I chose to buy the sport model. I could've easily bought the SS model, but I liked the look of the sport, and also figured I may end up upgrading next year.

I'm completely happy with my purchase, but if anyone is trying to justify buying the sport by saying that sapphire is more reflective, just remember this. If the iPhone is anything to go by......the sapphire may be more reflective...but the sport is going to look worse in direct sunlight, as the sun is going to show up all those tiny hairline scratches.

I'm with you on this. I could've bought the SS, but A) I do like the look of the aluminum and, already owning a stainless steel watch, the SS does pick up scratches quite easily and B) This my first foray into an Apple gen 1 product. While I knew I wanted it, I also know that a newer, better version will likely be out next year and I know I will want that one too. I'll have an easier time buying one next year (likely the SS model) knowing I bought the less expensive model the first time around.

Also, I take quite good care of my products. My iPhone does not have a scratch or a dent on it. Now, I know this being a watch means it's more exposed, but I'm used to wearing a watch and am quite careful not to bang it against anything. I know accidents can and will happen, so having AppleCare+ makes me feel a bit better as well.

This makes sense. The SS is being targeted as more of a fashion device. As someone looking for pure utility, the Sport was a no-brainer for me and a bit more outdoor usability vs. risking a couple more scratches goes right along with that.

That said, I don't think SS users are going to have a drastically worse experience in sunlight and I don't think Sport users are going to be scratching their screens to oblivion. Everyone is trying to find some edge on their device vs. the ones others bought when they should just be enjoying the one they have.

I was wondering about that. I got the Sport, it is very bright, I have it on the dimmest setting. Some people have been complaining that the screen isn't bright and I was wondering if they had a defective watch (could be). But yeah the sport is very bright.

And the reason I went for the sport was I do like the matte look but the primary reason was the weight. I wanted the lightest watch possible.

You are Right!

Found this as well:
Oops, sorry.

A few scratches on the screen will not bother me, in fact so far I don't really look long enough for any scratches or marks to be noticed, this is just a quick look device for me.

I really don't need a flawless beautiful screen, I need a screen to be clear and readable in all conditions that's all.

The phone/iPad is different, I can stare at it for a while.

The sport is pretty hard to scratch, I have done a few things and thought oh no:eek: looked and it's fine:)

Saying it has "the best display" when it's just a case of one display having more glare in bright light vs the other display having more scratches...

I got the SS model on day 1 and I must say that in direct sunlight it is a lot harder to see the display..... that said, I can deal with this (we don't get much sun in the North East of England) and would rather have a stronger glass....maybe a really thin non-reflective screen protector???

I love how everyone is justifying their purchases.

"I'll take my crappy display because your screen will be unreadable from all the scratches."

"Enjoy your scratched up screens, I don't care if my sapphire is harder to see in sunlight."

Amazing how people take the article out of context. It says it looks better under "very bright conditions". It doesn't say "all around it looks better". People see and hear what they want.

The blogosphere loves having a new product to write about. Especially when it comes from Apple. They'll get a lot of articles out of examining every last detail of the watch. All of which will extend the products honeymoon period. Apples quite thrilled. :)

Well, it won't be possible to judge with just one watch.

I think we need to get people to do some tests, and take photo's perhaps also, in different lighting conditions, of both a Sports Watch and a Stainless Watch side by side for comparison testing.

Be good to know for those who have not yet placed their orders and are as yet undecided. Especially if they are people who are out and about all day long as opposed to say in the office, also runners too in sunlight.

The point is that it doesn't seem to be a problem for people with the SS watches, myself included.

It is the article that came up with the headline, and this thread title copied it. So it's not taking anything out of context to comment on one not being "the best" over the other.

lol I keep trying to remind myself that a lot of folks were not watch wearers before the apple watch. this Ion-X gorilla style glass has no business being on a watch. Especially a watch with such a exposed crystal. It will scratch and it will scratch not long into ownership if worn daily. I really wish Apple would have just put sapphire on all the models.

Classsss warfare......

I bought a sport. Could have afforded a SS, gen 1 and wanted to check it out like others. I'm amazed at the mine is better than yours going on here. You know the Edition owners have their servants check this to laugh at all of us right?

That said I'm happy with my Sport. We will all have a better idea in six months how everything shakes out.

A) $200 extra is no object (piss it away in a few pub nights anyways)
B) All my sapphire watches have 0 scratches after years of wearing
C) All my non-sapphire watches (include the ones with "mineral crystal") are all scratched up mysteriously
D) Coating on the Sport will display "hairline scratches" even if the Ion-X class is not scratched - ESPECIALLY VISIBLE UNDER BRIGHT LIGHT AT AN ANGLE

Solution: stick to Sapphire glass.

:D:cool::)

I received a Rolex submariner for graduation from my mother. We don't come from a family with many heirlooms and I wanted to change that. Anyway, I got it in 2006 and I don't have one single scratch on it. A few minor dings on the stainless steel case (Rolex says they can be buffed out whenever I get it serviced, which is expensive all by itself)

My point is, maybe the apple watch sport edition looks better side by side with a apple watch with sapphire crystal. But to me it's like going to best buy and looking at brand new tvs. Unless you are literally looking at the models side by side, you would never notice once you only brought one tv home. If I was going to buy an apple watch, I would without a doubt get one with the sapphire crystal. Just my two cents!
