looking online for quite a while. The rep on the phone kinda eluded to “If they find anything else wrong”. I’m wondering if by catastrophic they have to replaced the whole thing? I would think it should still be only $299+tax like you said. I saw a review on CNET about AppleCare which they said if you accidentally drop it in the pool, your covered? Then I saw something on the Apple website saying if it is partially submerged in a liquid it’s not covered. I have to just let it be what it will be, cause it’s making my brain hurt. :( No matter what happens I thank you for your reply and I will update this site with the outcome.

So it seems like the home insurance will cover it (obviously i have to pay the relatively small excess fee though)

I suspect everything is damaged so assume Apple will suggest a replacement. problem is mine is a 16gb ram config so will probably have to wait a few weeks to get it back! life lesson i guess!

Yes - you may be good to go with home insurance. What credit card did you make the purchase with?

And as a rule of thumb, I keep drinks behind the screen lid so that if for some reason they fall, they can't fall on to the keyboard.

They're probably referring to something like it being run over by a car, or dropped and smashed into pieces etc.... Don't worry or stress about it.

Ah, yeah I see what your saying smallcoffee, thank you for responding to me. That makes a lot of sense. Makes me feel better...it’s just all the legal terms that they have to put in because people will sue over anything, it just makes it confusing for the rest of us. Thank you again!

And Poki, that was pretty witty and funny!

Thanks guys.

** I will definitely update my post with the outcome, right now they are FedEx’ing me a special box to send the computer to Apple in.

We have an "I spilled drink on my Macbook" epidemic, in the US.

Add me to that list. I toasted my 2016 13" tbMBP due to an unfortunate timing mishap with a full cup of coffee and my cat, who likes to jump on my desk and snuggle. :( My machine would not even boot. No fans, no video output, just nothing. I only bought the standard AppleCare, which doesn't cover liquid damage.

$2,400 later, I am now the proud owner of a 2017 13" tbMBP. While my wallet is lighter, I must say I am much happier. The 2017 keyboard is an improvement over the 2016 model, and Bluetooth works much, much better. My Logitech Master MX would frequently disconnect on my 2016 model, forcing a reboot and in some cases an unpair/re-pair process. Going on two months using the 2017 machine and not one disconnect of the mouse. Both machines were/are on High Sierra. And the 2017 model just "feels" more stable than my 2016 unit. Subjective, I know...but it just feels better.

Now I need to find out if I can still purchase the AppleCare Plus with accidental damage coverage. :)

No, it's not subjective. The 2017 IS better. My 2014 15" specked out broke, Apple took 3 months to tell me they couldn't fix it cause they could get the logic boards to connect somehow, so I got the 2017 2TB 3.1 specked out. I had ysed the 2016 for a while and wanted my 2014 back. So at first I was bumbed out, but this machine is beautiful.

When I get a drink and am on my mac, I look at the drink with Clint Eastwood eyes and see it as a virus that will infect my mac with death, and keep it away. 2 feet between the cup and computer works wonders. You guys should try it.

You story would have been better if it had read:

"My sons were Sky ing with their sister in Euro e, and she wanted to see a water urifying device,..."

I have had two macbooks drained in water and hot chocolate, all thanks to my then 2yr old and 4yr old. Both times, apple "genius" said, its beyond repair just buy a new one instead and in both times, I just left them unused for approx a month thinking there was no point yet when I turned them on - boooyah! I did have to change the battery for the hot chocolate one, and the keys got alil stickty. In anycase, OP - do not fear, keep it with you, these things need time to dry out completely.

But don't count on that: I spilled literally a couple of cc's of water on my previous 15" MBP and a large chunk of the keyboard never recovered. You may be lucky, or you may not.

(And yes, of course this happened just when an update was overdue, so I hung on for months, carrying an external keyboard with me everywhere, because I was not going to pay for a replacement just for a new model to be announced the following week...).

Hopefully the AppleCare Plus will deal with it and you won't need to worry about any of this.

The biggest thing is once corrosion is it is very insidious, and can take weeks or months to do real damage. System board use techniques like surface mounting that make this especially bad because water can get in between the components and the board. And then sit there eating away at traces and connections for months or years. Louis Rossmann has some videos on YouTube showing what he finds when he repairs these systems. Watch a few of those and you will never again eat or drink anywhere near a laptop!

Catastrophic damage is talking about running over your laptop with a vehicle, or tossing it off the top of a building or feeding it through a wood chipper. This is also known as rendering your device "beyond economical repair" (BER). AC+ is for klutzy accidents, like cracking your screen, or trying to recharge your laptop's batteries with coffee...

There's a guy on Youtube, named Loui Rosemen or something like that. He shows how coroded the parts get, if you jist leave then alone and let em dry. He needs to actually clean it up. As a metter of fact, OP, is could be cheaper for you to send it in to Loui. He uses electronic microscoped and everything and doesn't charge what Apple would. Look for him on YouTube and his company page is in the description.

Caution: If he happens to be working on yours while doing a video, there's a chance he'll make fun of you.
