One wonders if pivoting into podcasts means that less time is spent listening to music, meaning less is paid out as royalties (since podcasts represent a 1-time fixed cost).

Would be ironic, but hey, if that is working out in Spotify’s favour by allowing them to finally be profitable (and stay profitable), I won’t knock them for that.

Spotify is bad for artists. Spotify literally pays artists HALF of what Apple Music pays artists every time a song is streamed. HALF. And you thought Apple was greedy. Spotify is twice as greedy, and in some countries, like Norway for example, Spotify even charges more per month than Apple Music (AM 99 NOK, Spotify 109 NOK).

If you want to support the creators of your music you should consider switching from Spotify to Apple Music.
The creators have minds of their own and can pull out of Spotify if they don't like the deal. They most likely won't because they make more overall from Spotify's bigger market share.

I'll continue to use whichever service suits me the best.

Right now I have Google Play Music (signed up when it was $8 a month with YouTube Premium) and Amazon Music HD. Amazon’s lossless is great and noticeable in the car (although you need a strong data connection.)

I‘ve tried Tidal, Spotify and Apple Music but meh.

Making Spotify twice as greedy does not justify Apples position by them just being greedy.

No, simply listening to your favourite artists on Spotify or Apple does not make them more money, that is not how the model works. But if its a popular artist then it is still more likely Spotify will pay them more than Apple in all but the most popular tracks due to the pro-rata model used.

The entire music industry is wrecked. That's true!
I have several friends that has music on Spotify and Apple Music. They pay per play is about twice as much on Apple Music.
