AirPlay and Spotify Connect are 2 very different things.
With AirPlay, your devices plays the audio, but instead of using the speakers in the device, audio is transmitted over wifi to the device that should play the audio.
Spotify Connect though is a "remote controlled Spotify Device". You start the audio on your device, but it is the device that outputs the audio that connects to Spotify's servers and actually do all the work. This is why you can actually turn your device off, and the Spotify Connect device will continue playing your playlist. Try that with AirPlay.

SC was released in 2013, at which time I'm not sure Apple actually allowed third party apps to use AirPlay.
Yes, AirPlay was allowed then and Spotify implemented it until few years ago.

You are looking at the relationship between Spotify and Apple. I am looking at the relationship between Spotify and third party Audio devices (and yes, that is what I do for a living, so your attempt to pull rank didn’t work). Spotify has an API that I, as a speaker manufacturer, can choose to implement, relatively easily and cheaply, using cheap hardware. Then all Spotify users can access my speaker, from iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows or whichever platform Spotify supports. My business is with Spotify.

If Spotify wants to use Apple’s platform instead, I now must spend extra money on hardware (because Apple’s API requires more), and extra money on certifications and licenses.

I can go on, but suffice to say, you have no clue what is going on on the playback hardware side of this.
Spotify used to support AirPlay some years ago and they can do that along with supporting devices that connect directly with Spotify API's. Your welcome to do business with Spotify only and save money, I am not trying to pull any "rank" on you. My complaints is that Spotify can do both, but chooses not to do so, as it has got manufacturers to implement their proprietary solution. If it's only about cost, why don't you make another version of speakers supporting AirPlay and sell them at a higher price?

There are a lot of iPhone users that own multiple Apple devices. I have 6 HomePods in my house and 3 Sonos devices. Spotify refusal to support airplay 2 means I can never even consider seriously using their service.

I'm running iOS 18 Beta 7 and the volume button is working for me. My setup is about 16 Echo devices that I play Everywhere.

As opposed to a 30 year old stereo that can’t be fixed when it breaks?

A 30 year-old stereo can't be fixed? What world are you in?

I restored a 40 year old stereo about a year ago; all the parts are readily available, from pretty much any component supplier. Older non-IC electronics are EASY to find parts for.

Apple is pushing people away from the Homepod by making it suck for anything other than Apple users. I'm in a mixed iOS/Android, macOS/Windows household, and Spotify works across platforms. Apple won't bother even enabling regular Bluetooth capability on the Homepods, even though they have Bluetooth hardware onboard.

They can't be bothered to investigate crap that is made up on the spot by random internet users.
Why get a HomePod if you don’t want to use it with an Apple Device. It’s the actual point of it 🙄. I don’t buy a PC to use Final Cut Pro or Garageband.

With Apple devices and with other devices... and I don't own one, and probably never will, because they suck. I don't own any smart speakers.

My bluetooth speakers work with any device made in the last 20 years. Why can't a Homepod at least have a bluetooth option? The hardware is already onboard, Apple just won't enable it.

Dumb dumb dumb.

I threw out / sent to recycling a vintage Panasonic sx 1280 because I couldn’t get it fixed. I loved that thing.

Maybe today in 2024 it’s easy to get parts for vintage stories but when I tried I couldn’t. YMMV.

Can you really control a homepod with your phone volume buttons or is this just a spotify thing?

Well it might be, but there are other options for replacing difficult to find parts now, like fully integrated amp board to just swap in if need be. The problem with 70s and prior equipment is finding germanium transistors, since they aren't made anymore.

All that said, I probably have better parts sources. My ex's father owns a audiophile audio store/installer outside of Boston and he connected me to some suppliers that he uses.

I agree. It would be a good thing if Spotify left the platform. Nobody cares.

Apple should keep chipping away making their app experience a little less useful. Its driving more and more people to adopt the best experience - Apple Music.

The EU does.

So much Stanning for the monopolist

Guys .. Apple is not the white knight here.
Why is everything either Good or Bad to some people? I hate that stupid mentality.

There are 1,000's of devices that are made to be proprietary to an eco system. Samsung Watch, many home automation devices (Philips Hue for example). Same goes for many software systems. Many security systems, and many more examples come to mind that can’t work with others.

Life is unfair. It doesn’t make it dumb dumb dumb, it makes it proprietary.

Why are you even complaining about Smart Speaker capability or restrictions when you have no intention of even having one? How do you know what sucks if you never even try something? People who have strong opinions and no knowledge to give it.

Proprietary = dumb.

The proprietary smarthome thing is one of the reasons I completely bailed on smarthome tech, across the board. That and reliability is in the gutter.

Apple has issues with audio controls on its own kit (Apple TV etc) let alone 3rd party apps.

I’ve been receiving the message for at least a month now, and prefer the in app volume control because it’s more precise than using the physical buttons of the iPhone. Spotify is so much better than Apple Music.
