i would give up Spotify if Apple bothered their ass to make a proper modern Apple Music app for Windows. iTunes/Web player doesn't count.

Neither Google or Apple will be making any more software for Windows ever again. That would be legitimizing its existence.

Obviously Chrome but only because that’s their own platform. Also of course iCloud and Google Drive to get your data into their platform to make it easier to switch.

But software that makes that platform better? No, it’s been policy now for a very long time.

iTunes of course predates all that, but I’m pretty sure Microsoft wrote them a check to get them to package up the existing iTunes for the MS Store. They didn’t change or improve it in any way but Microsoft wanted any sense of legitimacy for the Store that they could get.

In fact the Store version is actually worse due to the limitations of Store apps and the poor quality of UWP in general. Last I checked you can still download the “legacy” version for “Windows 7”. Like I said, it’s the exact same program but works better.

I didn’t mean for this to turn into a rant about the Store but the sad fact is that’s the state of Windows software. That’s how Microsoft wants it done and I’m sad to say we’re never going to see any good native Windows software ever again.

You are in the A/B testing group

I currently don't have those buttons on iOS and have never seem them. (Premium user)
So what does it look like for you then? I’ve been using Spotify for many, many years and don’t know better than the separate buttons.

Wait, what?

They are making a song & dance (no pun intended) about adding basic functionality?!
nicely done!
notice that it was one button and I use Spotify daily lol
LMAO ...man you've been stuck into the Bill & Ted's non-excellent adventure of streaming shuffeling.
I guess the idea came from old stereos where one bottom toggled between shuffle, play in order and repeat song.
Um ... what old stereos are you talkin bout?

You mean OLD generation CD players or Mini-Disc home stereo component players that COULD do Shuffle?

You could not do Shuffle on Cassette, LP, 8-Track and definitely not on AM/FM Stereo ... so what 'old stereos' are you actually talking about?

You had:
Play/Pause, Stop, FWD (Fast Forward), RWD (Rewind), and on earlier CD Plyaers of '97-2000 you got Next Track or Previous Track and finally shuffle - but ONLY on CD Players. I'd like to see such old players you're thinking about with button selection other than what I've mentioned. Then again 'OLD' is relevant here for us both meaning different timelines/era's.

I always just tap on the first song title on the track list. I don’t think I have actually hit that button even once.

however, what annoys me more is that they moved the Spotify connect button to play your music on another device AGAIN. It used to be in the bottom right, now it’s suddenly in the top corner

No, the functionality is the same. They're just making it more obvious that you can play without shuffling by separating the buttons.

I pulled up the free web-based version I have (after changing my password because I don't stream & never use it) ... they're definitely very different buttons. Already. On Free. For everything I pulled up (their suggested play lists, new releases, older releases ...

But this is the Web version. Again, I don't stream, so I'm not downloading the app only to delete it.

What's not separated is Joe Rogan from the millions they're giving him, I assume.
And given that he’s number 1 nearly without exception in their podcast chart, a very wise decision not to separate him from his millions. Indeed a remarkably prudent investment.

Music discovery was the primary reason for my move to Spotify, and I've been loving it ever since.

This is a perfect example of why competition is good. If Apple ups their game in the music discovery algorithm area, I might give it another shot.

The same could be said for improving Siri - if they did, I'd give their speakers another shot. As it stands now, the Google assistant, and a few nest minis are far more effective than Siri and the Homepods I tried for a couple of weeks.

I am an absolute Apple fan, but I hold zero loyalty to any corporation. I go where the products and services suit me best.

Want me back? Do better.

How long were you using Apple Music for? I swapped for pricing reasons with Apple One. For several months it really sucked, but honestly after long enough the suggestions are very good. I'm also at the point in my life that I don't care for getting the newest music available just music I like. The personal curated "radio station" apple has plus the ability to "create a station" with any particular song you like is sooooooooo perfect for me.

That being said, I don't understand when people say one service is better than the other. I think each has its strengths and weaknesses. I recently tried to use spotify again and I personally found the mobile app to be laggy and a mess. BUT Spotify computer app is leaps and bounds better than apples.

Recap: I think apple musics algorithm is good if you give it enough time to learn your listening habits. But spotify does a better job at finding the latest/newest music. Apple helps me find any music that I might like regardless of when it was released and I think thats cool.

I used Apple Music for at least a year… not nearly as good as Spotify, for me.

Glad you enjoy it though! If Spotify gives me reason, I’ll give Apple Music another shot someday.

Nah, you can download the W10 version directly from apple:

But I did not even realize that iTunes was even in the MS store. I still have to dink around in Windows occasionally, mostly for kids games and stuff, and it blows my mind how terrible and half-assed it has become over the last 3 or 4 years.... not that it was amazing before that or anything.

Ah they changed the wording a bit. But yeah this schizophrenic split between store and “legacy” is one of many many problems.

Basically “legacy” seems to mean “the stuff that works great but we don’t want you to use anymore because it isn’t making us money.”

Things like a taskbar that has the icons you want instead of being filled with Bing ads, or development platforms that let you publish software yourself and use the full features of the OS instead of requiring permissions and limitations to be distributed by Microsoft.

I think the explanation for how bad Windows has gotten is that they have seen everything that Google and Apple have done in the past ten years or so and are just trying to copy it without understanding why it works for them (Microsoft Account requirement for everything being one prominent example.)

And also driving Bing ad revenue.

Now you'll be in control across playlists, albums and artist feeds. Arguably, the way it always should have been.

It’s the way it always has been (for Premium subscribers). It’s just now they’ve improved the UI to make it easier to turn shuffle mode off.
