I'm pretty sure Spotify has some kind of nasty deal with Amazon and/or Google which prohibits them from integrating to the Homepods.
I think Apple not allowing them to advertise their prices directly in the Spotify app without paying Apple its fees is their main argument for not optimizing the iOS and iPadOS apps.

If its more profitable for Spotify when you use their apps outside of Apple's ecosystem or on desktop computers then obviously they're not going to make the iOS/iPadOS experience on par with those.

Reasonable. But only if Apple makes Air Play an open standard. Until then, it remains a niche protocol that is not very well-supported on third-party hardware like TVs and smart speakers.
It’s not niche I have airplay on every tv and 3rd party speaker I’ve bought for years. Even my Samsung computer monitor offers airplay. In fact I won’t buy a device that doesn’t offer airplay. I don’t get why you think it’s not widely adopted by almost everything but the lowest end device.

Don’t use your dominant market position in one market to disadvantage others competing against you in another market.

It’s not complicated, Apple.
They literally offer an API that does what Spotify is asking, and many users of Spotify clearly want them to implement it. This is not on Apple.

But I’m sure the EU will come in and say the spirit of the DMA is that Apple can’t depreciate APIs in iOS even if they’ve created a better solution they’d prefer everyone use.

Many devices claim to support AirPlay. But every time I try to use it, it does not work properly.

Besides, if you only buy gear with the AirPlay logo, I guess one could come to the conclusion that it's ubiquitous.

Whenever people have airplay problems it’s almost always a network issue. I don’t find my 3rd party gear works any better or worse with airplay then Apple stuff. In fact some apps and website video work better over airplay on 3rd party devices then on apples. There are certain sites that will just airplay the audio but not the video on Apple TV but if I airplay directly to my tv it works.

Music playback is the one thing where Apple really should be killing it, given their history and company culture, yet they somehow manage to trip over their own feet time and time again. I hate Spotify, but in this case I don’t blame them for not implementing Apple’s “API” (aren’t we talking about Airplay 2 here?). Spotify Connect does so much more.

My kitchen speaker can save a Spotify playlist to play with one button push, without taking out my phone. Can I do that with the Apple API?

I don't know the reason why it's not working properly. Just recently I wanted to stream a movie to a very recent TV at a friends house. It froze constantly. I was lucky that I had a USB-C to HDMI cable with me.

Airplay should be boycotted if for no other reason than Apple tried to hide that Airplay2 has lower sound quality than Airplay 1.

How did your friend setup airplay on their tv. There are several choices of allowance. I usually have it set so someone has to be on the same WiFi network and it asks for a pin the first time a new device try’s to connect. Your friend probably didn’t have it setup properly

Whenever people have airplay problems it’s almost always a network issue.

Very often, WiFi access points have various options that can break airplay, including IGMP, multicast, broadcast, isolation and more.

One frequent case, I find, is that a guest in a house is connected to the guest wifi with network separation enabled for security.

Apple actually offers an API for third-party music services to stream directly to HomePods, but for whatever reason Spotify has chosen not to implement it

Spotify spent years of complaining of not having access to the HomePods. But years after Apple gave access, they still haven't implemented it, the same goes for the AppleWatch. They don't want to give users better service than the lowest denominator for all the other ecosystems!

It started playing, but after a couple of minutes froze again and again. If there was a problem with configuration, why did my Mac not spit out some kind of error message? I just can say that it was a very frustrating experience.

Yay we made $181 million because we write down our tax contributions until later in the year.

Conveniently sweeping the $500 million loss in 2023 under the carpet.

The investors want money back. And they’re going to get it.
Did you see how much the ceo makes. No wonder they are losing money

Spotify decided not to implement the API that would have enabled this functionality. That is certainly their right.

I fail to see how this is Apple’s fault or problem.
Spotify has their own API (Spotify Connect) that works with a variety of products, and delivers other/different features than Apples. When a speaker manufacturer supports Spotify Connect, it is certified by Spotify, with no involvement from Apple. I can see why neither company wants to hand that control over to the other, for many reasons.

The fact is, it worked before, Apple made a change, and now it doesn’t work. Yes, this is Apple’s fault. They are trying to bully Spotify into using an Apple API, instead of the API that they have invested years and millions (billions?) of dollars in. It is not about Spotify not enabling a new feature that Apple provides. It is Apple removing a feature that worked before.

Mad to me that some posters think it’s reasonable for device functionality such as this to be locked to Apple only devices and apps. I wanna be able to use my iPhone however I like with whatever apps and devices I choose.

I’ve bought into the Apple ecosystem for the past 15 years as I like the tight integration between software and device, and particularly how that carries across multiple products. I also like to be able to use third party apps if I choose to, and I expect these to have access to the full functionality of the devices I’ve paid for. There is absolutely no justification for Apple blocking device capabilities from third party apps whilst retaining them within thier own.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Apple should be focused on making the best software for their hardware, they certainly have the resources to do that and can attract top talent. Instead they seek to hobble the competition. Pure monopolistic behaviour.

After all these years I’m starting to see the appeal of Android, never thought I’d say that.
