It is indeed a fact that Aptx Lossless can deliver bit-perfect 16-bit/44.1kHz but only in lab conditions. In real world scenarios where there is other RF about, such as from other Bluetooth users, WiFi, and Bluetooth peripherals, Aptx lossless has time and again been shown to revert to a reduced bit rate to prevent dropouts.
We’re close. But we are not there yet. And that’s just CD quality, which most people consider “standard” quality. Hi-res? No chance.
It’s not splitting hairs at all. I’m sure Bluetooth could manage 8-bit/44.1 kHz lossless but it would sound like crap. Lossless is only part of the requirement. It needs to be lossless at a good bit rate, at least 16-bit/44.1kHz, and it needs to be maintainable and consistent in the real world.
