Can someone please explain the appeal of Spotify? Every time I read about them I cringe. Now they want to charge extra to get the same audio quality we had in the '80s? Why? Because other services do the same thing? Streaming audio is all they do - of course they should be better quality than everyone else. For what they charge they should be offering Atmos or High-Resolution audio formats standard.
Three things:
1) recommendations are more in line with my tastes than Apple Music (purely subjective)
2) I prefer the UI of Spotify (again purely subjective)
3) I have collaborative playlists with my girlfriend (where we both can add music to a shared playlist) - Apple Music (as far as I’m aware) still don’t support this and this is a big drawback

Back when I had the choice, it was pretty much between spotify or pandora. I chose spotify because a few reasons.
1. I could search for songs/artists and play them, pandora was just a giant playlist in my experience
2. The ability to download and listen to songs offline.
3. The ability to turn up the audio quality going from free to paid membership
What do you mean by had the choice? Do you no longer have a choice of music streaming? I have Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music as a side effect of having other services.

Isn't the first one simply a product of having used the service?

Does Spotify not have that weird chimera UI (lists in grids with grids in lists buried in menus) like the other ones have?

And what is a shared playlist? Does the app know she heard a song you played or does it simply update the playlist when either of you listens to it?

I've always contemplated switching to Spotify, but my 10,000 song library of uploaded tracks mixed in with streaming tracks would be impossible to transfer. But this feature is so sweet it might make me consider starting clean just to switch over. I really hope apple copies them so I don't have to

Not sure why Apple hasn’t done this. They have ALAC already. Make it Apple Music+, include in higher end One bundles. It’s kind of obvious.
Maybe the conversation hasn’t been as active on MacRumors, but people have been speculating about Spotify doing this for years now. It’s gotten to the point where folks had stopped holding out hope it would happen at all. As for Apple, I know that there’s some doubt that they’ve got something up their sleeve since they’ve never added ALAC purchase options on iTunes, even though people have been asking for it since before music subscriptions became popular. I always assumed Spotify adding it would sort of force them to come up with something. Let’s see if that’s true.

This is a fair point, but suppose that the speculation about the iPhone’s port being removed ends up being true. The iPhone is the biggest platform for Apple Music, and it wouldn’t be able to work with wired headphones anymore.
Care to elaborate on why it wouldn't work? I use my ATH-M50X with my 12 mini all the time. Still sounds great.

I pay $8.33 for Apple Music, which meets my (and no doubt many others') needs.

If someone wants to pay almost 2X for better quality, that's OK with me.

Sure, I mean that’s the same with any streaming service - but I know from the start Spotify consistently gave me better recommendations and continues to do so. That keeps me using Spotify as I like to listen to a lot of songs outside of what I know I like.

So we each have our own Spotify accounts (no family sharing etc) so if either me or my partner really like a song we can add it into a playlist that we share.

It’s kind of a soundtrack to our year (as sappy as that sounds).

I listen to classical and techno. She listens to rock and metal. lol, I think a shared playlist would be the fastest way to divide up our stuff. But cool the two of you enjoy it.

Hopefully this will make record companies upload better quality/masters/mixes. I think Spotify has 320 kbit vorbis, that should be more than enough for most music. Still many songs sound like crap. Spotify should demand HQ mixes from record companies.

Watching that Spotify event brings back memories ... of Apple's own events! It's like Spotify is trying to be as cool as Apple in creating those "live event" streams, to the point of the same camera effects and sound tracks. 🤣

The iPod craze decades ago pulled a fast one on a whole generation of young listeners -128kbs MP3s. It's safe to say that a significant portion of the human population now has no idea what Hi Fidelity is / cuz they've never heard it
Listening to low-quality MP3s makes me nostalgic. 😔

I don't understand modern people. I listen to what I want and I don't need any algorithms.
What about going to a record store and talking to people about what they’ve been listening to? Or asking librarians for recommendations and browsing around at Blockbuster? Algorithms are obviously not the same, in both quality of the experience and recommendations, but they still help point you in a good direction.
