That's a terrible analogy.

The crux of Spotlight is its ability to search within files. The crux of Safari is its ability to render web sites.

Searching within files is to Spotlight is NOT as Safari is to playing Flash content.

It's a perfect analogy that pokes an immediate hole in your argument, thus to you its terrible. It searches, maybe it doesn't search everything you want it to, but it does search. Again, Apple is likely working on adding the functionality of content searching however its not complete yet, thus apple indicates on their site those features aren't there.

Do you know what an analogy is?

Also, the issue isn't what I "want" search on the iPhone to be. Apparently your reading comprehension problems run deeper than simply not knowing how to draw analogies.

Hopefully Apple can figure out something to get this working on the iPhone down the road -- because real Spotlight would be pretty spiffy.

I'm gonna bow out of this thread now, since it's obvious where this is heading. Have a nice day :)

Do you know what an analogy is?

Analogy: a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification. What is your point? The comparison of Safari on the desktop to iPhone vs. Spotlight on the desktop and iPhone.

OK, my bad. I didn't read the "fine print", now it definitely does suck...

"Icons to the left of the search results let you know which application the results are from. Tap an item in the results list to open it.

Application—First, last, and company names

Mail—To, From, and Subject fields of all accounts (the text of messages isn’t searched)

Calendar—Event titles, invitees, and locations (notes aren’t searched)

iPod—Music (songs, artists, and albums) and the titles of podcasts, video, and audiobooks

Notes—Text of notes

Spotlight also searches the names of the native and installed applications on iPhone, so if you have a lot of applications you may want to use Spotlight as a way to locate and open applications."

Ya ... not great. Not awful, but not great.

I'd like to be able to type in '7425' and find all phone numbers that have that combination, for example.

Oh well, here's to waiting for 4.0 ;)

Just something i have ONLY just noticed.

When in a mailbox, if you drag down the 1st email at the top, the search bar comes up, and you can search subject etc....

How long has this been there for?!

So it's not perfect, but it sure is better than the NOTHING we had prior to 3.0! I'm enjoying the calendar search, and the mail search (especially searching on the server!) has come in handy for me multiple times.

Could it be better? Yep. Is it still useful? Sure.

After 4.0, you'll be waiting for 5.0.

BTW, lest you think I'm a freak that stands behind everything Apple does, I'm having some problems with Spotlight as it currently stands.

It doesn't seem to pull up recurring events (only the first original event?), and it certainly misses some calendar items (an item that was in March doesn't show when I search). There's something wrong with it on a basic level, that's for sure.

i guess i'm a little to spoilt, the search i used to have on my JB phone even searched for words within a SMS if i wanted it to

The workaround that I've been using since getting my iPhone last July has been to use Google Calendar. Searching on Google Calendar is fast and accurate and pulls up everything.
It takes longer and is a pain but it works. I do it right through Safari.

Windows is an operating system, so you're right, it doesn't care for people's feelings. Assuming you mean Microsoft, that is ignorant of you to say. People like you give people who enjoy Apple products a bad name. You would purchase anything that Apple puts out even if it is the same exact thing as a Microsoft product, but worse. Learn to make some decisions on your own for once and stop listening to the "kewl" I'm a Mac commercials. By the way, I use both Microsoft and Apple products because I think they both excel in different areas.

ROFLL!! that made me laugh so hard!

And the 'impossible to please' emerge from the woodwork once more.

yep, that's why my sig is what it is. ;)

It must be depressing to have this kind of "never satisfied" mindset. No, 3.0 isn't perfect. But it's a heck of a lot better than 2.0, which was a heck of a lot better than 1.0 So yeah, you can just keep complaining about what still isn't perfect, or you can enjoy that your phone does a whole lot more today than it did yesterday (at no cost!) and look forward to it getting even better in the future. I choose the latter.

i disagree, if apple dont do something right then as consumers we have a right to moan about it, we dont just agree with everything they do.

Considering windows based PDA's had universal search i think bashing windows is just a cheap apple get out clause when clearly apple have not done what they said they were going to do.

it is frustrating that you cant bring up numbers quickly but im sure ill live too!

lol, I think it's hilarious that apple bashes windows (just like many contributers to this forum) but Apple can't even get the basic things.....It's taken 3 years to get MMS, spotlight, cut/paste...really? Sorry but those are basic, basic things in my book.

Clearly you haven't used a Windows smartphone before. If you had, you wouldn't be bashing the iPhone.

EDIT: Nevermind I'm stupid, I thought this worked because it found some very specific emails for me...

I think this is by design because you can search the body of your email in the email app.

I think they decided against it in spotlight because;

1. Would probably be slower since it has to go through ALL inboxes and ALL email bodies.

2. You would have so many results for common words that it would become useless when searching for Apps or Music etc.

My two cents.
