Imagine if Spotify was allowed to provide a direct link in the iOS app to pay for a Spotify subscription, Apple might really be feeling the competition...I just do not understand how Microsoft can violate anti-trust for packaging internet explorer as the default (even though other browsers could be downloaded) when the Mac technically existed as an alternative, but some people think Apple is not violating anti-trust by packaging the iOS App Store as the default (even though you cannot download other app stores) when Android exists as an alternative

I think the differentiating factor is that Apple makes their hardware while Microsoft does not. Windows is technically a third party OS on non proprietary hardware. I feel if Apple was in the same legal water the lawsuit would of happened by now.

Yeah just like Apple isn’t interested in raising iPhone and Mac prices, they just want to sell enough devices to be relevant in the computer and phone market /s

Only a person with no understanding of how a public business runs would make your claim.
Facts.

Integration, for me is Apple Music's biggest strength. I have 22K songs since my first iPod and having them in the cloud, on demand, is a great convenience.
But Spotify blows it away with Daily Mixes. If I want a playlist to throw some random songs that I love at me, Spotify does it in spades.
I personally don't care about how much artists get paid and never understood this argument.

Tom Brady probably makes less and generates more revenue than a backup center in the NBA, I'm still going to watch the NFL. If you don't like what you are getting paid, leave the biz or don't sign the contract.

The accusation against Microsoft was that they were using Internet Explorer to maintain their monopoly. Apple doesn't have a monopoly so how could they be "violating anti-trust"? Maybe I'm not following your point here?

I use Apple Music for the integration and they pay the artists more that Spotify.
Both Apple Music and Spotify pay artists the same amount. Streaming rights cost is, oddly, set by law and all companies must pay the same amount.

In case anyone is curious what the various services pay per stream (updated for 2019)

Not according to the chart I posted above. Unless, of course, you are in a different country?

Still waiting for HD Spotify and better Siri integration...

I find Spotify repeats songs way too often when I used it. I switched to Pandora and greatly prefer it...
Pandora’s “Music Genome” playlist creation algorithm is still unmatched in putting together excellent playlists. I wish they’d license it to AM and Spotify...

Not surprised. Spotify has an uncanny ability to push music that you might actually want to listen to more often than not. Other services, like Apple Music you either get stuck listening to popular music or end up hunting fruitlessly for new music.

Exactly this.

I subscribe to both.

Spotify is my fantastic music discovery tool.
Apple Music is my fantastic music library tool.

The former helps me find all the new music I could imagine in a way only Apple Music could dream.
The latter lets me organise a beautiful music library including all my old CD's and singles and rarities that aren't on steaming platforms, all synced together with no difference to those that are, across all my devices.

I'm thinking of trying Spotify for this reason alone. I have a hard time discovering new music with Apple.

Define "better"? Spotify now works with Siri. You just have to add "with Spotify" at the end of your requests. Works pretty well, actually

Would Apple like the entire pie? No doubt.

But Apple's focus is almost always on high margins, not volume. They don't make a $200 phone; they don't make a $300 laptop; etc. Perhaps just a piece of the streaming music pie fits that model for now.

Nothing wrong with competition as it will continue to push Apple. My only concern with Spotify is how long they will last, considering they don't make any money and are trying to renegotiate a deal currently to pay artists even less. Feels like it is just a matter of time.

1. Spotify makes money now. It's in the article OP linked. It's the most important aspect of Spotify's earnings announcement.

2. Spotify is not trying to renegotiate any streaming pay deals to pay artists less than Apple. That is false. Streaming royalties are set by law, and Apple, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon, etc. all pay the same rates no matter what.

Crazy to think they're suing apple for anti-competitive behaviour while growing twice as fast and turning a profit.
Daniel Ek is an entitled whiner.

Although we typically only hear about him on MR when he complains about Apple, the fact is he whines about everything. He’s constantly after the Swedish government saying they should do more to help his company with things like rent/housing, education (schools should teach programming earlier so he can hire staff from Sweden) or financial regulations so it’s easier to pay stock options to employees.

And then uses the ever-present threat of “pulling his company out of Sweden” if things don’t change.

No... Apple prices their products to achieve their required margins. Which is now less than 38% for GPM.

If you’re going to pull a chart from an article you should also add context. Spotify said:

However, Spotify anticipates returning to a loss for Q4 2019, estimating that its operating loss will fall somewhere between €31 million and €131 million ($34 million – $145 million).

So, Spotify isn’t profitable. A rare quarter where they do post a profit doesn’t qualify. They need to make money every quarter, not because they got lucky with market conditions or did some “creative accounting” over a tax situation (like the last time they posted a profit). They need a business model that’s profitable. And they don’t have that now.

Which means they’re going to have to change. I see only three options - increase prices, reduce services or dump their ad supported tier (or a mix of all three).

as long as spotify refuses to implement 2FA I won't use their services
Are you afraid someone might steal your playlists?

Incorrect. As long as they grow the number of subscribers (and fast) they are not necessarily expected to make a profit.

I really wish AM would copy Spotify’s remote play mode and pick-up between different devices.

there’s other stufff that Spotify does that I don’t think AM matched, like the simplicity of downloading albums for offline and viewing offline only playlists/albums
