Do you root against any teams?

I am also NOT a 'root against' person ... I honestly try to live the mantra that 'you don't build yourself up by tearing others down'. :) Also - it is just a game.

I agree with you in principle, but in practice I root against:

1. Dallas
2. NY Giants

When I say I lived in Buffalo for many years you'll understand why.

At the college level, it pleases me when Notre Dame and USC lose.

And, txa1265, at what race did you pick up that hardware? I used to run a race timing business out of Buffalo, and my coverage area went out to Utica.

I gotta admit, this thread is a lot of fun. It's nice to see so many others who are not crazy about the cowgirls.

@Scepticalscribe, the avatar that has you confused is for The Ohio State University. OSU is one of the best schools around, with an amazing med school. (Ok, so I'm a little biased towards OSU.) Their traditional rival is Michigan. If you go any further north than Michigan you find yourself in Canada. Once there you start getting into hockey rivals. ;)

GO BUCKS!!

I root against the Colorado Avalanche (NHL). It goes back to the huge rivalry between them and my favorite team, the Detroit Red Wings. The late 90s was a great time to be a Red Wings fan!

Thanks for taking the time to provide this thoughtful explanation, @AlliFlowers - much appreciated to have this put in context.

Should I find myself in the company of people who care about sports and who are actively watching the match in my presence, I typically root for the opposite team.

I don't care about sports, but I do it for the sake of (friendly) antagonism.

Also, I know better than to do this re football in Europe.

As a UCLA alumni I support the Bruins, of course. But I rarely watch sports on TV anymore except for football (soccer).

In football (Soccer in the US and Australia) Arsenal are a team I despise as I am a Tottenham fan and it's a tradition, always found them arrogant and full of themselves and in Aussie Rules Carlton are the team to hate being a Collingwood fan, though I don't hate them in the same way I hate Arsenal as that's been lifelong and has had time to manifest:D

You might be hard pressed if you did this in some towns in the US. Not all, but some. :D

Are you a Uper? When I was in college at BG, we used to go to Detroit fairly frequently - mostly to watch the Wings. Then through the tunnel to Windsor to buy Coffee Crisps and go home.

I have a tendancy to dislike teams based on thier fans. I still to this date have met very few cool Steelers fans and mostly jerks. Always root against them and thier rapist QB.

This is pretty much how I feel. It isn't so much the teams, well for a few it is. But more about their fans. So far, the worst that I have come in contact with are, Steelers, Patriots, and Raiders. If we are talking Hockey, Kings fans. Oh lord and I live in the heart of King country lol.

Oh, yes. Amen to that.

In an era where elite sportsmen tend to be ever further removed from any attachment to, link to, or loyalty for, the communities that may once have given rise to their predecessors, - and which still support their team - and where their attitudes of bottomless entitlement can coexist along with stratospheric salaries and mindless adulation, yes, my ardent support will be added to whatever team plays against a team for whom players who rape are not considered an issue meriting some soil-searching, a bit of deep contemplation and possible robust sanction, not least of stratospheric salaries.
