If you don't have a Facebook account, why not just make a "fake" facebook account (never update etc...)

and use that as the default Spotify account etc...

Why would I pay $10 a month and not own any of million songs, instead of iTunes model of paying $10 a song, and own 10 songs per month for life, I would own my own millions of songs, and on hard-drive based iPods that dont require internet. I can play thaat song that I own for $.99 anywhere in the world, in subways, in caves, and in the boonies, if my road trips should ever take me there.

Actually, you are half-wrong Tunster. It does require Facebook to signup through the app. There is no signup option in the app itself, so the only other option is Facebook login.

You can make it on their website though, but it is currently down, so it is technically still true that you don't need Facebook.

Or just set up a facebook account with no personal information...

I like to own also

I also like to own music. But, I love Spotify for discovery. When I stumble across a song or album I like, I buy it. It's not one or the other when it comes to renting or owning. They both play well together. With Spotify, I can listen to an album as much as I want before making an impulse buy to purchase it based on sound snippets. I like that.

You get 10 songs you purchased for $10.

or

You get 15 million songs if you pay $10 a month.

Spotify has "off-line" mode for up to 3,333 songs. Which mean you can listen to any of the 3,333 songs you designated without any internet. Save a lot of mobile data.

Look at it this way....

Would there still be a need for buying digital movies on Itunes if paying $9.99 a month for a Netflix-like service that give you access to all the movies and TV shows in the world?

Which is a better choice?

Netflix-like service that has all the movies/tv shows in the world for $9.99 a month (with offline mode for playback without internet connection)

or

use Itunes to download movies and owning the movies

The spotify app allows caching for listening offline.

Others beat me too it but here it is: You can do that with SF Premium, which allows to download the tracks and play them from the SF app. Not in a way that you can export it anywhere and you have to go online every 30 days to prove that you are still a subscriber. But it works anywhere in the world (as does SF Premium if you have an internet connection), in subways, planes and in the boonies also. I think its limited to 3000 tracks or so though if that is limiting for you (lets say a CD has 10 tracks so thats 300 CDs...)

I love Spotify! I listen to such a wider range of music with it. The offline mode means I can listen to music when I'm on the underground.

:)

Apple should buy Spotify, that way they'll control all the music industry.

Spotify is not only renting service, you can buy songs/albums there as well :)

You guys also forget one of the other main uses for a service such as spotify.

DJ's use subscription based music to save thousands of dollars in music costs.

You can literally start up your own DJ'ing business with a hotspot feature on your phone, an iPad and some speakers & an amp. Total cost < $1500.

DJ's in the past used to have to buy CD's/ tapes and the cost to get into DJ'ing was over $5000 easily just in music costs.

Or you could spend $10 a month and have access to their entire library, find songs, note them, and THEN go buy the album if you like enough of them.

HOW DARE THESE PEOPLE ALLOW US TO HAVE MORE OPTIONS! Their model is dumb and they should feel bad, competition is awful, only iTunes should be allowed to exist!

Yeah, and when Apple introduces similar service, it is suddenly the best thing EVER!

Spotify for music is like a "dream-like" Netflix for movies/tv shows in which this imaginary Netflix

1) has all the movies/tv shows in the world
2) allowed for offline mode, so you don't need internet connection to view the movies/tv shows
3) cost $9.99 a month

Negative: You don't actually own the Movies/TV shows on Netflix.
Positive: You can watch any movie/tv shows you want anywhere and anytime you want for $9.99 a month, even without an internet connection.

Yeah, if Netflix had every movie ever made then no one would ever buy another movie again. They would just use netflix and save tons of money

And with the right scale, Hollywood would make A LOT MORE MONEY.

Let's assume 500 millions worldwide sign up at $9.99 a month.

That's 500 million x $9.99 x 12 months = $59.94 billion a year in revenue.

what's always annoyed me about spotify on the iPhone is it's missing the 'top tracks' from the desktop version and now iPad version.

I've mailed them a million times about this and gotten the standard 'thanks will pass it on'

I had Netflix and then trashed the streaming service after the first month. They are FAR from having every movie. Hell, if they had 25% of the movies out there on streaming I would be surprised. It was such a waste of money, because I could hardly find any of the movies I wanted to watch.

Extreme is 320Kbit audio.

Will gapless playback come to the iPhone app as well?
It seems that in general most iPhone apps with looping or continuous music don't support gapless playback.

Would be nice if it did. I couldn't really tell any difference with the iphone app but I didn't spend much time messing around with it.

As long as Spotify requires a Facebook account to work, they can go **** themselves. Not getting a FB for some lousy music rental service.

I really don't understand how this myth started. It's never been the case that you need a Facebook account yet I see this stated every time there's a post on Spotify.

This is one of the reasons I use it. Though it's now taking up way too much space on my phone. :p I do wish the mobile apps had a pandora like feature where you could create custom playlists based on an artist or song. For me that's usually the best way of finding new music I might like. You don't get that from iTunes or Amazon where their top lists are usually top 40/CHR crap.

Yep. Too bad each movie production company is too greedy wanting as much as possible.

I think the biggest difficulty at this point is how the money would be divied up. Would it go according to box office sales or view count or what.

Yeah 95% of their movies are independents that you have never heard of and could probably pick up for less than a dollar per dvd at places like walmart or best buy.
