Now if only they would give us an actual native app instead of this electron garbage. I think catalyst would be a great option for them!
Yeah... It's a facade to conclude they natively support M1 Macs...

(Ignore my post... I re-installed it and now it shows up as an Apple process... not sure what I did wrong the first time around).

No need. It’s great unless you listen to audio books. I fail to understand what is so bad about it.

For me the playlist/album track listings are the worst aspect of the new UI. By using two lines of text for each track they've somehow managed to make it both more cluttered looking AND less space-efficient. You have to scroll so much more and it makes managing large playlists really difficult.

Also, the app got a lot slower after the UI update. Things like resizing the Spotify window got more janky, start up time got longer, and CPU usage went up a lot, even while it is playing in the background. Hopefully the M1 native version will at least solve these issues!

I'll give the M1 update a try, but will probably be happy sticking with my February 2021 Spotify version with "classic UI" for a while yet.

Wait, it’s an Electron app, and they’re just now releasing a beta of an M1 native version of Spotify?! Electron has had release ready M1 native support for months now, so they have no excuse (other than Spotify’s traditionally poor support for new iOS/Mac features).

Curious - while using an M1 Mac, how can you tell if it isnt using native support and is still using Rosetta 2?

Looking to get an M1 Mac this year and curious on the experience.

Thank you

I don’t have an M1 Mac, but I’d imagine that System Profiler might tell you which apps you have installed are Intel applications. The Get Info window in the Finder probably would, as well, and maybe Activity Monitor might tell you if a process is an x86 process, even though Rosetta 2 is a thing.

Activity Monitor will show you whether each process is an Apple Silicon ("Apple") or Intel app:

You can also force Universal apps to run under Rosetta by checking an option in "Get Info".

Going to assume that's a *very* small percentage of users...
It most likely is, but if it’s at least 1% of Spotify Premium users who listen to locally uploaded songs, that is still at least one million users.

Its my understanding that you also cannot sort songs within a playlist on the web player, which is another feature I assume that is commonly used when on a Mac. Point is, the web app lacks features that the full version has, which can be important to people.

I love Apple and I'm all in with the ecosystem of iPhone, iPad, Watch, Mac, AirPods, HomePod, Apple TV 4K, etc. I love Apple. I pay for iCloud storage. I have nothing against Apple's services. Well there is one exception to this I suppose...

I personally do not like Apple Music. I do use Spotify Premium. I've always liked the black and green UI but I'm a "dark mode all the things" person. Back before AM got a decent dark mode, it was painful. Light mode is painful on my eyes. I started using dark mode because of the look, and now it's skewed my eyes to almost being photophobic with bright white UI's and websites. Perhaps in hindsight I shouldn't have started using dark mode because now it hurts *not* to.

I still find AM's UI to not be as nice to use on both iOS/iPadOS and macOS as Spotify's is on iOS/iPadOS and macOS. Your miles may vary. My only problem with Spotify has been using it under Rosetta 2 on my M1 MacBook Pro. The beta fixes this issue and it's pleasant to use again. Visually speaking I cannot imagine a better UI for a streaming music app.

White knighting on behalf of rock and pop stars?
Going to bat on behalf of the suits who fail to pay musicians?

The "stars" are getting paid pretty well -- it's the other 99.9% of artists that are getting effed by pitifully low streaming royalties.

They are welcome to find work elsewhere.

I have zero pity.

Correct, no sorting and no 'search in playlist' from what I can see. Anyway does the job fine for me, all about tradeoffs. And yes, I'm a premium user.

I need Windows on M1 , will be possible?
Well depends if you mean bear metal or in a vm

well no one compells tjhis 99.9% to be on spotify if they don't get payed enugh, there are competitors aren't there?

Does anybody else remember the good old days when MP3 playing software had simple to use interfaces, great play list control, and all of them came with a music visualiser? Why are all interfaces for music apps horrible these days?

Because their purpose now is not to play the music you have, but to gather your music listening habits to power their “algorithm.”

iTunes is still okay though. And there’s always other apps like foobar2000 for old schoolers.

I’m guessing they have more lawyers now than software engineers… :D
