Everyone is making fun of the original poster but if you search the web you will find about 5 or 6 other cases of the same exact issue all from different people. Clearly Apple's choice of 6000 series aluminum was a poor design decision. 6000 series aluminum is very soft. Hence "scuffgate" and now, apparently "bendgate". 7000 series (used for bike frames and aircraft parts) would have been a better material although I'm not sure if it can be anodized.

In the photos from 2 different threads I've seen on this they both appear to be white iphones, wonder if it was something in the production line?

It either happened while pocketed and doing yoga; or in the back pocket and he cut one. Choose and then it's case closed.

All metals and aluminums expand and extract very well could be a defect in the material I'm sure there will be more to come

I'd love to know when the OP was going to Apple. It's been a day already ... I would have been there and back by now.

hi all,
Just finished work and will be heading to apple store now- in the meantime look at this post from the thread "bent iphone 5" started oct 1 this forum. (has pic with identical mark at identical spot)

Yeah thanks I'm not not tubby, pretty skinny. When it happened I was wearing loose fitting shorts. The only thing I can think of is the phone was forced against my leg within the confines of the pocket when sitting down but I would think that much force would be noticed by myself. The picture doesn't look too bad, I have tried to bend it back as much as I could but notice the stress fracture above the volume button.
So if this can happen without a drop, or other careless use, I guess I'll wait to replace it until I find a bullet proof and thin case. Maybe I'll get a belt clip, ha. Surprised I'm the only one

Wow, the fanboys are going a little crazy.

You guys have heard of batteries exploding spontaneously in devices right? IIRC, some Apple devices had this problem.

See the below video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFwn0MJTw6A

Something like this would easily cause the case to bend and separate.

So is the battery right where it shows signs of stress? It's not fanboy, I said its likely it happened. Calm down.

6000 series in a proper temper is actually tougher than many other AL alloys and can take a full level III anodize. The materials are fine. It's just that Apple didn't choose to temper it properly or apply a tougher anodic coating.

I'm still not convinced that the OP didn't put a ton of stress omit. In fact I'm convinced he did. With that I can confirm that the screen can in fact separate from the unibody, it happens to me today. I took my case off to clean off a hair and noticed the screen was a good amount further 'out' compared to the top right and bottom two corners. I literally had to push it back in. I think this is going to become a widespread problem. There was no undue stress on my phone. It's always in my pocket like every other iPhone. I'm going down tomorrow to get AppleCare+. I'm just glad I saw it before my month is up.

I vote mithril so the orcs can't destroy my iPhone.

I vote Stellite or Inconel so when I break one I can machine the remains into a miniature M60 or F1 rocket engine.
:D

...

Actually, an Inconel iPhone would be astonishingly awesome now that I think about it. Spectacularly expensive too, but I'll just ignore that minor drawback in my little gadget fantasy here...

I've just returned from the apple store and have spent a fair bit of effort documenting the event in some detail, including three photos, because, as a long time mac person I know how hungry the apple-philes on this forum are for detail. However I first want you to promise to be nicer to me and to others who might join the forums for the first time when they come across a problem.

Very noble of you to try, but leopards can't change their spots. My advice, just leave and don't share what happened. I hope the problem was resolved to your satisfaction.

and lol you have a wise son there. :)

I certainly hope they gave you a new phone. Unless they can be 100% certain that you damaged it yourself, they should replace it. From the posts I've seen here over the years, they have replaced phones for people who later admitted to being deceitful, and getting replacements for very stupid reasons.

Here's what happened at the Apple store:Tell story to first nice, competent genius, who immediately gets lead genius to join us. He listens, looks and says they will take it to the back to pop the front off to have a look. I ask if I can join him? No. I ask if he can bring it back out after it’s apart? No. I explain I want to take a picture. No. OK I say.

10-15 minutes later the first genius returns, with the phone (in the same bent state) to say that they’ve had a chance to look at it and they can’t find a reason for it.

Me: whats underneath that poke mark?

“The battery is underneath there. But it doesn’t show any signs of expansion at all. Its not a result of the battery expanding. We’re looking into it. Its not something we’ve seen before. We are partnering with our management team as well. That gentleman that came up and was helping us as well – he’s our lead genius so we’ve got a few of us on it.”

Lead Genius comes back and joins us-
“So we’ve taken a look – I don’t see internally any sign of anything short of seeing obviously that the metal band is bent. My conclusion would be that there was some force applied to it to bend the band. For example I don’t see any expanded internal components that would suggest anything other than that. I think the best course of action, the most timely course of action would be to proceed with your applecare+ .”

I replied I would be willing to do that but if it turns out in the future to be a more recognized problem that you would refund me that $49 and that it wouldn’t use up one of my two replacements.
‘This is the only case I’ve seen like this. The other thing we definitely can do, whenever we have something new like this, is to pass it up to our other departments that look at this sort of thing. …we like to pass it up to the other teams, when we’re dealing with new products and issues like this, when we pass it up up the line, – sometimes the answer we get back is ok cover this, I don’t know that that would be the answer in this case but obviously there would be a wait for that.”
I replied that no, I needed to replace it now.
“Well we will pass it up, and if they tell us that they would have replaced it we can take whatever actions we need to take to go with that. And I don’t want to set expectations that that’s what will happen”.

We left it at they would email me directly in 3-5 days with a response.

Lead genius leaves and first genius goes to get replacement phone leaving me alone with bent phone. Knowing the insatiable appetite of those on this forum I tried to get a pic of the insides by pulling back on the front plate as much as I could without causing damage. I get a couple of shots as best I can (with my wife’s iphone5) and in the process get strange blue striped screen of death and phone becomes non-responsive. (it had been working normally up to now.)

I’ll be sure to post when I hear back from apple again.

It seems to me they were very polite to you.

How did they feel about your killing the phone by prying on it?

Didn't miss a beat. They didn't necessarily know I had pried it because they weren't there - I didn't volunteer and they didn't ask. She did say she couldn't wipe the phone though. I said there were t any secrets on it and I didn't think there engineers would go pokin around anyway.
